Well you can also auction a site with zero traffic and zero sales for hundreds of dollars. They are generally "reseller service" sites and are very prevalent on Flippa.

I'm not sure its traffic numbers that make a site "premium." For example if you sold a high-value (over $100) product but only received 100 targeted visitors a month and just 5 of them bought the product you could make some serious cash. In my eyes that would be a very premium site!

You're going to fail. If you're afraid of failure then you do not belong in the Internet Marketing Business. Period.

Traffic doesn't necessarily make a site premium. It helps, but it's not the only thing and it would take a lot more than 40 or 50 to be significant traffic. Revenue is also a big selling point for sites on Flippa. Even sites that only make around $30/mnth in Adsense usually sell pretty well on Flippa.

Sites that come with a large Twitter following, Facebook friends or mailing list sell better than startups also.

Some people sell startups, but there usually isn't much money in it, especially with the high listing and success fees that Flippa has.

There are so many factors that go into domain value over and above traffic alone:
    • length of domain
    • domain extension (tld or other)
    • page rank
    • how well the site is built
    • what platform the site is built on
    • the theme of the site
    • etc.
These are just a few. Like BP said, it can be a real strong name by itself and still pull a lot of money. I just bought one for ten grand that didn't have an ounce of traffic or PR or even a site, but the name was real strong.

Like others have said traffic is only a fraction of the pie that makes a site a "Premium site"

Some other things maybe the income of the site, how many repeat visitors the site has as well as how long term is the monetization strategy.
