Pay for the answer, or research it yourself?

Would you rather spend a little money and get the answer you are looking for right away or save your money and spend the time researching the answer for yourself? What's more important to you, time or money?

    Time is more important to me. But - credibility trumps both. For that reason, I'd only pay to have research done if I trusted the researcher with my cred.

      I love doing research and doing it myself is the only way I'd feel sure I found the best answer. But I have toyed with the idea of paying someone to research topics for side projects and websites.

      Agree. I had some research done for me once, and what came back was totally inaccurate. If I'd used it, I would have completely ruined my credibility. I don't mind doing research with a coffee or a glass of merlot, interesting research is a good way to wind down at the end of the day.

        Yep,
        the same for me, your own research is often most accurate and you can spend more time just explaining what you want to find out to somebody. I would consider paying for some more complex research.

    Both time and money. But sometimes it depends on what information you are looking for. and sometimes when you buy information it may not be right for your needs. In this case searching and getting information for free is the best option.

    I don’t see it this way. For me this is not a matter of time or money. I believe I have to find the answer I need myself because I cannot completely trust anyone. I have paid for many answers, and many of them were totally wrong for my business. They may work on other niches, but they didn’t work for me.

    I still pay for having special information, but not as much as before. I believe you must be very carefully, and never depend on somebody else’s opinion. Most mentors are merely theoretical. They don’t examine your business, trying to find special answers for you. They teach you how to follow their method, without wasting their time with the research they should do. I asked for a refund from my first mentor online in 2007. She sent me a refund - half amount, around $200. Almost everything she taught me was totally inadequate for my business.

    She also taught me a few basic things that were correct and helped me. However, I could have learned them alone if I knew that wonderful places like the Warrior forum existed online. I was so, so ignorant, but so confident. I don’t know how I had the courage to build my business online without knowing anything about internet marketing, besides lies I learned from internet marketers who promised you that you only need to know ‘how to click your mouse’ in order to make a lot of money by following their steps.

    I saw from the beginning of my career that I cannot trust anyone. This mentor was only a first example… I had many other adventures online.

    This is why I prefer to find all the answers I need without depending on anyone, even when I pay for having certain answers. Sometimes I need faster answers. However, I have to think and make my own research, so that I may verify if these answers are really right, and if they are really good for my business.

    My field is mental health. It’s not internet marketing… Mental health is a very serious matter.

      Of course it depends on many factors and your current position in business.

      When I first started I thought time was my most abundant commodity and did everything myself even it took me days or weeks to learn the basic skills I needed to do the jobs.


      Some of that I,m glad I did, as those skills have done me well over time. Other things I should have gotten others to do and not wasted my time. Unfortunately it is not always easy to see that at the time, especially when you are fairly new.


      However one thing is for sure, if you want to earn a full time living on the internet you will almost certainly have to outsource some work. Not paying other to do some of your work is false economy and will actually hold you back.


      The real question for me though is not should you? But how to best find the people to do the work. It does seem to be a bit of jungle in this area and many must end up with views like clever7. However with a little common sense, due diligence and trial and error you will find people who will actually advance your career online simply by doing some of the things you do, only much, much better.

    Do your own research.

    Outsource boring repetitive tasks and work only on the important things.

    If you want quick half-assed answers for everything you have the wrong mentality to be sustainable in IM anyway

    This is another simple subject. The answer is of course - it depends........

    I always do my own research since getting that right makes a MASSIVE difference to the results of any project.

    I'll happily outsource graphics, content, promotion etc... but the research HAS to be done right, so if I think I need to do it myself - I will - ALWAYS.

    Great feedback folks! I enjoy doing research myself, but will look to others from time to time if I feel that I can truly learn from what they know and am confident that they will be able to deliver.

    On the flip side, saving money by doing your own research is definitely a plus Not to mention the fact that you know exactly what you are getting because you did it yourself.
