Hey Warriors,

Me again seeking advice!

Being a football (soccer) coach, I know the importance of teaching basics to beginners. If they don't learn the basics they can't learn the more advanced techniques.

I think a lot of the time beginners in IM (myself included) try to jump right in and want to know how to make a zillion dollars in a week.

Basically my question is, if you were teaching a newbie how to cut it in IM, what are the basics you'd teach them before moving on to the more money spinning advanced techniques?

What foundations must be drilled in to the core of their heads, so much that it becomes second nature, before they can move on to learning the advanced stuff?

Also what order would you teach them in, if any?

Any positive contribution is very much appreciated!

Thank you very much in advance!

Jamie D

To properly understand how IM works, you need to know what is IM. Focus on SEO, for instance, how search engines work. Know the spider bots to understand the importance of keywords.

The list building, article submission, forum posting, etc. comes next.

Hi JamieD87, my 2 cents worth:

In IM, there are many ways to earn money, for the beginners, I guess the most popular ways will be
    1. Monetize your site/blog through ads like Google's adsense
    2. Selling products/services of others through affiliation programs (like Amazon, Clickabank etc...)
    3. Sell your own products/services e.g. Infoproducts like ebooks, SEO etc...

I am sure there are others ways but the key is that there are too much information floating around that you can learn and there is no way that you can learn 100% of them, thus, find your niche and get the Action started/going and learn along the way...

    Cheers!

You're so right about needing to teach the basics first
before moving on to the more advanced stuff.

The basics of Internet Marketing IMO are...

      1. Effective Market Selection

Your choice of target market will determine the income
      potential of your business.

Choose wrongly and you can struggle unnecessarily.
Choose well, and Internet Marketing becomes a whole
      lot easier.

Choose a market that has rabid buyers who are proven
to buy products similar to the ones you want to sell or
      promote as an affiliate.

      2. Build a List

To be able to earn a more consistent income, you need
to build a list of prospects and customers who know,
      like and trust you.

To build a list, you need to know how to at least set-up
a squeeze page, put up an opt-in form and follow-up with
      subscribers via autoresponders.

Develop the relationship over time by giving your list
relevant content and offers that help them get what
      they want.

      3. Have Enticing Offers

To be able to make money you have to have offers that
people are will buy. These could be offers for your own
products and services, affiliate offers, etc.

You also need to learn how to sell via the written word
so developing effective copywriting skills is essential.

Learn how to select great offers and sell them effectively
      with great copy.

      4. Traffic Generation

Choosing a good market and having an enticing offer are
only part of the story. You need to learn how to direct
human visitors - i.e. traffic - to see and respond to your
      offers.

Get good at generating traffic from a particular method and
then learn more ways to generate traffic too so you can
spread your risk and minimize over-reliance on one method.

      5. Taking Action

The fortune is in the follow-up. Develop a plan to regularly
follow-up with your subscribers to turn prospects into
customers, and turn customers into repeat customers.

Internet Marketing can be relatively easy if people focus
on DOING the fundamentals rather than getting lost in the
      fancy stuff and shiny objects.

People will learn and earn more by DOING than they ever
      will by just study alone.

Taking action on something is often the most important step
      of all.

      Dedicated to mutual success,

      Shaun

In my opinion I would say that the most important thing that you should start off with is learning how to get into the mindset of your market. Then install the mentality that you have to help them as best you can. So, what do they crave? Then give it to them.

Of course, you can't do this without knowing what market you are in so niche selection is important but I honestly think that if you were to pick a random market and learn how to get in their heads, even if you don't make any money from your first venture, you will have the set of skills that are essential.

All the other technical stuff that is learnt from then on will be much more effective.

I strongly believe that the most important thing a newbie needs to take care of is how to handle all this new knowledge he/she is exposed to. Getting your hands on the info is easy, making it work for you and not against you is the hard part. Information overload is the easiest way to become utterly overwhelmed and eventually paralyzed.
So, in my opinion, the basis of a successful internet marketing career is to make the right decisions straight from the beginning:

      1) Before buying anything do a thorough search engine research to discover the vital steps you need to take. The question you posted here would be a great start for such a research. Compare and combine the different answers you will find (through articles, videos, blog posts etc.) and make a list of the steps that are common to most of them.
      2) Define your goals (be as accurate as possible here) and prioritize your steps according to your needs.
      3) Make a list of the things that you feel you could do well online. It is vital to focus on your strengths rather than your weaknesses. Make sure to start from the things you really enjoy: You will not mind working endless hours on perfecting these skills, as you will be passion driven.
      4) Make the most vital decision of your internet marketing venture: Promise to yourself to take immediate, massive action on everything you learn.
      5) Stick to one method (as long as it feels right for you) and make it work before you move on to the next one.
      6) Start gathering in well established internet marketing forums (such as the warriorforum) and be as active as you can, even as a greenest newbie in the internet marketing world.
      7) Start "following" seasoned marketers that are where you want to be. Learn from them as much as you can and model their success. Feel free to contact them and start investing in their products.
      8) Socializing in internet marketing forums will help you build relationships with like-minded people (mindset is huge as far as internet marketing success is concerned!) and find your future business partners: You will provide your best skills to them and they will do the same. It's a win win!
      9) Do it your way! After digesting all the knowledge, methods and formulas you decide to consume, start inserting your own "tone" to things by filtering all this info through your own perspective. In other words, it's essential to discover your own voice and let others hear it. Don't hesitate testing, tweaking, combining different methods, or even reversing popular tactics in order to create your own.
      10) Never give up! Arm yourself with strength and courage and commit to your success. Don't let disappointment separate you from your dreams. Believe in yourself and your special virtues. You have something everyone wants, that can eventually make our world a better place. Go ahead and bring it out!

I hope you find something that resonates with you in these 10 suggestions.
I wish you all the best!

I would definitely advise a newbie to learn about IM first before diving in. There are plenty of free online courses (like the Challenge) which teach the basics, like:

    what is a squeeze page?
how to create a web page,?
    what is an autoresponder?
    traffic methods, etc...

Also a newbie must get familiar with the IM lingo

Your are on this planet to tell your story. The only thing anyone can give you is information.

What you really need is knowledge. And the only way to get knowledge is through you own experience.

Information combine with real life experience becomes your story. All of us have read all the books about the masters.

After you have the information (that is the easy part) that turns into knowledge then you are into the world of wisdom.

At first, learning from others appears to be the fast track to money and success but it has to turn into your story.

Money flows to people who understand it, and it flow away from people who don't. Money is an illusion. You can't find a business on the internet but you can build one if focus on yourself.

The point I'm trying to make is there is a difference between someone else's straight line and your straight line.

None of this stuff is an original idea from me because I'm not good a coming up with new ideas. But I understand, because I fell for it myself.

The only thing coaching can do is help you get lost in the moment. Having been a good athlete in High School and College I think my understanding is correct.

The basics of IM is to click with the searchers on an emotional level all the way through the process.

Thought i might chime in with...

Once you have selected your niche, have your site/squeezepage set up, it all comes down to traffic (the amount of people coming to your site) and conversions (how many people sign up to your list/ buy a product etc)

Oh and track EVERYTHING => so you know where the best quality traffic is coming from.

    Good luck!

Newbies will tend to suffer from information overload for awhile. The basics cover a lot of ground and are just not something that's easy to teach in a few days.

    The basic model is:

    1. Find a niche
    2. Create a site
    3. Get paid

    The devil's in the details.

Soccer is not like IM. IM is just like regular marketing...you're just using different tools. So it's hard to give you the "basics of IM" since there's at least a million different ways to make money online. If you would have asked about the basics of PPC or SEO it would have been a little bit easier. What you should do is just stay on this site for a week. Read a lot of posts and do some googling for newbie guides. Things will fall into place after a while.

Okay, coach, here it's not win-lose it's either win-win or lose-lose. As long as you focus on giving your readers what they want, helping them get what they need, the monetization will follow without you having to be pushy.

It'll probaby take 3-6 months to get your head screwed on right, do the niche research so you can rationally chose which one(s) you want to enter and have a very good idea how well it/they will monetize, learn the ins and outs of SEO and writing articles, blogs, etc., get into the habit of building your business (as opposed to buying pixie dust and waiting to get rich).

And my all-time favorite ancient Chinese proverb: Don't worry; don't worry; don't worry! You can get all the help you need right here, either free or ridiculous cheap! If you still can't do it yourself, you can outsource as much as you need to - again, very reasonably priced.

Don't get hung up on the technical side or waste weeks and months learning how to do something that's only going to take a few minutes or a few hours to finish. (I'm thinking here in terms of HTML, CSS, PHP, and all matters about web and page "design.") Every host worth using - and there aren't really more than a handful - has free templates that install beautifully; even better IMNSHO is WordPress. However, you will have to pay close attention to how you configure your settings - particularly security and backups. Let all the heavy lifting be done by these templates and plugins. You need to concentrate on developing your content and your sales funnel.
(In fact, you should add something to your content or your sales funnel each day before you check your e-mail to see how many sales you've made overnght!)

your getting some crazy responses here the basics of internet marketing are

1.) have a product to sell preferably your own

2.) Copy writing baisc copy and persuasion here will be good.

    3.) conversion testing

4.) traffic I use mainly ppc and affiliates, I teach my affiliates a lot of free traffic methods as well.

yes obviously there is more to this overall system but if you master these basics you will have a strong foundation to build off of.

I just want to add this... like anything else you take the information and use it to your best interest. I don't see anything in the responses that is off the wall here.

Most of what I see is mechanical stuff. Its been my experienced that thoughts are very important to the process. Don't panic when you see something different like, the mental part of game. For me, the mechanics did not work until I got all that noise out of my head.

There are two things you have to learn:
      1. How to sell
      2. How to sell online

      Just my 2 cents.

In order to succeed online, you need to start by considering two things:

    1. What are you passionate about? Is there a certain field or topic that you love? Remember, you are going to be spending your time writing about, promoting, learning more about, and talking about your niche. If it's not something that you're passionate about, you're going to get sick of it.

    2. What are you good at? Can you offer a service as opposed to a physical or affiliate product? Could you become a designer or a writer? Or, maybe you're a great salesman and affiliate marketing would be perfect for you. Or, maybe you're incredibly creative and you want to create your own product. Any of these choices can make you money (with the right approach and hard work, of course! )

Until you answer those two questions, it's impossible to get out of the starting gates (so to speak) and get rolling. It really does no good to learn about SEO, PPC, article marketing, etc. until you figure out exactly what you want to do. Once you've chosen a niche, then you can move forward and start to learn the rest.

I am a big believer in starting with article marketing. This helps to teach them a marketing method that includes basic SEO, building of a website, and more. It is a great basis and makes it much easier to transition to other methods of marketing. Plus most all successful internet marketers use article marketing as a part of their business.

        Hey Jamie

If it was me the very first thing I would drill into a complete newbies head would be your list and the power of having a list of people who are allready interested in the niche you are in

I would teach nothing else but this for beginning

Yes, you will be after mentioning this word 'niche' but i would re-enforce that right now all the newbie must understand is the list. Teach them evrything there is to know about it and the power of it

Then when the power of the list is tottaly understood I would then move onto explaining 'niche'

        Then,
        • Squeeze page
        • attractive FREE offer
        • conversions
        • traffic
        • building a relationship with your list
        • picking great products to promote
        Hope this helps you somewhat.....
