I made my first Amazon sale today on my kitchen accessories site...

489 unique visitors to the site
144 clicks to Amazon
2 sales of phone accessories! Making a whole 32p

I know its a tiny amount of money, but it's a start...

      Hi Derekad,

The site is about 5 weeks old, and I've been gradually adding content and backlinks.

I'm just gearing up the work on this site, and focusing on 3 posts per day, adding product reviews etc

I saw your website, it is very good. However I will not put Adsense on Amazon site. Unless cpc is very high.

Thanks for having a look at my site.

Can I ask why you wouldn't use adsense as well?

I have had some clicks on the sidebar ads, nothing on the banner, value about 30p per click.

Do you feel the adsense is distracting?

Great start. Keep going. Unfortunately, Amazon has banned associates in my state. I was doing well with them. They were a great company to deal with.

    Congratulations on your first sales.

I know you didn't ask for input on your site, but I'll provide some anyway, if you don't mind my doing so ...

    (1) Your site doesn't look bad at all, but it's kind of cluttered. Pretty damn cluttered, in fact, I think. Between the menu bar, the AdSense ads, the side navigation and the various coloured headings, images and so on, it's hard to see your Amazon affiliate links.

    (2) In light of the above point, and if you want to potentially increase your Amazon earnings, consider:
    (a) Removing the AdSense ads.

    - and -

    (b) Increasing the number and prominence (size, colour, positioning) of the Amazon text links. And make your "call to action" more obvious - not stuff like "Available on Amazon", but "Buy at Amazon!" prefaced with a little explanation that Amazon has a diverse selection of <whatever> products, and is about the cheapest around. Of course, it doesn't really matter whether they buy the exact product you're promoting - once they're there, they're going to browse and be aroused, and a good proportion of them will buy something. But they won't if they don't first see your links, or aren't compelled to click on them and therefore never get through to Amazon at all.

    Good luck.

Nice work. Im a newbie and know how encouragig the first sales can be. My first sale was for a completely unrelated item.....an egg piercer?!
Not a sexy or exciting item I'll admit but I revelled in the $0.32 it paid me!

Making sales on Amazon is easy...if you are ranking for the right keywords and getting the type of targeted visitors you need.

Spend most of your time getting that site ranked. A bit stronger call to action might help you also. Most people need to really see a buy sign.

Correct me if I'm wrong but my impression of Amazon was this:
The commissions aren't so great as say products on CB or other places you can promote as an affiliate, but once someone clicks on your Amazon link you get a commission from ANYTHING they purchase for a while, not just the product you linked to. I, for example, buy everything off Amazon, so if someone tagged me with their affiliate ID at some point, I'd be a goldmine!
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[3904382].message }}
  • Profile picture of the author THK
Yes Nate, you get commission on anything they purchase, not just the product you are promoting on your site, in that session. If they close their browser, go for lunch, then come back and buy something, you will not get the credit.

I believe Amazon stamp the visitor with a 24 hour cookie, so anything bought in that 24 hours earns you commission.

I stand corrected. My understanding was they changed it to browser session, but it seems like that is not the case. From their site-

A "Session" begins when a customer clicks through a Special Link on your site to the Amazon Site and ends upon the first to occur of the following: (x) 24 hours elapses from the customer's initial click-through; (y) the customer places an order for a Product that is not a Digital Product; or (z) the customer follows a link to the Amazon Site that is formatted with an Associate's tag that is not assigned to you.
        Thanks profitsforall

Congrats on the first Amazon orders.

Regarding these quotes, I would stick with the Adsense. You will make more money with that looking at these stats.

32p is indeed a start, but (and I may be biased) but for 144 clicks to Amazon, 32p seems a pretty good deal for Amazon but you are only getting 0.2p per click. Compare that to any PPC on the web and that's the cheapest targeted traffic in the world

Affiliates on our program (Shiree Odiz), selling diamond jewelry, get $250 on average, per sale and the conversion rate is approx. 1:1000 for targeted traffic...

I've never tried Amazon... Maybe this is a mistake, but the commissions they pay really don't motivate me. I think they start at 4% if I remember right, not very appealing. I know the brand Amazon itself is great for conversions, but does that really compensate for such low commission rates? I'm not convinced... Then again, I never tried, so I keep an open mind.

      Thanks for all the congratulations...

Quick update...$2.04 on Adsense last night!

I'm loathed to remove adsense, as I'll admit that is what I was originally targetting, with Amazon as a secondary for content.

However, I have removed the leaderboard ad, to try to clean up the look of the site. It's just a test to see how it goes.

Also i'm not finding adsense very targetted on what ads they provide, all kitchen planners and fitters, nothing on toasters!

I've also taken your advice and added big Amazon buy buttons...Thanks
