What could a huge increase in direct traffic?

In the past hour or so I've had about 150 visits to a site that generally only gets about 20 per day. About 90% of these are showing as "direct" traffic in google analytics.

Any ideas? I have done nothing differently recently, and don't have a domain name that should be getting a ton of type in traffic.

    Check your logs.

See if they're search engine bots or spiders.

They're clicking on adsense ads, so that seems unlikely.

It's probably been mentioned somewhere that's not a link. For example if I link to my site, digitaldeliveryapp.com, like this you have to copy and paste it in the browser. Consequently Analytics doesn't know where the user has come from.

If you setup Google Alerts for your url you'll often find out the source just a few days/week later when google next indexes the page

Thanks, just set up the alert. It's up to almost 200 visits now. Just wish I knew where it was coming from...

Showing as unique visitors, and I don't know how to dig any deeper into it. I just hope it keeps up. It's converting well. Would just like to know where it's coming from so I could go get more of it.

I honestly think Google Analytics is far from being accurate. I've too many direct visitors to be true on my own stats too. I think if your browser's privacy settings are high, Google Analytics think you came from yourself.

Are there any other ways I can figure this out? Traffic just crossed the 250 mark, which may not be a lot for people here, but this site gets like 20 visitors on a good day.

I looked at the server logs, and all I see is gibrish. Really sucks that I can't figure out where this is coming from so I could keep it flowing.

Is your site a wordpress site? I like to use this free plugin to see where the visitors are coming from: Visitor Maps and Who's Online

  • Capture the optins and put a 3rd field for a day or 2 "Where did you hear about us" you will loose a few leads but find out where they are from then remove it. I have done that a few times.

second option a survey to the optins from those days
