Dupe Content Question

How does google know which site content came from first?

I wrote a review site the other day, and now I am seeing my content word for word on another site, and yet they are still outranking me LOL.

Will Google know that it came from my site initially?

Or, am I going to get penalized for my own hard work?

It doesn't really matter that much who came first. If two duplicate articles are competing for the same keyword, it's likely that Google will just rank the one with more authority (links.) That said, I imagine it's by order of indexing, and I'm sure it plays somewhat of a factor, although I think it's overplayed.

Correct. Google will show the page with higher authority. That's why you got outranked.

  • I think these guys are right, but I still find it very odd that Google has never thought of this before. It seems to me if you were first, it's not that hard for the search spiders to have a log date that would prove who put it up first so, regardless of who has more 'authority', credit would be given to who actually wrote the darn thing.

I mean, why should the OP even bother writing anything else if all of his work is just going to get credited to the 'big guy'? By 'credited' I don't mean authorship, but rather search engine placement.

This is something that has bothered me for a long time.

While I sympathize with you and the OP and agree with your rationale, the way Google discovers new web pages is not necessarily in the order in which they were created. So, it's really impossible for Google to decide with any sufficient degree of certainty that a certain page was published before another.
