Made my first site, need a little information

Hello,

Well after having a lot of spare time on my hands and some time going through this forum I decided to make my first IM site.

I think i've got the basics, done the research, found a keyword and made a site around it, but it is trying to get ranked in Google that is the problem. When I enter my keywords with " around them, the site can be seen on the first page, but take those away and it's nowhere to be seen... how much SEO is needed to get the site ranked on the first page? any information that would help would be great.

It is my first site after all and I wasn't expecting success the first shot, more of a learning experience.

Yea, your first site will always be more of a learning experience than a millionaire maker. I would suggest researching the common free ways to get traffic to your site. I would also suggest to keep the content updated regularly. Good luck.

    Hey there

I was in a similar position as you, about 2 months ago... started the whole thing easy, as you call it "learning experience".

I think "how much SEO" largely depends on the competition you get when searching for your keyword. Not only the quantity, but the quality of your competition (google "pagerank" for more details).

If the top 5 pages have a high PR, are heavily on-page optimized for your keyword, and are receiving a large amount of traffic each day - then it's gonna be hell of a fight to beat them

Anyway as for the SEO part - backlinks are the whole deal.

The more do-follow, relevant, quality backlinks (with your anchor as text) you can get - the better you will rank in the search engines listings. Simple as that! But you gotta have patience

A first site is always in the stage of experimenting. You have ups and downs on it. What you have to do to be on the top search at google and get massive traffic is to make a high quality content, join forums, backlinking, promotion and etc. In these ways, you will definitely succeed.

I always feel time is the best ranker in google. With time your site will become bigger and age nicely into a authority if you take care of it and keep content rolling. I started my 1st site a few months ago and have been making thousands off it. Well half my wages...

It depends on the number of competitors and the level of competition .

The more competitors and tougher competitors you have , the more SEO you are going to need .

First of all, congratulations on creating your site. It always feels good to do something like that.

Everyone above has good points. It isnt realistic to expect page 1 rankings immediately on your 1st site.

There are many things that go into SEO. You could definitely keep adding some good content. You probably want to do that anyway, although there are more important things in SEO.

Since you've done your keyword research, you should use this info to make your title, header, description, and url all relevant to what you are trying to do and what you are trying to rank for.

Also, you need solid backlinks. You need to go out and work daily at building this site. You cannot just add 1000 backlinks here and there. That stuff doesnt work anymore.

You need to wake up each day and dedicate yourself to adding a steady amount of backlinks from high PR sites (2 and above or 3 and above) and continue this for a month or two. You will see results...

I cannot stress to you the importance of adding 5 or 10 high quality backlinks a day versus adding 500 a day from non-relevant, low PR sites.

In SEO, you have to be consistent, and in it for the long haul. Good luck getting yourself ranked and achieving traffic!

You can not rely on the search engines to get you traffic. It may work and it may not work.

The best way in to get as many backlinks to it as possible.

You can do that with article marketing and forum marketing. You can also do video marketing and blog posting.

When you type the quotes around your keywords it means that you are searching for that exact term. Without the qoutes, G. shows yous all the pages indexed that have the keywords in any combination.

Thanks for the help guys, i'll probably continue with this site for the sake of learning. Start with the back links and adding relevant content often.

The competition is around 20k and the top page does have another wordpress blog, also has yahoo answers and forum posts so with a little effort hopefully I can rank.

Starting out I guess maybe 20k was a little ambitious, I was aiming for around 10k but it was tough finding a good keyword for around that figure.

anyway, thanks again and onwards and upwords!
