professional opinion on competition

hi wf, leg here.

iv been looking around for a nieche and think i might have found one to get started in! however i need your opinions on the matter, so heres some figures:

About 364,000 results (specific search)
60,500 Global Monthly Searches
Competition on Google Keyword Tool is 1/3 of a bar

however googles #1 holder does not have any of the keywords in there domain name, #3 and #4 both do but only #3 is a .com domain

#3 yahoo site explorer shows 1698 pages and 1632 inlinks


going up against that as a begginer is......stupid right?

just looking for advice

    If you have the patience to wait for your site to mature in the rankings, it sounds like it could be done.
    What are the backlinks and pagerank like for sites 1 and 2?

      Not relevant, Leg. (I know people say it is, but they're mistaken).

      If you want to compete for this keyword, you really have only about 5 true competitors, and those are the 5(ish) at the top of the first page. Because if you can't get your site up there, you probably don't get enough traffic to make it worth doing (if, as we assume from the question, you want organic traffic). It makes no difference at all whether those first 5 sites are followed by 995 others or 363,995 others. All that really matters is your assessment of the SEO quality of the top few (i.e. whether you might ever beat/replace them).

      Quality matters. Quantity ... not so much.

      Looks like you found how to check PR? (Worth knowing, but in itself it's not that important, as you can see from the regularity with which lower-PR's outrank higher PR's in Google's SERP's).

      For backlink-checking, the two most important things of which to be aware are ...

      (i) No backlink-checker is completely reliable;

      (ii) It matters what the backlinks are, not how many there are: context-relevant backlinks from decent sites are enormously valuable; article directory backlinks and/or forum profile backlinks are almost worthless (i.e. it's dead easy to beat sites whose webmasters have depended on those backlinks).

      Quality matters. Quantity ... not so much.
