Need advice on outsourcing

Hi,

I've reached the point now where I am making a decent monthly income. It's not much, but it's enough to take and grow I believe.

I'm pretty good at most jobs. I do all of my own work...

content creation
web design
graphic design
research
videos...you name it

I'm also very experienced in link building and have the necessary tools, but I absolutely hate building backlinks. I know it inside and out, but I really dislike it and find it consumes all of my time most days.

In the past I have hired SEO companies to do this for me, but they would give me crummy links, build them too fast, etc. I soon realized that these people don't know what they are doing and I wish that I hadn't used them (because they would send my sites into the crapper immediately).

What I need is to hire a VA who can do this for me full time, but I'm not sure where to begin.

I'm thinking about giving candidates a test project to work on and see how they work, what kind of links they get, and if they understand how to get variety, build at a nice rhythm, etc...

But I feel hesitant...I think this is because I'm so nervous based on past experiences...

Any tips? have any of you guys ever used a virtual assistant who actually knows what they are doing/treats the client's project like their own? can you tell me what kinds of going rates there are? things to avoid? etc...

Thanks for your help

post your project on freelancer.com and you will have a lot of people bidding on it. You can review their previous work and you will more than likely find a great VA at an amazing price. I have used them a lot and it has led to me making a lot more money then I ever could trying to do it all on my own.

If you give candidates a "test" project without sufficient instructions, you are setting them up to fail. The only person who knows exactly what you want done is you. So what you need to do is create very specific instructions. Instructions so brain-dead clear that you could hand them to a different VA every month and have them be able to follow them.

In short, you need to create a system for your VA. Then your "test" will be looking for the holes in your own system... to see what you forgot to add to the instructions. Once you get the system documented so anyone can follow it without screwing up, you'll be able to hire any VA.

I would sign up for odesk.com
and send an email letting everyone
that you need backlink work done
you should get a ton of applications
then just hire the right candidate.

Thanks everyone for the wonderful advice. I'll definitely check out those WSO's too. Also, Linda_C - you are dead right.

I have a system for building back links, and I know to give clear cut instructions. I wonder if doing camtasia how-to videos will be OK, but it would almost be better just to give written instruction.

Ideally it would be great to work with someone who can understand how to go about finding high PR links, or what it means to grab profile links, etc...

I guess I'll just have to find the right person. I don't really want to have to pay someone if I have to baby sit them all the time.

I also believe that people do better work when you don't micro-manage them, but perhaps that could back fire in this case?

Any thoughts on what kind of a instructional system would be good?

Sorry if this is annoying, but I figure people can learn from reading this

I think with a good system for a VA to follow, you won't have to babysit or micro manage. Initially, you'll be babysitting your system, not so much the worker.

Think of it like the way McDonalds and every franchise has a system. Anyone can walk in, open the book, and run the business exactly the same. That's kind of what you need to create - steps for everything, including finding high PR, etc.

IMHO, it might be better to use text (pdf?) than video -- they can keep it open while working instead of having to watch/rewatch video.

Well, sell yourself in freelancer sites like odesk.com or freelancer.com. There are lot of people there who need workers. Maybe they can pick you up.
