IM for a local business - OTO ideas

Hi,

This is my first post but I've learned a lot just by reading this forum.

Here's my situation. My wife and I own a veterinary clinic. I do the marketing (she's the vet). I'm trying to use IM techniques to grow our business.

I read on this forum that a good way to build a list is to send paid traffic to a squeeze page for a free report and then put a OTO on the thank you page.

My question is: how do I pick a good OTO...?

For example, we have a great spay/neuter service. Also we have a spay/neuter report. I've been advertising the report using geotargeted Google display network ads and I will use Facebook too.

However I'd like to monetize the thank you page.

Thanks,

Richard

Hey Richard. The best move you can make in a local business is get your Google Places into the #1 spot. You also want to be #1 in your local search. It's easier than you think.

Check out what's happening with mobile. You'll get the idea.

List building is great but remember you're local.

Post Cards. Post Cards is the way to build your list. Send the locals posts cards introducing your business and inviting them to your website for their free gift. Give them something good when they get to your site in exchange for their email.

Hire more vets because once you have their email there all yours any time you want them.

For a vet I'd give away a package of wipes for cleaning up after their pets. Put them in an 8X11 type bag with your business info on one side and some type of emergency how-to about their pets safety. Maybe a statement like "KEEP THESE WIPES IN YOUR CAR".

Every time they get in their car you'll be there with them. It works, I did for over 30 years.

Where ever you are plaster your business cards, flyers or what ever everywhere. Ads everywhere all the time. All these little things together will put you at the front of the pack.

Hi Richard, this is Richard too (from Singapore). Just thinking out loud, have you made use of social media like facebook, twitter to market your services? I find that it's a great way to attract traffics to online or offline business.

    All the best!

    Cheers!

Give a discount on the first visit. Or maybe give any new customer half off for vaccinations on the second pet when the owner brings in a pair of dogs or cats. You could offer a free checkup for older older pets, first timers only. You could offer a discount on teeth cleaning, maybe 25 - 30% off.

I kinda like stuff geared to bringing in two or more animals. Full price for the first and a discount for the second and others. That way you're pulling in customers that will end up spending more because they have two or more animals. First time visits only. You could actually do this for any of your services. I mentioned teeth cleaning because I know there's a high markup for that. Hope this helps. Good luck.

This is part of the problem with IM vs Brick & Mortar. The techniques used in IM and digital sales often do not translate well to Brick & Mortar.

If you hit up your visitors with a squeeze page, send them a free report, hit them up with a OTO and then send them mailings, I'm going to bet the vast majority will never walk into your clinic.

If you get local people into your vet clinic, they're worth far more in ongoing vet visits than they are on a list, but you'll likely alienate them long before they'll ever walk into your clinic.

Instead, you need to craft your messages towards face to face interaction. You want to offer a squeeze page - fine - but offer them something that will bring them into the clinic. A printable coupon for a discount on their first visit, or a special rate on getting their shots, etc. Not a free report. A free report is an Internet/digital/infoproduct thing, not a brick and mortar thing.

Then create a proper list for your clients -- set up your mailings to send out reminders when it's time for an annual checkup, teeth cleanings, shots, etc. Not "internet" offers and downloads.

If you want to reach beyond your local market, you could look at doing a digital product on pet care - maybe even a book on Kindle that your wife would be proud to tell her clients/customers about. Something that pet owners anywhere can buy. Sell that online.

But don't hit up local people with IM offers like you don't know the difference between selling offline services and selling digital IM - that won't go over well. Especially in a business where people are trusting your wife with their pet's health.

Growing your business isn't about following IM procedures & methods, it's about using the Internet to provide better service for your clients. Your clients are primarily local, so why hit them up with free reports when you could be enticing them to come into the clinic?

Think of your wife's 5 best clients. The ones who come in and smile and trust her to take care of their beloved pet and then pay their bill...would you offer those people a free report to get them on a list and then hit them up with an OTO? Because if you wouldn't do that to your wife's paying clients, then it's not the right approach for bringing in new customers, either.

I say all the above because my experience is 14 years bringing offline businesses online successfully... and I think if you go about it the IM way, you may not get the result you are hoping for.

Your OTO could be to prepay for a service that you offer.

If you offer service XYZ for $200, sell the a prepaid coupon to buy it now for $50, $75 or $100. Make it a no-brainer to buy ahead of time. That way you lock them in to coming into the clinic.

Once they are their, make them a customer for life.

WOW thank you all very much for the replies!!

      SiteSmarty:
      - We're already #1 in local search, but only for searches in our town. We're right on the edge of another town and don't rank well for that at all. I can use AdWords to solve that problem.

      - What is happening with mobile...? Please explain.

      - Problem with postcards is that you have to put out a lot of money and wait months for ROI. I.e. you have to do multiple mailings to get a good response and if the offer is something like a free exam you have to wait until the client's second visit to make money. This is no good if you put the bill from the postcard company on a credit card which is due at the end of the month, even though the lifetime value of the average client may be thousands of dollars.
I actually think postcards would work well for us as long as the offer was good (not something free, I don't know exactly what yet), but we don't have the $$$ to experiment at this time.
      - Not sure about wipes but your idea made me think of poop bags...that could work well. Thanks!

      rich8169:
      - We're using Facebook but not Twitter. I plan to sign up for Twitter soon. I've found Facebook to be great for client nurture but not good for new client acquisition, at least not without some sort of paid campaign and a sales funnel. I would like to develop our Facebook more and would be very interested to hear your experiences.

      Tsnyder:
      - I did e-mail you, thank you!

      travlinguy:
      - We've done discounts on dentals with some success. February is traditionally dental month and we did a 20% off offer this year. I have some ideas to improve the marketing of it for next year (this year I wasn't organized enough).
      - BUT I'm not sure how well it would work for a OTO because it would only be appropriate for prospects who knew their pets were in need of a dental. I don't think there would be enough of those people.

      Linda_C:
      - you say "Your clients are primarily local, so why hit them up with free reports when you could be enticing them to come into the clinic?". The reason is that a lot of visitors to our site aren't ready to come and see us yet. E.g. their pet isn't sick or due for anything. By offering a free report in exchange for their e-mail address we can market to them using an e-mail autoresponder until they are ready to come in. I agree that the goal has to be to get them into the clinic.

      - I have given free reports to existing clients (though not a OTO as I don't have one yet). They appreciated it. If the content's good and they're interested in the topic it's a great way to educate people. For example, I sent a copy of our parasite report to someone whose dog was diagnosed with intestinal parasites. I might offer a OTO to an existing client. I was thinking about an ebook on pet insurance. A lot of people are interested in that. If the ebook cost $5 and there was $5 or more value in it, I think I would be ok offering it to them.

      - I would say that IM is very applicable to all local businesses provided keywords related to their product or service are searched for on the Internet in useful volume, by people in their local area. The major pitfall is local search volume (it can be so low as to rule out many relevant keywords, and make testing impractical) and geotargeting (Google's geotargeting isn't accurate enough). Another pitfall for us is that a lot of people searching online want information as to how to treat their pets at home, but we don't want people to do that, we want them to come to our clinic! I think an ebook on treating your pets at home would do well if marketed properly (there are probably many such books already) and it would be a way to make money from people beyond our local market as you say, but we won't be publishing one.

      - you say: "Instead, you need to craft your messages towards face to face interaction. You want to offer a squeeze page - fine - but offer them something that will bring them into the clinic. A printable coupon for a discount on their first visit, or a special rate on getting their shots, etc."

We have had some success with free exam coupons but not on squeeze pages. Here's why (I think):
      1. People who don't need a vet right now (don't have a sick pet or a pet that's due for something) want something NOW in exchange for their e-mail address. A free exam requires them to call to make an appointment, take time out of their day, load their dog (that doesn't need a vet anyway) in the car, etc...it's too much work.
      2. People who DO need a vet right now just want the coupon. They don't want to jump through a bunch of hoops. A lot of our competitors offer free first exams without an opt-in required. Why should they be bothered to opt-in? Also, exams have become a commodity. However, a cool report - that's unique.

BTW, here are two non-obvious problems with free exams:
      1. They consume a lot of doctor time (which is expensive and precious).
      2. Some clients are crappy and drift from clinic to clinic - one free exam offer to the next. We really don't want to attract people like this!

Hence, I think a better tactic would be to offer people who don't need a vet right now a free report on something related to pet health, use a OTO to cover the cost of the PPC, and use an autoresponder to (i) send them a coupon for use when they are ready to come in and (ii) build up a relationship so they want to come in enough to be bothered to call for the appointment, load the dog in the car, etc.

      - We already send reminders for vaccines etc., I need to improve them but that's another story!

      VegasGreg:
      - This idea could work. Maybe not for a $200 service as something that expensive would usually be a surgery and the final price for these often depends on the particular pet...but maybe say a $15 parasite screen test (save $20!!) - they pre-pay and we make enough profit to cover the lab fee and the PPC fee. Thanks for the tip!!!

Thanks again for all the help!!! Really appreciate it!!!!

    Richard...

The purpose of an OTO is selling. Your job in this case is to educate your prospects. It certainly doesn't have to be a full-blown IM style sales page but you can easily use a soft sell educational type appeal.

Stuff like, dental care is just as important for pets as for people… your pets' teeth, like your own, have a predictable lifespan, a lifespan that has been proven can be extended with proper care. At XXX vet care we know that when your pet is happy and healthy, you are too...

We realize you want the best for doggy darlin’ and so do we. Many people neglect their pets’ teeth simply because they’re not aware how important dental care is for them…

For your own peace of mind you owe it to yourself and your beloved pet to get a cleaning and checkup, especially while we have this deeply discounted, one time special running… etc.

If you need a writer who can make it work, let me know.
