*Scratches head*: OK, so what are Flippa buyers really looking for?

OK, help me understand the site-buying mindset. Go to Flippa, click on Just Sold and look at the recently sold sites (they are filtered by default for those that have sold for $2000+) - you'll see plenty of sites reporting no earnings, or very little, yet selling for four-figure sums.

Then if you delete the $2000+ filter on the left and click Update Search, you see everything that has sold regardless of the price. Now we get sites that have sold for more realistic, low triple-figure amounts.

OK, so the low-selling sites are predominantly reporting no or small earnings, whereas the high-ticket sites are MOSTLY reporting some sort of revenue.

But: https://flippa.com/135380-ipadwallpapers-com, sold for $2800, no revenue?

What makes that so much better than https://flippa.com/141159-online-stock-trade ($175)?!

Is it really all about some mysterious factor of "potential"?

I think people feel they can make money by moving the idea forward. I wouldn't be so sure that they will be successful, but the "feeling" that something can make money is the first thing people have before they buy a site. It is your job to create that feeling.

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.

Hmm, a $2800-dollar feeling, eh? Seems a lot of money just to spend on a 'feeling' though I guess many of these buyers know what they are doing or have plans we know nothing of. Still, it's hard still to see why iPad wallpapers have such potential whereas online stock trading ($17.00 Adsense clicks..!) doesn't...

Who says you can't earn money as an eBay affiliate any more? My stats say otherwise

I agree completely. The first site you mention has a specific and special niche feel. It's something that's hot in the market place right now without too much competition.

The second site serves a far more generic, well know niche which doesn't carry the same level of excitement as something new and shiny.

It really does come down to what the site makes people feel. If they see potential untapped dollar signs they're going to spend a lot more to secure the site for themselves as opposed to something more generic.

Not been funny -- but the answer is clear -- just by looking at the keywords. Ipad wallpapers are a real good potential niche, the other isnt that good.

If that isnt clear enough, here are the reasons why i would pay $2800 for ipadwallpapers, and only $175 for the other one.

    iPadWallpapers.com - exact phrase domain.
    Already getting visitors.
    Got 1000 backlinks.
The current site is garbage - and has HUGH potential to be improved and make money.

I actually think that who got that wallpaper site got a good deal - and think the domain alone would be worth that to someone who knows what they are doing. The backlinks,pr1,and 1 year old site just make it even better.

OK, so we are basically saying it's the DOMAIN that's of interest in this case and the site is just filler. I wonder when you get down to it how many sites sold on Flippa really are just about the domain and how many are actually decent "turnkey sites" with actual revenue. I must dig through some old listings and see what the new owners did with their purchase!

I suppose I am just trying to see what I could do with some old domains of mine that aren't getting any love. So I guess it's a choice between selling buyers on the domain and its potential for development, brandability or whatever, or sell on a specific revenue claim and a turnkey site. Maybe there's more options there too - what about those factors people love like existing Pagerank, number of backlinks etc? Though come to think of it, most of my old sites are lemons that don't fit into any of those categories, LOL.

I've just got back into flipping sites again. A recent auction of mine I guess the buyer thought the domain name was worth more than the site. It is currently listed for sale at $288... it was purchased from me for $XX. Aged domain around 9 years old. Should have put a reserve. But that is the gamble I took.

Now to make you scratch your head even more, consider that Apple could nuke that $2,800.00 site tomorrow for trademark infringement.

Yeah, that had occurred to me, but you would be surprised - it seems Apple do not concern themselves with that stuff. If you search Chilling Effects Clearinghouse for Apple Computers Inc. you will see very little C&D activity on their part (compared with Disney, say). Risk people are willing to take, I guess...

If I may jump in with another site that is just sold for 13,600 dollars.
    https://flippa.com/139520-top-adsense-site-100-articles-30-a-day-adsense-and-climbing-investment
When I saw this listing I was alarmed that the comments of 4 different Flippa members were deleted by the seller. What was he hiding? If I would pay that kind of money I don't want toe see anything deleted by the seller.
