Server location: Does it matter?

I'm getting involved in selling websites and web services and I will primarily be targetting small businesses in the U.K.

Most of my personal sites are hosted on U.S. based servers. I don't think the location matters for me personally.

But should the sites I'll be selling to small British businesses be on U.K. servers? Is it an issue in any way? (support for the U.S. hosting is 24 hours)

I anticipate having a large number of sites and domains and the best unlimited hosting deals I can find are in the U.S.

If I should host my new sites in the U.K. can anyone recommend a good host there? Or do big companies like Hostgator have servers around the world?

Thanks for any advice!

Agreed, the server counts when you are running a very huge selling project or targeting any specific market otherwise location does not matters. Most of the servers are located in US and Canada...

US is fine for UK audience even indians visit US hosted websites. If you have slow or heavy pages or you really care for speed than go for UK hosts.
    check Rackspace for UK hosting.
