How to automate ebook delivery after paypal payment

by ron200

Im going to put up a website selling a ebook. How do I automate the delivery of download link after the payment is made?

Ive never had any payments or downloads on my websites before just affiliate stuff so this is new to me.

I will also be using aweber if that matters at all but will probly have opt in page somewhere but wont be tied in to the purchase. Or should it be somehow?

Thanks for the help.

I currently use e-junkie to process payments and deliver products to customers automatically after they have paid. It takes about 2 minutes to set up a product with a buy now button and automatic delivery.

I have used PayPal, and if I remember correctly, you can set the payment process up to redirect customers to a "thank you" page after the the payment has been submitted. You could then upload the products to your web hosting server and link to them on the download page.

Thanks. I will check with paypal to see how that works. I cant remember does someone have to have a paypal account to use a credit card to pay? Im pretty sure yes.
How does the ejunkie work anyone can use a credit card with no other accounts right? What are the fees for ejunkie?

      • No you do not need a paypal account to pay with a credit card.

No, it isn't necessary to have a PayPal account to pay with a credit card.

With e-junkie, payments are handled through PayPal, so they are instantly deposited into your account. No account is needed to make a credit card payment with e-junkie either. The fees are based on how many products you are affiliating with your account. You can view the chart here:

  • In paypal you have the option of where they are directed after payment. Ejunkie is ideal though and only costs about $5 per month for basic service.

In addition to the comments already made. This ads another step to the process, but I believe it is very worthwhile.

What I tend to do is instead of my thank you page being just the download page (which has a link to the product they purchased, that you have loaded to your server).

I make that a customer opt in page.

So they purchase and the 'thank you' page that you have put into your Pay Pal sequence, is a Customer Opt In page. You get them to do this for a few reasons.

Customers are more valuable than Prospects
You can supply them with free updates of the product they purchased
You can give them special 'Customer Only' offers

There are probably a bunch of other good reasons to do this. So once they opt in as a Customer that then takes them to the download page for their purchase.

So if you have a list of Prospects who then become Customers aweber can be set to remove them from the one list if they opt into the other list (so you are not sending them the same messages twice).

      Hope that helps.

I understand why people do this, but I don't really think it is a good practice. If I've already entered my personal info and made the payment, I really don't appreciate having to sign up to someone's autoresponder just to get the product I paid for.

I am much more in favor of another method that Istvan posted...

Why not have an opt-in box on the downloads page and position it as getting free upgrades or other goodies? Far less intrusive.

In the end, you already have their personal info from the payment processor anyway.

I use ejunkie and amember. There are others too like DLGuard or shopping carts such as 1 Shopping Cart or Quick Sales. They all integrate with Paypal so no problems there.

Thanks Lynne. I was wondering about that also(aweber sending emails even if they had already bought)
Maybe also put an opt in on the front page(top right) for some type of freebie, to get the opt in from people who didnt buy?

I only know limited html. How do you make it so someone can just download the ebook once or within certain time frame, so they cant just copy paste the webpage link of the d/l page and pass it out to their friends, etc.?

That's one of the reasons to use E-Junkie. They store the file so that your download file is secure and can't be found on your website. And their download link expires after a few days.

But if you need to send them a link later for some reason (their hard drive crashed, etc.) E-Junkie has an easy way for you to send a new temporary link.

Also, E-Junkie has a 30-day free trial -- not just a demo -- it really works. After that, their plans start at only $5 per month. They're the most affordable I've found.

How do you guys feel about offering refunds on ebooks? I read paypal will not give refunds on digital products if you dont offer it.
Should there be a refund? how long?
What % of customers would return the ebook for refund whether they liked it or not?

If your products are good, refunds are usually not a problem. In 5 years online, I've only had 3 refund requests.

Two were scammers wanting freebies, one already had the ebook and forgot!

I just made the refunds quickly and moved on -- the best way to handle it IMHO.

Lynne, I believe you would run afoul of Paypal if you made the customer opt-in AFTER paying but BEFORE getting the goods. It's not ethical in my opinion anyway. I think most shopping cart solutions will subscribe the buyer to aWeber automatically anyway with their PP address, leaving the buyer only to confirm the opt-in (if you are using double opt-in, which you should). It's quite rare for them not to, in my experience.

I don't see how its unethical at all. On the thank you page, you can clearly state at the top of the page instructions on how to download the product they have purchased.

Then at the bottom of the page, have a customer opt in requesting they opt in to get FREE updates whenever a new version of the ebook is released. This is helping the customer, how is that being unethical? Especially when you do it at the bottom of the page and your goal is not to get their email address. It's also doubtful when you do it like this they will opt in before clicking the download link.

If doing that is still not allowed with paypal, how would you recommend sending updates to ebook customers while using the paypal payment button for payment processing?

I'm not sure we are on the same page here (pardon the pun).

You are suggesting an opt-in at the bottom of the thankyou page AFTER they have bought and gained access to the product, which sounds fine. What I am saying is it's unethical to do this:

        1) Sales page
        2) Payment
        3) Thankyou page saying "Thank you for purchasing, now please give us your email address so we can send you the product you have just paid for" (with no other way to download the product).

Insisting on an opt-in after they have paid before they can download the product is unethical, and also against Paypal's rules AFAIK.

Like I said, the most elegant solution for me is where after payment their Paypal email address is automatically subscribed to your list (yeah, that might still annoy some people) but they still get an opt-in confirmation email which they are free to ignore. I do this using Digital Access Pass and I get VERY few failed opt-ins.

DLGuard is a great way to deliver the sale. But it you can't afford it, PayPal IPN Product download Manager is a nice lower cost alternative.

I like e-junkie. If you have videos, you'll need to check the size as they have different rates depending upon that. Also, I believe it needs to just be one file (at least for their basic plan) and not multiple files. The delivery has been reliable and I have them host it (though there is an option where you host it yourself).

How do you send bonuses that you are giving away with the ebook. I find that when the customer clicks on the download button for the ebook they can't get back to the download page to get their bonuses.

I need an answer soon. My webinar is tonight.

This is a really great Thread. I just started my business and it's all about the downloads. I did get the aweber autoresponder but still don't fully understand how to use it - that's the project for this weekend to review the tutorials.

The program that I purchased to get me started working in PLR is one that suggested DL Guard but that is outside my budget right now. I asked the person I purchased from and was told that once PayPal sends notification then I zip the files and send it in an email so the link is not on my site and no one can just download and display anywhere. Makes sense but I know there had to be other options.

Does it mean that I have to re-do the buy now buttons and everything? (Darn it - just finally figured those out!) If you store your product on E-junkie do you have access to continue adding to it? I plan to add PLR Packs consistently so the amount of what is stored is going to continue to rise.

      OK, a few remarks.

Autoresponders are not really related to the product download issues. (Although you can use them...)

It depends on the size of your product but sending a few GB sized product via email is a not a wise business decision. People might be on slow connection, their inbox might be limited... and altogether it's annoying. I'd kick asses if somebody send the product via email...

Re: adding new and new stuff to the same product. Again, not a wise business decision. Imagine I am your first buyer and after a couple of months I learn that the present buyers are getting twice as much as I did - for the same price. I'd feel cheated and would ask refund immediately!

Put an optin form on your download page (see aweber) and tell the buyers to sign up to get your future updates/addons. That's a good incentive to sign up and everybody will get whatever you add later. That's what I'd do. Actually, I am doing it

        oops...

I was trying to respond...sorry. Ok - as for the download - that is in reference to a finished product and zipping it and sending the zip via email because if I load the zip on my site then anyone can download - hence the need for DL Guard or similar.

As for the adding content... it would be another product so that is another item that needs to be downloaded if purchased. I would not make changes to something that I've already completed.

I think I will check out the E-Junkie to store those items as I currently store the content on my own computer instead of my site. Sorry for the confusion.

      Hello everybody!
I am a newcomer to the warrior forum, and have registered to find answers to some specific techhie questions, which this thread is about. What bothers me about the solutions I've read is, yes, there is an expiration date on the download. But what's to prevent the one buyer from publishing the download URL on a forum, where literally thousands of people could see it and download the product in a few hours? Maybe I'm not clear on exactly how this process works, do the buyers, once they've paid through PayPal, are directed to a page that has no visible URL? And if that one person downloads the product, what's to prevent them from emailing it to everyone they know -in the subject-specific forums?
Thanks for any insight anyone may be able to offer. This is a great website and forum service...

With DLGuard you can limit the number of downloads before the link dies. So that's easily solved. But you absolutely CAN'T stop people from sharing your stuff via other electronic means (dropbox, FTP, email, etc).

Just deal with it. That's the unfortunate reality. If you worry about this you'll never do anything. I'm serious.

hi, i have same situation as TS but everyone can download the book and it needs a unique code to open. the problem is that the codes are unique and are just given to me as a commission, so what i'm selling are the codes. I might have 5 codes per week that I want to sell for just $5, is there any way that I can automatically send them a unique code after a paypal payment? remember that codes are not unlimited and the paypal payment should say if i'm out of codes automatically.

Thanks for the bump of this thread, great suggestions. I'm starting a website now and I had this concern of how to deliver the items and have a secure page where people can't just happen upon it. It was on my list to look up.

I know Dennis has a product he recently posted about to help secure the page & I was looking at that as well. But these options are great.

I know some people use media fire as well.

I use Ebizac to handle all the admin in my business. It allows me to integrate the autoresponders, product delivery, affiliate program management, etc. Most cost effective solution I have found.

However, if you simply want to create a Pay Pal button that will handle this, try Paylock Pro. It's easy, and it will encrypt your payment link. Unfortunately, some will look at your code and bypass the payment link and go straight to the download page. To my knowledge PayPal has never fixed that.

PM me, and I'll be happy to give you a copy. This software has been around for a very long time, but it works, so it's worth having.

Here's the easiest way to get started if you are TOTALLY NEW at this:

(And no, you do not need a PayPal account to buy something when a vendor offers PayPal checkout. PayPal accepts credit cards)

    1) Setup your PayPal button using their online tools, configure the button such that the customer is sent to a download page after purchase is complete. Something like YourDomain.com/Thank-You-5421.html

    2) Make a thank you page using the same name as above, and put the links on that page for the customer to download. Google "no-index" to learn how to make sure Google does not index your "secret" page

    THAT IS IT.

This is a short term solution. When you actually have customers buying your stuff and want a better solution then consider eJunkie, DLGuard, or any other number of GOOD solutions.

What I described to you is a crap solution that works to get you started. DO NOT LET THIS CRAP GET IN THE WAY OF ACTION.

That's not how I understood Lynne's post. I took it that she meant simply including the email opt in on the same page where you provide the download link as a way to send future updates to your customers. Anyway, no point arguing semantics, this has been a really helpful thread for me.

Yeah, not sure exactly what she meant, because at one point she said:

So once they opt in as a Customer that then takes them to the download page for their purchase.
    But earlier she had said:

What I tend to do is instead of my thank you page being just the download page (which has a link to the product they purchased, that you have loaded to your server).
Anyway, doesn't matter, I was pointing out that this model exists but isn't very ethical in my opinion, but as has been discussed many times on other threads, there are LOTS of WSOs doing this...

    Hi ron!

Customer must wait for delivery which decreases satisfaction. Time consuming to manually send each copy of the ebook, which ultimately decreases your efficiency.

Ive never had any payments or downloads on my websites before just affiliate stuff so this is new to me.

I will also be using aweber if that matters at all but will probly have opt in page somewhere but wont be tied in to the purchase. Or should it be somehow?

    Thanks for the help.
I've done a little research on it and came up with Ejunkie, Delivermyfile and Digiresults.

While Ejunkies basic account is only 5 bucks with a free trial I believe set at 7 days, and has the ability for you to setup affiliate programs of your own. It didn't make the cut, because you only get to host 50mbs with the basic account and if you have a video it will most like be over 50mbs.

Next, there was Digiresults, ability to setup your own affiliate programs - yes, can host up to 20mbs for each upload, downside you have to pay them a percentage of earnings per transaction.

Last was Delivermyfie, affiliate ability - no, however, you can upload as much as you want and pay only for actual files downloaded, check there site for more info, there is also a 5 dollar coupon on warrior forum, I don't know if that's still god but try it.

In the end I chose to go with delivermyfile and digiresults as they both can work together, at least until the money starts flowing in. If you are looking to deliver files 2mb or under and you're using aweber you may want to see what they have on their site as they do have programs on the system that can hook aweber to payal.

One last think I saw someone mention DL guard, but I did notice that not many stress security. I see many products that people work hard to put together floating around on the net, and if you aren't experienced you would just assume that they are freebies most times. Often these people have linked to authors sites who weren't experienced enough to put some type of security in place.

So, if you are going to allow downloads directly from your site I suggest that you get some type of protection for that. Profits Theme, Digital Access Pass are a couple of the programs that I have come across that work with wordpress that can do this.
