Is Christmas affecting sales?

I don't know if you are experiencing this but I have a slow-down for many of my sites.

In fact, one of my profitable sites is not making sales since 19 December and to date, still no sales.

All my sites are not Christmas items and are mainly Internet Marketing stuff. All my sites have no change in the visitors, the only change is the drop in sales.

I wonder if Christmas has a hand in the drop in sales.

I was thinking, perhaps during this recession times, people's wallet are tighter now and if they have to make a choice, they will rather buy Christmas gifts and to pay for my stuff.

What do you think?

In the past 10 days our income from ghostwriting has hit an all time high. It seems that some people are spending more on services getting ready for 2009.

  Thats what I am doing, I have a new product but will wait till Jan before releasing it. I am just using the time now to tweak it and add more features.

I have observed that the premium priced products I have are getting a lot of sales and the low ticket lead generators are down.

I'm also having a bit slow-down here in Mini Site Design business. Usually monday-tuesday is the most crowded day, got plenty of orders during those days. but not since last week.

Perhaps people are saving up for Christmas.. at least that's what I do

As far as physical products are concerned, there is definitely a lull just before Christmas since it would not be possible to have the items delivered before then. This is followed by a burst in the new year as people who have received money as presents spend it.

My websites that sell real products are still doing well. One of them sells pet products and sales are actually increasing at this time of year (Christmas presents for pets?) However, my blogs that focus on information products are not selling much at all. The visitors are still coming and asking lots of questions. I think they are looking for free information really.

Joseph, same here. Traffic has been high but conversions are at its all-time low. Even for my products which are gift-related.

My only guess is they are saving up. Let's hope that it will pick up on Christmas eve.

Looks like some of you have similar results as I have.

Just when I thought I want to make extra cash for Christmas, I got the reverse.

December is always the slowest time of the year. I am not surprised that it is as slow as it is for some people here including myslef. As soon as January comes, things will pick up again.

  It makes sense that higher priced items would sell more now because people are looking for quality and the best use of their money. They research what's there and choose the better one, whereas before they probably just bought up lower-priced items without really investigating.
  
  If your site offers free information as well as products, it's likely people are still visiting for the free stuff. This would explain the continuous traffic and no sales.
  
  The type of product you're selling also makes a difference. Some things sell better at this time of year. People who want to look good, for instance, will be looking for things they can do to start their new year off right. So if you're offering fitness equipment, that should sell now because many new year's resolutions involve getting fit or losing weight.
  
  So consider your offer and see whether it fits the season, keeping new year's resolutions in mind.
  
  My sales haven't changed in the past 6 months, except for a few sporadic sales now and then. In the end, the sales are the same or a little lower than they were about 6-8 months ago.

This seems to be the effect of recession more than the holiday. People want to be careful about their spending. Moreover, it depends on what what people want to buy...being the holiday season.

as a whole december is one of the best times of the year to make money online and is also one of the months where people spend the most money online

did you see the mall parking lots this month? packed. they are spending just as much online

personally I wish every month was december when it comes to making money online

Is christmas affecting sales? you bet, they are through the roof! No kidding.

we just had cyber monday, green monday, and some of the biggest online shopping days of the entire year. If you aren't making money right now you aren't paying attention imho.

Similar situation as the OP. Traffic is constant, but conversions are way way down on my internet marketing site. Will wait until January before deciding if any action needs to be taken.

I suspect its product dependant. I have wedding photography sites which always show a downturn at this time. Nobody wants to learn wedding photography at Christmas!

  It is mostly depends on the products.
  
  Gift items, houshold items, online coupon products, clothes etc sales goes up while things that can wait like information products, hosting, scripts etc will be static for a while. This always happen to me in december.

Yea I'm seeing similar results. I'm not sure if it is december or the recession but I've seen a slight decrease in traffic but mostly a decrease in unique clicks/hops. And fewer sales. I've actually had less time to work on my projects because of the holidays too so that could be a factor.

Hopefully we'll see a pick up in january!

I think you'll see figures and trends all over the map. I have clients whose sales are up (IM niche) and others who are flat or down slightly. In general the last 2 weeks of Dec sales-wise can also be weather related.

In Chicago we have just had 2 days of blizzard like conditions. Other areas have too. If you need to buy gifts are you going to brave the weather or buy online?
I think the market is too diverse to point to one cause for soft OR strong sales.

Right after it things started to slow way down.

My traffic for my sales page increase surprisingly
but sales did dip a little...

for the past few days, there were more signs of sales
going to normal....hope it stays that way.

  I've taken the last week off and only came back to work today, but on checking my sales stats I find my sales have been pretty consistent throughout Christmas week (and no lower than usual). This is on average across a range of niches though - some products sales have dipped a little, but sales of others rose.

Well, according to the state of our economy and the Christmas season, people can be draw to or away from what you are promoting.

Because some people are in panic mode due to the economy, they may want to get their hands on something that would make them money; some kind of security. Others may invest in things that are of great value, durable goods.

People that are Christmas minded will naturally focus on Christmas things no matter how small, but if they are your loyal visitors, they will return after the holidays.

I believe that things will pick up for you after the holidays.

I too had a massive drop in sales - quite literally none for 3 days from one of my best sites but as you Chris said - no drop in visitors

I had my best week yet, the week before christmas. on the 1. day of christmas it was back to basics. We are talking 3 times what I usually make.

My promotions are not christmas related and not something you give people in gift (its ebooks).

I think there is an overall malaise in the marketplace...I think the recession and economic slowdown has been more damaging than a lot of people think.

Doesn't mean business stops though...I think we all as marketers and entrepreneurs have to just hunker down and become more analytical and effective, in the way we bring our messages to the marketplace.

I admit I was in that same situation where I was wondering, where are my referrals?? I have been marketing every single day around middle of december and not responses. I was so frustrated until I found out the reason why. Most people were just getting ready for the holidays and will soon be over when New Years Day ends lol.
