Possible domain name scam

Hi All
Complete newbie here. I've tried searching so sorry if this has already been done.
I did the 30 day challenge recently and managed to get to no 6 so fired up I have tried a few more sites. After many (many many) hours of keyword research I came up with a url to try with clickbank which had everything I was looking for.
I found a cheap domain name provider and bought another name I had been looking at and paid for 4 years. this went through O.K. The providers site was a bit rough but I could find my way around it and wasn't interested in hosting so I thought I would be ok. I am shown as the owner on a whois so was happy. Yesterday I went to them again and tried to register the main name I had researched. Everything seemed to go through ok, paid by paypal -accepted ok.
10 minutes later I got an email saying that that had trouble with their registrar and it would be three hours before it could be registered. This morning (I'm in the UK) about 14 hours later, The providers site is down and as I did a whois check the domain name was registered before my eyes. To an obviously fake name in China. Checked my paypal payments and the money was paid to a completely different name from the first time(which had been the company name). When I google the second name He is obviously a Turkish I.M. Am I being paranoid or do you think this is a scam to cherry pick domain names that others have spent time researching.

I think the lesson to be learned here Kabb is never to buy any domains from a cheap site that looks a bit rough. I'm not sure what's happened but it doesn't look legit, personally I would only use a decent company to do this with so can't really comment on what's happened.

I know you're a newbie so don't think I'm being rude in any way at all. However this is a business and you're better off paying that tiny bit extra for a reputable company.

Well done for doing the Challenge though, it's something I recommend all newbies to start off with and jolly well done for getting to #6 during it.

This happens all the time, so you're not being paranoid. The lesson here is not to research domain names through a registrar unless you are ready to buy them right then and there. Many people have made this mistake and discovered that the great domain they put off buying for a day or so had been registered when they came back.

Thanks richard, no I dont think you are being rude, if I was any freener I'd be martian.

Hi Gail, I did my research with Google keywords and Market samurai. It was when I went to buy the domain name that was still unregistered that they OK'd it and took the money. Then someone else registered it 12 hours later.

If they took the cash and OK'd it then someone else managed to get it 12 hours later, I'd say it was a scam and the firm you used didn't even register it at all.

It definately smells bad either way.

I've never had any money stolen from me like that, but I've had domain names stolen away from me when I didn't register them right away. If you come across a good domain name at a registrar, you unfortunately have to make the decision to buy immediately or it will be snatched away from you.

I hate to say it but why would you try to use anyone other than Namecheap or Godaddy?

They have coupons all over the net and are both reasonably priced.

Namecheap is awesome for free Who is but Godaddy takes much better care of you if you need customer support.

I hope it all turns out ok for you!

      Cheers,

That's incorrect. You can check it and think about it. I'm doing it

If anything, one shouldn't necessarily assume an available domain name will
remain that way if not taken on the spot. No one can guarantee that, just
as your neighborhood bookstore can't guarantee the last copy of that long
sought-after novel will still be there while you run to the ATM.

To kabb: it sounds like your problem's resolved then?

Some registrars will show false positives on names - basically showing them as available when they've already been registered. It's usually not intentional - simply that they may use cache when checking for domain availability. Some registrars are really bad though...either they have a poor interface to check certain extensions or something, but they come up with false positives all the time.

A few years ago, I nearly died when a registrar with a bulk extension checker showed Domain.co.uk available. Obviously it WASN'T but I hurriedly registered it only to get a refund a day later.

Man ... why do people keep trying to save a stinking buck and do business with anything but a top notch registrar? It isn't worth it. It really isn't. Use only the big name registrars when registering domains. Godaddy, Namecheap, Fabulous, Moniker.

You should communicate this to Paypal immediately and they should have the means to reverse the payment you made and to close these #*!@%+# down--at least from using Paypal again.

It would be worth the effort to try and time is of the essence at this point.

    Good luck!

I got on to paypal right away and raised a ticket. couple of hours later the provider site came online. about an hour after that my blog started working. I managed to change some but not all of the registration details - like i said the site is a bit rough. I raised a ticket (the only contact I had) asking wtf and they replied that it is set up but if I dont remove the dispute they will delete the name. Lesson learned! I might close the dispute and see if I can transfer it while I have access to it. thanks for the replies

If they took your money and the domain name, you have been scammed!

A while back, I learned that a registrar has the right to freeze a name for up to three days. If a customer finds a name and does not purchase it, the registrar can freeze it, raise the price, or buy it for themselves.

One registrar I now avoid using would locate a domain name, but if I didn't register it immediately, the price was raised to $50 and the name is not available from another registrar.

I seem to remember a place that offered a list of 'unregistered but searched' domain names. You could get a list of domain names that were checked that day but not registered.

Some of this actually makes sense, if you think about it. After all, do you want someone using your computer and bandwidth to find a product they intend to buy from your competitor?

I now have the domain name pointing to my site. Still having trouble changing the registration details but as I can change some of it I am hoping that it is just the providers lousy software and I will be able to get it sorted one way or another. I really don't want anyone looking my site up and finding it registered to Ken Kamikaze in Hong Kong.
Thanks warriors, There's a lot to learn for us newbies (Sob) but I hope I'll get there if I don't go broke or mad first. I looked for a cheap site because my UK provider charges over 30$ for a .co and I am looking to buy a few. I will definitely stick to the recommended providers in future. the savings in time far outweigh the cheap names.

I'm sorry that you are having these problems and hope that you don't lose the $2500. The UK provider that I've used for 11 years and can highly recommend is 123-reg.co.uk They have had an offer on .co for a while and currently selling at £9.99 which is less than $30, but the offer ends in 6 days.

It's crap that there are pi*****ks around happy to scam others. I went for the cheapest options initially, as many of us do until we learn better. Sometimes the cheapest options work out fine as 123-reg worked out good for me and they were the cheapest for quite a while.

Edit: just seen you got it back, really pleased they didn't get it.

GoDaddy has such a crap website, but it is still legit and still reputable. I loathe their website. Slow, disorganized, too many upsells on the registration and I am sick and tired of Danicka and her clones.

Kevin, sorry to hear that, but I really don't see a reason to mention the nationality of that person.

It wouldn't be nice if I said something like "I was conned by an American".

All countries have good and bad people. But when you write such a sentence, people who have no idea about that country, might think that all of them are bad.

It wouldn't matter if you had been conned by one though, would it?

I just think if he'd mentioned it as being an Englishman, I wouldn't have thought anything of it.

I agree, all countries have good and bad, however, anyone that had no idea about Turkey and thought, as a reult of what kevin said, that all Turks were bad, isn't really worth the time of day.

Anyway Nail, you're Turkish and a nice chap. So I wouldn't worry about it.

Your best bet is to just stick with GoDaddy and buy your domains through them. They're very trusted and have an awesome support system in place that will answer any of your questions..if you don't want to spend the full $11-$12 for a domain you can search GoDaddy Coupon Codes in google and he blogspot link that comes up #2 in Google has the codes listed. Use the 2nd from the top coupon code so you can get your next domain for $7.49

It's also better to learn from your mistakes now that you're a newbie rather than have something really great and profitable going for you, and then BAM..game over you know? You live and you learn, but hey you found the Warrior Forum so you'll definitely be in good hands from now on. Hi Nail
I aplogise unreservedly. I love Turkey. I have a second home there. The people I meet are the most hospitable in the world. I think I probably mentioned the nationality just because it was in my head as interesting at the time and no offence was meant. I get used to using nationality when I am over there because people always ask. If anyone has got a bad impression from this then please don't.

Update - yesterday I received 5 notfications from paypal that I had made payments to the registrar these people use. 2500$ in total. I have disputed this with paypal and the payments are frozen. I had a debit card and a credit card registered with them and when one was empty it bounced to the next one. luckily they had not been processed but my bank account now only has a few pounds available balance in it until this is sorted out and my subscriptions payments are going to struggle. I might have to buy a "become a millionaire in 5 minutes" course. I said I might go mad or broke, but I didn't expect both and so soon.

Stick to a well known provider when buying domain names there are many sites that will sell you part ownership to a name or simply just scam you.

I spoke to paypal it was them who said it could take 10 days to resolve. The money now shows in my paypal account but as it has not actually gone from my own accounts, but is frozen, I cant honestly withdraw it but am still unable to use my frozen bank account, so the full position at the moment is: My bank account is frozen apart from a few pounds. My other credit card has a large transfer which has been approved by the cc co but not yet been taken by paypal. I now have 2500$ technically available in my paypal account. I think I'm 2500$ up at the moment but cant spend any money!

I was trying to get it back - I must be too good at it Now I've just got to duplicate it hundreds of times.
I had already paid for the domain names. the 2500 was split into 6 different amounts none of which had a description.
