Help! Problem with Wordpress Blog

11 replies
Hello

A link has appeared on my Wordpress blog that I did not put there - it is to a gambling site. Even though I delete it in the list of links, it just comes straight back.

Does this mean the site has been hacked and is there any way of getting rid of it?

Many thanks, Ali

    Is it possible that you can post a link to the blog and the offending link. Perhaps someone here can have a look at the source code and tell you exactly what it is that needs to be removed.

    That said, there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to remove the link via the Admin area and changing the login name and password as suggested by Raymond could well be a good idea.

    Cheers,

    Hello

    In the admin area I can see the link under my links section but when I delete it and go back in it is still there. I just can;t delete it so that it doesn't come back. Is there any otherway I can do it?

    Please see the link below in the right hand column under Blogsroll - the casino one

    Midnight Software Mart

    Thanks, Ali

    Ali, do you have a pop up on your blog? I just clicked on the link in your post above, and my browser showed a blocked pop up.

    I figure if you didn't put a pop up there (because last time I was on your blog I didn't see one), then it is indeed someone hacking into your site.

    Hi There Ali

    I've just been to look at your blog & source code, and it looks like a hacker has got in and modified some of your source files from withing your admin section. What I suggest is going to the section that allows you to edit the .css files and the like and find all references to the offending site (femalegamblers), delete them and change your admin password.

    If that fails, depending on how much you've modified your theme, you could try installing a fresh version of your theme over your blog which *may* help.

    Hope this helps

    Dave

    esr, No, I don't have a pop-up!!

    Dave, Thanks I'll go and have a look now but I'm not hugely technical so I'm not sure if it will work.

    I've changed my password - is that enough or do I have to change the user name as well?

    Thanks, Ali

    Try looking into examining and modifying your html from the wp control panel,but be sure to keep a copy of the original source saved before you continue.

    Ive looked through the css files - and it may just be me, but I can't see any reference to the spammer website.

    I'm really stuck now beacuse the header I have I had to modify the theme for and I'm now sure I can remember how to do it? If I reinstall the theme I will lose that won't I?

    Are there any other options?

    First of all you should have a secured blog so this stuff does not happen..

    * Check your theme pages, and see if the link was also hard-coded in your theme sidebar.php file.

    HTML Code:
     <ul class='xoxo blogroll'>
    <li><a href="http://www.femalegamblers.org/fr/">Casino en Ligne</a></li>

    	</ul>
    * Remove the blogroll 100% then edit and re-activate if you wish to use it.

    Seems like some of your files have been hacked, I can help you out, just PM me your blog's detail.

    PS. Checkout James' WordpressSecured as I've heard many positive about it and it will prevent somewhat going on with your blog.
