How Do I Make Money As a Writer?

I am thinking of venturing into article writing business big time and would love to know the procedures to earning big. Your various contributions are very important.

Majority of the freelancing sites i know do not pay more than $1.50 per article, meaning if you want to make $1000 monthly you would need to write about 666 articles every month, that is about 34 articles daily which isn't feasible.

If the goal is $1,000+ per month you may want to start structuring your service. If you are confident your services are high quality you are going to have to set yourself apart from those that will do the job at cheaper rates.

For example you could create packages which promise to give a certain amount of articles at set prices. Often consumers will buy in bulk so that they purchase less so seeing a 5 article package compared to paying a set amount per article may be crucial.

Also be sure to ask your clients for referrals, testimonials, and feed back. If you are building a site to promote your business the testimonials will increase your credibility, while referrals will keep business flowing. Although there will only be so much you can handle until you need to expand and possibly bring other writers into the business to handle the workload.

Make sure you have a TOS (Terms of Service) this lets customers know what you can and can't do in whatever amount of time you set. This will broaden deadline times dramatically giving you breathing room as well as keeping clients you can't help away.

fiverr.com is a pretty good idea. To make even more money quicker and easier you can hire some writers that offers the same services as you do. They will do the job for you... you will be the boss instead. So, you charge them 5 bucks for each article on the subject of your choice. Choose a good writer with good reputation on fiverr... and bingo! $$$.

A great deal is going to depend on the quality of your writing. If you're good, you shouldn't be settling for a few dollars per article. If you are just starting, you could start with a low introductory rate and plan to increase it when you've received some positive feedback from clients.

I started with a post in the Warriors For Hire section. If you can afford it ($20), it's a great place to start. I started there doing articles for $5, increased it to $10 within a week and now I don't even advertise there anymore because I have regular clients that pay no less than $50 an article. I still offer proofreading and editing services here because I love doing that type of work. Ironically, that service has evolved in to project management work!

My point....just start somewhere and see where that leads you.

If you'd like me to take a look at your writing to give you more specific feedback, I'd be happy to do it for free to help you get started.

    Good Luck!

Try TextBroker...you submit an article and they grade you and set your writing level between 1-5. The higher you're rated-the more they pay you per article. Level 4 makes over $6 per article. Level 5 makes $7-$8.

If you are a good at writing, you perhaps should consider writing offline. Many of my writing sources are through Writers' Market. You can buy it online at Amazon or most of the major book resellers. Many of the magazines referenced pay substantially more than anything online that I am aware of, although writing standards may be a hurdle.

I would highly recommend that firesale above. A firesale is basically when someone sells a bunch of their past products in a package for much cheaper. It is well worth the money since you are getting hundreds of dollars worth of her products for fairly cheap. I am an experienced writer and found the information very useful.

Textbroker is a great place to start. If you rank a 3 star you will be making one cent per word for 3 star job. 4 stars get paid even better. There are always hundreds to thousands of available writing jobs there. I still write there between clients to meet my daily goal.

Go into copywriting instead of article writing!

You can use article writing to get started and get some funds, but if you want to make big money as a writer, learn copywriting.

STEP 1. Sign up to Constant-Content.Com...

STEP 2. Study the posted public requests there and do 5 to 10 of those high paying content writing gigs ==>> Most Constant-Content.Com content buyers are willing to spend $50 for a 1000++-word unique, high quality article/product review/report...

STEP 3. Constant-Content.Com allows you to post part of your material for the buyers to see it, so I'd do that then contact the buyers via the website and point them to the materials I completed: Tadah! I now have a set of sample materials to show other potential clients...

STEP 4. I'd go to Web forums about Internet marketing, SEO/SEM, backlink building, article marketing, affiliate marketing, etc.

STEP 5. I'd register with those Web forums, update my profile page details, i.e. Photos/Images and the URL of my profile page in Constant-Content.com...

STEP 6. I'd build my reputation as a friendly, niche-expert resource of beneficial content in those Web forums. How? I'd show them my content writing expertise by contributing useful content in the form of info, advice, techniques, strategies and tips in discussion threads related to content writing/development, ebook writing or digital info product development, SEO/SEM and other Internet marketing-related topics...

STEP 7. I'd advertise my services in the marketplaces of those Web forums, pointing a link to my profile page in Constant-Content.Com so potential clients can see my previous work...

STEP 8. I'd continue completing the public requests of Constant-Content.Com buyers, pointing those buyers to my completed work, contributing beneficial content in those Web forums and advertising my content writing services there...

STEP 9. I'd spend the money I earned on a domain and hosting plus my free time to install an excellent looking Wordpress theme and useful plugins, among other things, such as writing content for my website and updating my profile page links on those Web forums, as well as dedicating a page on my website to show my previous Constant-Content.Com work and newly written content samples...

STEP 10. I'd then develop training materials for writing content, use the money I earned in Facebook advertising to get other writers interested in earning money online to go through my free training materials and online coaching sessions and become a part of my content writing team, with me as the marketing strategist, Q/A editor and project manager so I'd have a cut from their earnings...

STEP 11. I'd ramp up what I do in step 8 above to get more clients who need more content, because I can accommodate more orders since I have a team of trained writers in my group, and also develop more content for my website, especially the sales pages of my service offers, including an easy ordering system and secure payment options as well as convenient service guarantees...

STEP 12. I'd train one of "my" best writers to become the Q/A editor, the marketing strategist and the project manager, then hire them for those posts...

I'd then do marketing work on those Web forums, contact corporations that need content writing services to offer the services of "my" group and do step 10 above whenever it's necessary to grow my "group". I'd register my business, get an office and hire inhouse staff, including administrative personnel, then grow my business by contacting potential subcontractors, more so the best writers who have been working in "my" group for the longest and convince them to find qualified people, train them and hire them as their own employees, at a time I have more than enough long term contracts from my corporate clients...

Oh wait: That's what I exactly did when I was just 25, as detailed by this thread, to now have a $200K-asset, $10K++/monthly-net-profit company, with my eyes closed, since I've been totally blind for more than 7 years now, and if I can do it with my eyes closed, then what could you do with your eyes wide open, provided you set your mind to it? My guess is:

    Pretty much anything...

It won't be easy, yes. It's simple, yes. It's hard work, yes. And, quoting Jon Morrow: "At some point, I guarantee you'll want to quit. I guarantee people will treat you like you're insane. I guarantee you'll cry yourself to sleep, wondering if you made a horrible mistake... But never stop believing in yourself. The world is full of naysayers, all of them eager to shout you down at the slightest indication you might transcend mediocrity, but the greatest sin you can commit is to yourself become one of them. Our job isn't to join that group, but to silence it, to accomplish things so great and unimaginable that its members are too awed to speak"...
Hope this helps. Best of luck...

If you can make into Constant Content, then it is a good way to make some money selling articles.

However, there are other methods as well. You can sell your article writing services but don't expect people to want to pay too much

You can also use Web 2.0 properties such as Hubpages, Squidoo etc. to write articles and earn money through their on-site advertising and affiliate programs.

If you are writing 500 word articles as a level 3 writer on Textbroker you will need to write around 7 articles a day, which is fairly easy. You will make more money at constant content but there you are posting up articles that people can buy later. My process is to spend one day writing for constant content and then writing for Textbroker between clients. If you can manage independent clients you could make more than Textbroker.

Constant Content you write articles and put them up for people to buy. If they are in popular niches I see them sell usually in 2-3 days.

Textbroker there is a list of jobs, you take one and do it, and you get paid. You don't have to bid or wait to hear if you get it.

    1. Find out what your clients are doing with your articles.

    2. Stop selling your articles and do that with them yourself.

Seriously, people are paying for articles because they make more than they pay.

So as an article writer for these people, you know that what they're doing makes more money than what you're doing, and that articles are the part they can't do themselves.

You can do that part. Find out what the other parts are.

    My basic roadmap:

    - Get article gigs and build a reputation
    - Raise your prices until it represents a desirable wage for you
    - Your remaining clients are making more than that, find out how

In my own case, my clients were selling their own products, which as it turned out I was writing for them. The writing went to an editor who formatted it into a "pretty" product, an artist was hired to produce box shots and graphics, a copywriter did the sales page, and then the whole thing was thrown into a WSO or put on Clickbank.

So guess what I do now?

It's a hard market because there are so many people on DP and WF who will write for next to nothing. If you really want to be a writer, I would probably suggest you contact magazines or even a newspaper, because writing online is only well paid if you put in ridiculous hours and write a ridiculous amount of words. It sounds cool, "freelance writer", but it's not the laid back lifestyle you might think, unless you really work your way to the top.

I just launched the site in my signature as I've been writing for some time but never get to set my own prices due to sites like Fiverr taking a cut etc.

Consider setting up your own site. Literally, it took me 2 hours to build it - just get something hooked up to paypal, and promote your site to contacts. That's what I intend to do anyway.

    John,

If you find a niche, something you are passionate about and write about that everyday and post that to the article directories then have in your resource box a link to a lead capture page then you can sell affiliate programs in your niche to those people by email (autoresponder).

It will take some time. You have to think long term and look at the numbers. 2 articles per day posted to 5 article directories is 300 articles with your lead capture page out there per month that doesn't go away, so the next month you have 600 etc.

You can also get a article submitter that will submit your article to 300 different article directories.

Get a word press blog and post your article on your blog.

Then, go where the money is...

Stop thinking content farms, freelance bidding sites, starving webmasters and the like. Go to the people who have deep pockets, or even better and easier - go to the companies who have clients with deep pockets.

What kind of company offers an article marketing service? Usually as part of a general promotional package? What kind of companies offer that type of service?

Answer that question, and that's who you should approach. They have clients who are willing to pay a lot, and they regularly take on freelance writers. Position yourself as an expert, offer your writing services at $20 to $30 for a basic 400 word article and take it from there.

OK, you will probably have to send out several hundred queries in order to get a handful of replies, but then it simply becomes a numbers game; the more queries you send out, the more replies (high paying writing work) you will get. It shouldn't take more than two or three hours of work to get your first writing job at $20 to $30 an article.

I would advise having a website first and maybe five or six good quality samples made up as a PDF file to send out when requested. Think quality, quality quality all the time. Never cut corners in this respect. It's your reputation that on the line. Reputations take time to build up, but they can crumble in an instant if you do something wrong or something silly. Think quality and impeccable service always.

That's basically what I did about 18 months ago. I now charge $35 an article, and I've even been paid as much as $144 an article. I'm not saying this to brag - just saying it can be done, and it's a lot easier to do than you might think too. And I once slaved over 500 word articles for $5, so I most certainly do know what that feels like. Never again!

Majority of the freelancing sites i know do not pay more than $1.50 per article, meaning if you want to make $1000 monthly you would need to write about 666 articles every month, that is about 34 articles daily which isn't feasible.
    Hello John,

While you can make a good living as a writer I would suggest that it has limits you cannot get past until you change your business model. If you are thinking of writing and selling what you write then you will hit a glass ceiling.

You've already begun to imagine this as shown with your examples above. Might I suggest a different path? You've evidently realized the value of good content, well I would suggest that you will make far more money selling writing to companies than you ever could writing and selling.

Basically I'm suggesting you consider leveraging the skills of other writers and putting together a team. Not interested in a team then simply use existing contract resources and create a virtual agency.

There are absolutely loads of businesses out there right now crying out for writers to help them create their social media content, I know, I serve that market. And while I write I also have many other writers working with me too.

It makes a big difference in the end result. One approach is a "time for money" type job, the other is a scalable business that will make you money while you do other things.

Just my 2 cents worth. And yes I am biased towards the approach whereby you sell your services but have others do the work
