Hello,

I was thinking of entering into website designing business. I have great knowledge of PHP/HTML/CSS. I have plenty of designs with me.

But I really don't know how can I earn my knowledge. Your various thoughts are really very helpful.

Craigslist is definitely a good place to start if you're a US developer.

When I used to do web design I got most of my local contacts/clients from CL. These days, I don't bother because I have more local clients than I can handle.

Anyway, send me a PM. I'm always looking for some help to outsource work.

If you can design a complete website and you're creative I'm sure you can easily sell templates. You can charge a very high amount for a custom unique design once you're popular enough.

  • Check out sites like Elance, and you could also post in the Warriors For Hire section, too.

you could create a killer wp plugin or wp theme if you know how to do that.

sell designs on theme forest if they are good enough.

Visit the following freelancer websites and create your user profile.
    1. Elance.com
    2. Freelancer.com
    3. vWorker.com
    4. oDesk.com

After creating your profile, you should upload your portfolio so your clients can see your work quality.
each freelancer website has 2 options for creating your profile, first for employer type (who want to hire worker for their work) and second for worker (who want to sell their services, so called freelancer).

When you have your account created, search for your related projects, read the projects descriptions carefully and start bidding. At the beginning its very hard to find some work because there are very senior and trusted freelance worker who are working for years, they had completed 100s of jobs and got clients review/feedback and ratings and they would be your competitor but dont be disappointed and dishearted. Every freelancer have to face this stage. For example, I am a freelancer website designer and i am working on both vworker.com and freelancer.com, at the beginning it was very hard for me to beat my competitors but right now, i have done several jobs completed and got Excellent feedback and excellent ratings, reviews from my clients. The key is to do the work honestly and with dedication. Now i am satisfied and earning from freelancer websites. you can visit my website and read the clients feedback/reviews about my work.

Dude, I would suggest trying local business to begin with. Outsourcing sites are fiercly competitive and unless you're outsourcing the work for profit, you'll end up working your butt off for peanuts.

The best advice I can give you as a freelance web designer of 10 years is USE PROPER DOCUMENTATION. That is, proper contracts, proposals, work orders, invoices etc. Doing the actual web design makes up about 25% of whats involved with running the actual business.

If you're interested, take a look at my web design business kit in my signature.
