Keeping tabs on Competitors?

Does anyone know a good method besides a basic google search for finding out how many competitors you might have out there? I just want to get a feel for how many other sites are trying to do/already offering the same things that I am doing. I've been doing various google searches which have worked all right, but I want to check if anyone knows of a better method?

    Use traffictravis to check the ranking of your keywords and see if your competitors SERP is getting higher. The total number of backlinks that is increasing is also important. In order to out rank your competitors, build backlinks constantly until they are far behind you.

    SEMRush and SpyFu are great tools. I also use compete.com regularly.

    This is a great question. I also have been simply searching Google to see what shows up for my certain keywords. Usually I take my top 10 keywords and manually search them in Google, then I'll track the top 10 competitors for each keyword. Then I'll take the 5 that show up the most often in the 10 keywords. I look at those as my top 5 competitors. From there I will use sites like opensiteexplorer.com to compare my site to my competitors.

    Thanks for the info! MandLoys I use compete.com a bunch too but I really don't know how reliable it is. A lot of the time it doesn't even have analytics for the site I'm looking for, and back when I had an analytics program that I paid for, it gave me some very different data than what compete what giving me.

    I think for finding them google might be your best bet. For checking the competitions sites opensiteexplorer, yahoo site explorer and semrush are good

    As far as keeping tabs goes I just stick to google searches as my main source. Though sometimes I can find out the occasional tidbit by keeping my eye on sites like adsense or TechCrunch that post the occasional story about up and coming businesses.
