Use the Google Adwords tools. That's usually a pretty good indicator of how much advertisers are spending.

On the other hand, I'm a tried and true advocate of "if you don't know anything about a topic, why setup a site about it just because it has a high CPC value".

In my humble opinion, it's much more important to stick to niches you have experience with and work them rather than putting up some fluff search engine spam site about a topic you know nothing.

Type in the niche keyword in Google and see how many ads are running for adwords. General rule of thumb for me: 3-4 ads means there is money to be made in this niche.

Although there are some exceptions to be made once in a while. Use good judgement.

Have you tried the free trial of market samauri? It's a great tool and you can use it free for 7 days I think. It will automate many of the tasks to determine if building a website to earn money from adsense will be profitable or not.

Also, assuming you will be trying to get free organic traffic, be sure to analyze your competition on the first page, if you can't beat them you may be wasting your time.

Another way is to go to amazon or clickbank and check and see if there's any products selling for the niche you are considering. Niches with no products are generally non-profitable, unless you so happen to have identified a market that no one has ever thought of, but that is quite rare.

I'm a bit lazy. Just visit dummies.com. All the heavy lifting in market research for the hottest niches has been done. If it's not listed there, it's not lucrative.

I actually learned about that from Yanik Silver many, many years ago, but I've never told anyone else. Now you've let the cat out of the bag.

Jay Abraham told Yanik and a whole bunch of other people. Very few actually do it.
