Domain Name Debate / Question. Have Your Say

I'm in need of a bit of help choosing a domain name and I seem to have the same problems pretty much every time I buy domains.

my main keyword is 2words long

www . keywordkeyword . com (taken along with all variants)

www. keyword-keyword . com (taken, .me .mobi .tv are only ones available, not sure of the value of these)

So the option I'm left with is putting a generic word before or after ie.

www . onlinekeywordkeyword . com

or

www . keywordkeywordonline . com

Does anyone have a take on this, which is best for rankings generic word before of after your keywords. Also does anyone have any good ideas for generic words to use. It is in the jewelry niche if that helps.

Thanks in advance.

Put your keywords at the beginning of the domain name. This is vital. Get a short domain, the shorter the better. Also you can get the free version of WebCeo to understand more about this stuff.

domain name keywords might be overrated, nevertheless i always use 'em.
Hint.... "keywordWEB.com" <--- surprisingly many available and it fits many keywords and its only 3 letters more.

    I'm not buying it.
Having your keyword in your domain is a help but not essential.

Personally I think too much emphasis is placed on having your keywords in the TLD of the domain.
I've had too much personal experience with my own sites to convice me that its not necessary. Nice to have but not necessary.

Lets face it, a lot of really good names, phrases, keywords are already used up. Then people start to panic because they are being told they have to have their keyword in their domain name

I would rather find a good .com name then to find a .net, .tv, .org etc that has my keyword in it.

You want something that is easy for people to remember (if you are building a real site).
If you really must have your keywords in the domain, try looking for a generic type TLD and then use subdomains for your keywords.

For example your TLD could be jewelryreviews.com (if its available - or something like that) and then use the subdomain "mykeyword".jewelryreviews.com
    That works.

I've done that lots of times (using subdomains) with good results.

Its nice to get your keyword in before the .com as opposed to being in a folder which is llike jewelryreviews.com/"mykeyword"

Once again its not critical. There are so many other areas that you should focus on that will get you good ranking.

Lets put it this way. If you had a site called diamondring dot com (just an example) but your pages weren't optimized for diamond ring and your title tags and backlinks, etc didn't include "diamond ring" then you wouldn't rank for the keyword "diamond ring"
But you WILL rank for "diamond ring" if your page, titles, images, backlinks etc are all optimized for that keyword even if your web site is called joesfancyjewelry dot com (notice diamond ring isn't in the TLD)

    Just my opinion

I got a few generic names to go after keywords.

    hut
    zone
    hub
    source
    club
    live
    web
    site
    world
    today

Not sure to use one of these added to mykeyphrase or just get the keyphrase.us

hell I may as well just get both...

I would not recommend using .tv, .mobi, or any country code domain extension unless your site specifically targets a geo location (.us for example) or if it's video or mobile related for the first two. Same goes for .org, I wouldn't get one of those unless my site was, well, an organization. Well known ones are wordpress.org and wikipedia.org.

It would probably be easier to help if we knew what your keywords were, but I understand the need to keep it quiet. In any case, I would stick to .com as much as possible.

    Here's what I'd do...

Get the .org for starters...before someone else does.

Then buy a variation of the .com with one of the 'filler' words suggested above.

Host both sites at different web-hosts (i.e. with different IP addresses).

Feed content and SEO juice to both sites equally. [EDIT: Feed different content to each site, but in equal measure]

See where you rank after a month, and re-evaluate.
