  • Hey, that's what happens when two business giants collide, and I am sure something similar will happen again!
  • They finally found some competition that wont back down.

    • More a reflection of Google's apparent philosophy that intellectual property exists for Google to steal.

  • Love you Google, Paypal sucks...

  • Sucks for paypal.
  • I guess that's one guy who probably should have received a raise prior to being lured away. Pay them what they're worth. Hah

    • It's going to be interesting to see how much dirty laundry will be aired in public, given the fact that the burden will be on Paypal to provide proof that Osama provided trade secrets and sensitive information to Google as an employee.

Yeah ... I saw that article. Sounds like Paypal is a little worried about Google's new thing.

    • Paypal should give back first all the money stolen to customers before worry of Google.

  • Dunt dunt dunt.....another one bites the dust.

Google's plan for world domination and complete control over the internet is moving along nicely with the acquisition of this new employee.

  • Google's actions are becoming more and more dubious with each day, first they wanted to buy groupon , when rejected they started google offer, now they stole paypal idea's , if we sit back and look at what google has achieved realistically , it is google search that has worked all other google products have failed to make any sort of impact... so if some alternate search engine with equally good quality results comes up google could be toast...
  • If "the executive in charge of the negotiations for PayPal was Osama Bedier", then how in the world does he get to take the technology with him? He's not the owner; he's just a negotiator.

Surely Paypal is smart enough to have ranking employee's sign non-compete agreements, anyway, I would think. Maybe Google thinks the technology is valuable enough to make it worth paying the money?

If Paypal didn't bother to get all the copyrights and trademarks before beginning negotiations with anyone, though, then it's their own fault, anyway.

    • Employee non-compete agreements are illegal and not enforceable in California.

Let me expand on that as it can affect some Warriors. The topic is one of my specialties.

Unlike other states, non-compete agreements are not enforceable in California. Really doesn't matter where they were signed. Once the employee sets foot in California the Golden State protects employees per law and a public policy of wanting employers to be able to hire the best talent.

As one judge said in a case I had in San Francisco, a valid out-of-state non-compete, and even an injunction order from a court in that other state enforcing the non-compete nationwide, stop at the California border.

The effect is Silicon Valley can raid talent from all over the world. Elsewhere, employees may be stuck because of a non-compete.

While an employee is free to leave eBay (PayPal) for Google, that does not mean they can take and use confidential or trade secret information. It is not a copyright or trademark issue as mentioned in a prior post.

One of the difficult and interesting issues that arise in cases like this is proving trade secrets were taken. It means eBay has to divulge their private information. It means Google has to divulge their information.

In another case I had there was a court order that extremely sensitive information from the parties could only be divulged to the opposing attorneys. We could not let our clients know about it. Made life very interesting. Another reason why these cases often quickly settle.

  • Google > PayPal
  • I see what google is trying to do with all their work. I don't blame them. But it is really scary that with the power google has, they are slowly trying to be a one stop shop for all things internet.

They basically already have a monopoly on search traffic. He who controls the traffic makes the rules. I'm not one to rejoice at anothers failures, but any competition to google on any front is good in my opinion.
  • Well...

Some of you guys it's OK to start negotiations with a company to achieve goal X, negotiate with them for 2 years, and all of a sudden, drop negotiations, BUY OFF the guy doing all the negotiations (the one guy that obviously has ALL the inside info) and start your own version of the deal.

Quite revealing. Bet this is going to be an amusing thread.
  • I actually read an article about this months ago on Business Weekly. BW was comparing the abilities of these two companies and whom was be better placed to succeed in this market. Google has control of nice chunk of the platform that the digital wallet would be based on, Paypal simply has no shot. Google can push this technology through their Droids and have it come standard on these phones, giving them a massive advantage.

And as far as stealing the idea, Apple was talking about creating an app that would accomplish this task for the iPhone about 10 months ago, this is not a new idea by any means. Granted, Google may have been a bit shady in the way they received information, but unfortunately it seems like that's the American corporate climate now... :\

  • I'm with Google. We need a reformed, better
    solution for mobile payments.

  • Actually I think both companies are evil anymore. Wish I didn't need to use either!
  • it's always healthy to have a competition perhaps this will teach Paypal some much needed lesson...that they are not invincible!

    • It is not healthy to have intellectual property aquired by larger companies by simply waving a cheque book in the face of key employees, no matter the companies involved.

  • LMAO......I recall getting nasty threats from PayPal's lawyers about my show exposing their little skim scam.....whereby they freeze accounts.....arbitrarily in many cases...hold the money for 180 days.....earn interest on same....and even when you are exonerated of any wrong doing....you get nothing back but what they stole.

Think Pay Pal doesn't make "interest" off frozen accounts?

I've done enough research to know it's "big business" for them.

FYI.....told the Pay Pal lawyer to FU......did the show anyway.....crushed the ratings...they got especially testy when I asked if they 'paid taxes on the interest earned...and if they returned the money in full....it seems only fair they return it with interest."

Millions in frozen accounts....some rightfully so....many many not. And believe me....they aint stuffin the cash under a mattress.......they earn interest.

I had $6800 frozen for "excessive activity" aka I sold too much in a week. Went through hoops of fire...sent them 10 pages of enough info they probably could create a new identity and how ironic the same day the pull their stunt...EBAY.....SENDS ME A POWER SELLER CERTIFICATE SUITABLE FOR FRAMING. PERFECT FEEDBACK. AND WHAT A JOKE.

181 days later....I got my 6800 back .......not an apology...not a dime of interest. And that might end up being a real problem for pay pal down the road.....at least that's the word on the street.

Karma is a bitch......and if I could I'd take a flame thrower to Pay Pal cuz they owe me interest for 6 months of freezing my money......and oh yeah...the tos at the time stated that if you threatened legal action against PayPal you automatically lost your account.

No joke. And I rather enjoyed the threats from their lawyers...cuz obviously they were bluffing.......and I'd trust a crack head before I'd trust those *******s with my money.

They have done a lot of stealing.....on their own.

lol. Don't hold back. Tell us how you really feel.

I agree with one of the above. I have no sympathy for either company. I'd like to see both of them implode.

  • They'd have much greater potential for success and outreach with a company JV than a 1-person deal. "It takes a village.." or tech team... and all that.

    Just my personal thoughts...
  • Everything's fair in love and war? Isn't it Google?
  • well thats sound interesting
  • If Google really did steal these ideas from PayPal then yes that is wrong. But if PayPal can't take a bloody nose in the world of business then they should leave the playing field. PayPal has dominated the online payment world for way too long and they do not play fair either. Remember, we're talking about a company who has the power to lock customer funds at will for often vague reasons and they routinely do just that. Honest and hard working people and businesses have literally been destroyed financially by PayPal and their not-so-above-board tactics many times.

So don't feel sorry for them. I for one hope that Google or perhaps someone else completely prevents PayPal from doing substantial business in the mobile payment market. Karma for their past bad deeds.

While I certainly don't advocate stealing someone else's ideas, consider this: If Compaq hadn't reverse engineered the IBM PC Bios, and if Microsoft hadn't swiped GUI ideas from Apple, then personal computers wouldn't exist as we know them today. Instead, computers would likely be far more expensive and only available from two companies who between them would have a strangle hold on the consumer.
  • paypal should give it a rest .they should keep their house in order rather than chase google
  • That is bad news. If it is true, then some one is responsible and they should pay. I think that if a person does wrong then they will get what they deserve.

    Thanks
    Christina
  • it will be good if paypal has a worthy competitor
