Buying/selling signature Space in forums

OK, I know that people do this and I know many forum frown upon buying/selling signature space. But really, what's wrong with it as long as people are not posting only for the sake of the signature space? If they are, sooner or later, they are going to be caught and shown the door anyway. It's just real estate that can provide traffic. brand marketing and search rankings. So why is is that controversial?

Anyway, I was planning on buying some signature space from people at forums related to my clients' niches. Have any of you done that? Have you had any success with that approach?

    But the 'real estate' doesn't belong to you so it's not yours to sell.

    Here on the WF the signature file is a gift from Allen and it would be an abuse of his hospitality to sell, rent or barter it.

    Well, in that case, the forums can easily have a service where they moderate these kinds of sales. I, as a buyer can contact the forum to ask for signature space ads and they can provide their "best" posters with the opportunity to sell their signature space. How about that? The forum owners can actually keep a percent of the revenue from it.

    There is a demand for it and there is a willingness from many to sell their spaces, and opportunity for forum owners to make revenue from it, I am just surprised that it's not more prevalent already. If the whole process is moderated where forum owners only allow truly useful members to add links to their signatures, then everyone could benefit from this.

    Has anyone done this? I would really appreciate you sharring your experience with me on this.
