Do you mean something like Groupon?
Like finding local small business to partner with your deals site?

Sorry, yes precisely like Groupon, Livingsocial, etc.

To be precise, I'm looking to market to consumers / buyers - I'm sure local businesses in need of clients will be easy enough to find.

Would like more information in order to provide some helpful advice

I see there are lots of "groupon" type scripts available - here is an example for wordpress - http://groupbuyingsite.com

If I was setting up a groupon site I would either concentrate on a locality and then target local businesses

I and 2 other partners are planing start this business now.
We hope this is our new income stream.
We are in the info gathering phase.

2 market that we need to find: partners (small businesses) & buyers(consumers)

Finding partners is the issue because they have to be approached face to face to close the deal.
Find buyers is more easy but costly via PPC or facebook.

When you find scripts, please get the script provider that have prompt reply and support and can help update features in future.

    Investment to this project can be very costly;

Anyway, I need more information on how to find partners via the internet. Does any one achieve finding partners in internet?

Thanks, I'm looking into software in another thread.

Here I just wanna learn how to attract consumers (buyers). Groupon's 50-million email list is gonna be a bitch to compete with.

It really depends on who you are trying to reach. Housewives? Look to all those "Mom" forums and see if you can cut a deal with admin to run some banner ads (like you now see at the top of WF). College students? You'll probably have more success going offline and getting your website address into their hands using cheap giveaway gimmicks (mousepads, pens, etc., imprinted with your logo and web address.)

Grab a booth at any large gathering of people (fairs, festivals, concerts, sporting events, etc.) and give everyone who approaches something free that has your website address on it.

Send a press release to every newspaper, TV and radio station within a 50 mile radius and see if you can get some free press coverage. Considering the state of the economy, most of these will have at least some interest in giving you some coverage and providing their base with a way to save a few bucks.

Since it sounds like you are trying to develop a "local" groupon type site, all these ideas will get you some traffic for starters. Then you parlay that traffic by trading more freebies for some "refer-a-friend" traffic, and do the same with any new referrals you get from that traffic.

You won't end up with a million subscribers overnight, but you could build a local list up to 10-20k fairly quickly, and if you are sending them relevant offers with true savings, your business customers will be repeat buyers and you end up doing very well financially.

Thanks for your advice. How about if I try to buy someone's list or something like that? I have money to invest and really need a good kickstart of that sort, but I don't know where to buy a list - all I know of is those opt-in email marketing companies where you pay $300 or whatever to email 4-5 million people.

the first mistake is that you use a groupon clone. the keyes for marketing is diferentiation and innovation. So with hudreds of site trying to look like groupon you are just going to looose time and money like all the rest.

New things are out... try orangedeals software a deal site software that doesnot look like groupon and has a new innovative business model more fair for businesses and coupon buyers.

    free and open source

    have a look at tecorange.com

    tecorange.com/index.php/download-free-open-source-software/77-orangedeals-deal-site-software-free-open-source-php-mysql

Find out your target audience by using ''google insight'' and try to post on group deal forums as much you can. Be relevant. websites like groupon and Redflagdeals have there on site forums.
