Another wordpress question

Hello everyone,

I have never had this problem before, but I am working with a different company for this url than I usually use. The domain is registered with godaddy, but I am hosting it on justhost.

I have changed the name of the dns servers in godaddy to point to just host. Added the domain on to my hosting account, and did a wordpress installation and added my chosen theme.

The problem is when I try to edit/look at the site, sometimes it loads and sometimes it doesn't. Even when I am flicking back and forth in the wp-admin page. Also doesn't seem to be picking up images I have uploaded to the /images folder for the site.

Is this because I haven't given enough time for all the servers for both companies to update, or is it a problem with godaddy? Maybe they don't like you hosting content with other companies.

Whatever it is. It's annoying. I just want to get cracking building the site, but it's making it impossible!

  • The site sometimes loading sounds like a plugin problem. Try disabling them temporarily and see if that fixes the problem. If it does, you'll have to turn them back on one at a time to see which one(s) is/are affecting it. Sometimes 2 plugins will conflict with each other, as well.

    For the image problem:

    /images: chmod to 777

If it's loading even sometimes, then Godaddy has done their part. The problem is somewhere on your end.

[EDIT] I just thought of a few things I should add:

If you can't get into your dashboard to deactivate your plugins, use your cPanel, instead. Change the name of the 'plugins' folder to 'plugins2' or something, then create a new, empty folder called plugins. See if your site will load then.

Also, I forgot that some people do things differently than I. Another way to chmod: Using cPanel, right-click on the 'images' folder, click on 'Change Permissions'. Make sure all the boxes are ticked (this sets it to '777'), save, and then check to see if the image problem is fixed on your site.

Agree with Bradley. Usually it has something to do with the plugin.

Try deactivating the one that you think might be the problem. It is usually the one with the most load that is causing the problem.

It's quite possibly just that the DNS servers haven't pointed yet. A plugin wouldn't cause issues when navigating through WP admin. I'd give it a day and then see if you still have the same issues.

couldn't be the plugins there were only 2 that are uploaded akismit and hello dolly. Both were deactivated at the time this was happening.

The reason I think it might be godaddy is I use this basic checklist when doing all my sites. I have never had a problem with any other site. This is the first godaddy domain that I am using.

  • I've been using Godaddy domains for years and have never had a problem. As I said, if the site is loading even sometimes at Justhost, then the nameservers have already resolved. Otherwise, you would be getting a 'Parked' page from Godaddy still.

It doesn't sound like a Godaddy or Justhost problem, though. As I said before, this is on your end somewhere.

Sounds to me like some sort of database connection problem, although I can't think of what it would be to keep making it go in and out like that. Usually, it either works or it doesn't.

Akismet and Hello Dolly are definitely not your problems, though, you're right about that.

Quick questions: Is this a brand new blog, on a brand new install of Wordpress? Or is this an already made blog you exported, and then imported into an upgraded, fresh version of Wordpress?

BTW, did you get your images working?

It is a new wp isntall. The images are working fine; however it seems to be that the images problem lies in whatever the problem is with the page. You can see for yourself that sometimes it loads and sometimes it doesn't The Joy Bug | Handmade Jewellery This is so strange.

It takes ages to load... sometimes with broken images, other times just a blank.

Does it work when you switch back to the default theme?

hmmm works absolutely fine with the defult theme. Not to sure how I feel about that. I have paid money to use these themes, I will contact the company and see what they say.

Well, just a brief look at the site tells me you MUST have defined images in those "hanging frames" on the main index, where you see the missing image icon. Trying to see the image location it says: no image defined.

Maybe you have to populate that theme with products+images in order to work properly. Just a guess...

It seems as if it is looking, looking, looking for images to display - and then finds nothing

Have you changed the file permissions for the "cache" folder within the eStore theme (as per the readme instructions?)- this should allow the images to show.

oh sorry folks for the miscommunication. There are no images in the little frames yet. The theme takes those from the images on posts and I haven't made any yet.

2 major problems that I see - #1, the page, including images, comes in at 460K in size. That's ENORMOUS. It takes 173 HTTP requests to build the page. That's RIDICULOUS!

The #2 problem is that more than a few of the images are generated on-the-fly by timthumb.php when they should be cached after the first load.

Bottom line is your eStore theme is what's causing the problem, as evidenced by your site loading ok with the default theme.

    Get your money back.

that is 460k and I don't even have anything on it yet! sheesh. I have asked on the support forum from the company I got the themes from.

I put the theme back on and it seemed to be working okay, and now it's doing the same thing again.

      Anna,

On my computer, it loads every other time I click refresh. On the other hand, my connection is somewhat flaky at the moment... so it's hard to determine how much of the problem is your website. Do please let us know when your figure out why it's happening.
