Why do so many people think there is a difference between an online and offline business? It's 2011.

This is all. If you have an offline business, and aren't utilizing the power of the web, then you are doing something wrong.

They are both simply marketing methods. You are leaving a lot of money on the table by ignoring either one.

Not necessarily. I have friends that make great money and have thriving businesses that are not online at all. If you don't need it, you don't need it. That said, most should make use of it as it's a vehicle for growth, diversification, learning, etc.

I've done both. The difference, for me, is online meets my values and habits/lifestyle more than offline businesses. I explained it in detail here - How to Start and Build a Business (and actually make money): Be Yourself In Business. Be Successful At What You Love.

I can go back to offline and do often take offline clients but for a very limited time in order to keep my lifestyle/habits.

I have no agenda but to help those in the same situation. This I feel will pay the bills.

In this day and age, I would advise thinking them as one, not separate from each other. If you keep them apart, you might be stifling yourself. I do most business online but I have a consulting business offline and I teach music as well as play music. If the internet goes down, I can still work.

Technology is bridging offline with online.
QR codes bring offline business online, location based social media brings mobile and social to local businesses. While there may still have different ways of doing business, I do see them merging, fusing. I won't separate them but go with where they are and bring them to where they can make $ - so I can make the $ too :-)

I think people pay less in offline business.
Additionaly, we cant convince rich countries customers to buy things from a website of poor countries.
    what do u think?

i think in general offline is more stable. More long term sustaianable. IMHO the Net is fast paced what works today is obsalete tomorrow. One good month doesn't mean next month wil lbe a sgood (ok it might be a lot better as well) but it's definitely much more up and down.

Offline is generally higher costs more red tape, time consuming etc...

Online: More fraud, changes faster, you have less rights when big companies like Ebay/Paypal/Google decide to slap you etc. Can be a lot more frustrating as you do not have complete control.

Hmmm....no doubt some business do not need a web presence and frankly if i could do without it I wouldn't bother either.

I just had a guy come around and cut some trees for me. Took him 20 mins. Chrged me £60 what's that $100....I'l lbet he dos at least 10 jobs a day...

NOW online see what you have to offer to try and prise $100 for 20 mins work out of a client.....

It amazes me how people seem to have 2 different mind sets online and offline. Offline they easily hand over $200 for a pair of jeans but when they go online all of a sudden that $50 consultation fee is a lot of money and they want a money back guarantee if it doesn't work out... Weird.

A combination of both online and offline marketing probably would generate more success.
