I have always had the stance that you should pick a niche that you have first hand experience in.

    Nothing has change that belief.

TRUE...its basically just like selling any other product...you have to have sufficient knowledge about it, may even have passion for it

I'll second that. I don't bother with online niche research tools.... I interact with real people and make notes of the things I get asked about over and over and over again. Then find a way to sell a guide or refer to a company that will pay a perpetual commission.

I will agree that a niche you either are passionate about, or have expertise in is very helpful. It really pays off when you can write interesting content on a regular basis. I do think you need to do some serious market analysis prior to picking ANY product or service to promote. Lack of interested buyers or excessive competition will likely kill your efforts. You must research these items!

Google Keywords Exact Match. 1000-3000 searches a month for a higher ticket buyers item.

I was eager to launch my first site and didn't spend enough time on researching my niche or keyword analysis. In hindsight, all that effort in getting this site up and running was not that profitable. I did learn a lot about the process but my bank account was not happy. Now, I spend a lot more time on the front end research.

Honestly I do very little research when choosing a niche. I look at my interests, and the interest of others, such as hobbies. Also I go to transparent marketplaces such as amazon and ebay and look at what is selling.

I used to use MNF when I focused more on small niche sites. But with bigger sites, I just go to the Google keyword tool to see if there are enough exact match searches, check Google itself to be sure there are ads running for the keyword, and then go to Spyfu to see how many advertisers have recently run ads and what the pay out range is since I often monetize with Adsense. If I am putting an Amazon product on my site, I usually choose from the Bestsellers list. I figure if they are bestsellers on Amazon, then people must be buying them, so I'd write an article using the appropriate keyword. Hope this makes some sense.

Current news websites are a good place to look. (ie: MSN.com, USAToday.com.) Many of these sites have a 'Trending' or 'Popular' section. Examine this list to see if anything in the list can be monitized.
