My Experience With a Week of Backlinking...

I took four of my blog/sites and suspended adding any new content or changing anything on them two weeks ago. Only one of them was old enough to have an identity of it's on, the others were brand new and built with feeds from other sites.

After one week of inactivity I started bookmarking my sites. I chose some well known sites and several others that I had found through research. I bookmarked each site and several others for a friend so far to 30 popular bookmark sites and almost 40 of the 'unknown' ones.

The site that already had some juice maintained it's ranking for 7 of the 10 keywords that I searched (keywords that had been used to find me in google) and improved it's position in the main three.

KW1 went from 12th to 6th, KW2 from 6th to 2nd, and KW3 from 47th to 35th...and strangely enough, the main keyword that the blog is designed to eventually rank for went from off the charts (not included in the top 100) to 12th!

Does social bookmarking work? You be the judge!

    Well,

I was an engineer in my former life, I'm all about statistics and that's what counts when you don't have a clear path to follow. It ain't like google tells you what works!

    Too many Steve's in here!..

Fullman, I seriously think that that the 40 secret bookmark sites might actually be worth something...I'm not quite ready to reveal them just yet.

However, if you have a site you would like me to test, PM me and we'll see what happens...perhaps you could give a testimonial?

I social bookmark my blog posts to 35+ after i get through posting and pinging it. My blog ranked better just about every day I did it. So I know for sure it works as well.

I've been personally bookmarking my sites manually and adding in some sites for two other warriors, one that paid me to and another that I'm doing as a pay back. I haven't asked for their results, but I'm seeing some excellent results.

There are so many sites out there, I've been trying to find the best ones rather than take the ones that are offered by the popular services...time will tell!

      Steve,
That sounds like an interesting test. I have a site that I have been building up the content on, but I haven't done to much in the last month or so. I really haven't done a ton of promoting either.

I would be interested to seeing how it affects my site. Sounds like a cool test. You got my curisoity up, I'm totally interested in see the results.

Out of curiosity how much would you charge to do the bookmarking with the well known and your unknown social sites?

I would be willing to do a testimonial as well.

I have to agree, it is all about the statistics, they don't lie and can tell a much different story than theory.

Thanks for the information... Good Stuff...

You don't bookmark the site - you bookmark the individual articles.

If you have your blog on Wordpress on your own site, you can get a plugin that gives each article its own URL - so instead of www.site.com/archive/p6 or whatever, it will say www.site.com/articletitle. I think it's the all-in-one-seo-pack. This helps to get your articles listed in Google.

Thanks! I've seen this concept before... where webmasters bookmark the article and not there own sites. I'm not sure why you wouldn't bookmark a site that goes to a squeeze page. Please elaborate on why bookmarketing the article is better than bookmarking the site!

I don't bookmark the same site more than once to any site shkad14.

Stangracer, I hadn't even thought about a price for this as it's hard work and very boring. There are people in the WSO's that will bookmark you to the popular sites for far less than I would be willing to do it for.

I suspect that they do a lot of it automatically and don't pay much attention to whether the site is appropriate for your purposes. I'm not one that promises something I can't deliver so let me think about it.

My point is that I researched dozens and dozens of sites and that my results were what I documented. I'm not a wizard or anything, just showing my results.

      Steve,
That's cool. I can bookmark to the popular social sites. Maybe just bookmark your 40 unknown sites? Or even a portion of them. It's not a problem, think about it.

You just got me thinking and since I have a site that I have been building for several months and haven't done much promotion I thought it would be a cool to test. I would like to compare to your numbers.

I'm going to look at doing the popular sites now. If my numbers go good, I'll post them on this thread for everyone interested.

Thanks for getting me off my butt and getting to work.

You either need others to pick up on your bookmark and make it viral or else you need to recognize what a one time bookmark is...a link.

Social bookmarking is just links back to your site unless someone else finds it interesting and adds their own. A one time link is a good thing, we can do more but that is beyond the scope of what we are talking here.

I have never seen it mentioned but has anyone asked their list to bookmark your site ? Perhaps an incentive or something for motivation. However this might result in too many bookmarks ?

I've seen that many times and it works great.

Not so much to their list, but you can tweet about it and ask your followers to digg it, stumble it etc.

So when you post a blog post, tweet it, post a video, tweet it, even forum posts with interesting content.

      Just some more ideas.

Finally a testimonial to reveal how great social bookmarking is, don't know why people saying social bookmarking is dead.

There are thousands social bookmark sites that I found but don't know if some of them will last more than a year.

For a note, some of my clients prefer to bookmark their articles, lenses, or press releases instead of their sites directly.
They feel it's "safer" which is a good point if you suddenly went berserk and bookmark them to hundreds of social bookmarking sites at once LOL.
This is good to increase the authority of the articles etc. which have backlinks to your sites.

Might be because Reddit is a HUGE site that carries a Page Rank of 8. Quite often, High Page Rank sites are also very well traveled.

    Steve,

Thanks for posting this. Are you saying you only link one page per your domains or have you tested more than one page?

Also I noticed nice traffic from reddit but don't remember now what I used in the dropdown menu- they have a choice of reddit.com but also different categories. What is best?

Just a quick update, keyword 1 above has now moved from 6th to 4th and KW3 from 35th to 20th!

And some quick replies...oortcloud, the top bloggers often ask their readers to mark their posts, I don't know about asking a list.

Debbie, I was only marking the URL of the blog/site in this experiment, although I often have used digg, stumble, and some of the others for posts and pages in the past.

I knew social bookmarking worked, I use it to get all my sites indexed within a day or so. But I never knew it would help that much with SERPs. I guess I'll have to start using it more.

One other thing that would be interesting to test is to bookmark a couple sites linking to one of your main sites. That ought to get the link-juice building and might help even more than bookmarking the main site itself.

    Great job Steve.

The key is keeping your position in the SEs. I find that you can get a quick jump in ranking with bookmarking, but if you're not adding regular content to your blog, eventually you lose your position.

This obviously was not meant to be my only tactic for generating SERP's and traffic, just an experiment that I could measure results from.
