True, but google has a habit of offering something free in start and then dominating and dictating their own rules. See what they aRe doing with panda update and google adwords

I must have been living under a rock I have never heard of Groupon, I am ashamed to call my self an internet marketer.

Correct me if I am wrong, but Groupon is just a site that offers daily deal from one of its partners, something significant, a huge discount that gets the masses all hot under the collar?

We have two similar sites I know about here in Australia, Cudo | Hot Daily Deals in Australia | Find the Best Deals Online and Catch Of The Day - One Deal, Everyday, Midday

Anyway Goodluck to Google, I wonder when will they do something Innovative of their own again, instead of buying up or copying everyone else?

I also think it means very little for Internet Marketers, I guess its 1 extra niche to consider when it comes to making money.

Yah, you are right, they rejected Google's offer of 6 Billions because they know its the next big thing. For those of you who do not know Groupon, it offers deals to consumers at MUCH affordable prices. In the current consumer economy, this came as a blessing for consumer and the site was a huge hit. Now they are also doing a lot of email makreting, by collecting local email addresses. Last quarter they recorded more profit that Ebay

Let's see ... he's greedy because he didn't cave to Google's offer? He started and company and grew the company and continues to grow the company. He was/is the innovator. Google, once again is just trying to keep up by copying an idea rather than innovating.

With an IPO at hand, Groupon is worth more than $6 billion.

The key to the valuation is not so much revenues as it is profits, and right now Groupon seems to be wildly profitable, supporting the salaries of thousands of sales people and other employees, and expanding across the globe. The number thrown out yesterday was 5,000 employees. Groupon's revenues are split with the local merchants who offer discounts through the service much like Google splits AdSense revenues with participating Websites. So the local merchants take at least 50 percent of the revenue off the top. What's left is still an extremely high-margin business that has managed to bridge the divide between online and local commerce in a major way for the first time.

It will be interesting to see if Google gives the businesses the contact info of the people who bought their deals. From what I understand Groupon doesn't do this, and for the crazy % that the businesses have to pay just to be accepted by Groupon they don't even get the email addresses to follow up with everyone.

Yeah, I agree

The deals are great for the consumer but often the small business loses money if they're not careful with what they offer. Groupon takes their cut, plus the vendor has to come up with the product or service cost. Vendors should be able to get emails of those who opted in on their deal.

People seem to forget that not everything Google touches turns to gold.

Google Checkout was supposed to be the PayPal killer.

Google Answers?

Google Catalog?

Google Coupons?

Google Orkut hasn't exactly made waves in the U.S. against Facebook, Twitter or even MySpace.

Time will tell what will become of Google Offers.

I don't understand why google creates all this stuff then seems to half-ass the release and promotion of each product. With their resources, they should be able to be #1 in every single niche they enter. It's truly telling that they have such poor implementation but a good thing as the google monopoly would be unbearable.

Google has really only been successful with search-related products. For example, Google maps/local does extremely well because it's something that people can use the search engine for.

Everything else they've done has only been marginally successful. The only real exception to this is gmail, but I think that was because they were offering basically unlimited space when everyone else was offering like 10mb. The other providers took too long to up their limit - by that point, gmail was already a strong brand.

  Google is trying to dominate every online field, but they seem to forget that the users don't like all their services coming from only one place.

Its a blessing for consumer under the down economic conditions. One of the key reason of success of Groupon is that it was launched and flourished during recession, and ideal time for discount shopping when people are jobless and need more for less
