Best way to email a list of 5000?

I have a list of 5000 to whom I want to send an email (haven't done one yet!).

Will a mail merge in Outlook do the trick? Or will this many emails cause issues with Outlook? I want it to look like each person is getting an individualized email for marketing purposes, and to avoid getting dumped in their spam folder.

Thoughts?

Autoresponders are set up for this!

    Try, Aweber, getresponse.....

We've had a great experience and wonderful customer service from Constant Contact. I highly recommend them.

Most emailing services allow you to customize your templates. When people sign up for your list, they enter certain pieces of information (like first name). The service will show you how to put a piece of coding into your email as you create it, and when the email sends it will use that code to pull the name (or whatever piece of info you want), into the email itself. Some people even use these things to customize titles.

You should use a list building service, like aweber or constant contact, though. If you try to do it manually, especially with a list that size, you may have trouble keeping track of unsubscribe requests, etc.

I do it using autoresponders. My preference is Aweber. Go for it - and go for it even more if you want to monetize the list over time.

If you want some help drop me a PM and I can help you to an extent.

Get a VPS and do it yourself. Never, ever , ever been a fan of Aweber and their ilk. It's cheaper and you have total control.

My business partner does the majority of her marketing through several of her lists this way and makes a very comfortable living doing so; in fact she has even financed several indie films doing so.

The OP sounds like there is already a list of people that was not generated througha double optin process. Some services may not allow the import of addresses.

If Canuckystan tries emailing from his own computer, it is a tossup that the ISP is going to allow that.

I don't personally know of one, but what might be needed is an A/R service that allows importation of existing lists.

I am not sure if things have changed, but for my martial arts school I used to use Constant Contact and I add the email addresses of new students manually when they registered; there is (or at least was not at the time) an opt-in process, but they could opt out.

well.... if you are looking for something free and totally different... try phplist.... its an old looking piece of software and might be a bit difficult to understand.... but once setup, its totally free.... and very powerful... if you have some knowledge.... you can even interface it with your custom service to build your own autoresponder service. i am currently using this to schedule mails to my clients here Subscribe to our Newsletters.

PM me for any other details.

  • Do not use outlook. How did you get 5000 people to opt in and you dont know about Aweber and Getresponse? Wow! Get signed up with one of those and start building a relationship with your subscribers before you try and sell them on one thing after another. Let them get to know who you are.

Thanks all. As the earlier poster mentioned, I have already have 5,000 email addresses in an Outlook directory. Does Aweber or VPS import addresses?

That's my problem - emailing my existing list where I haven't used any other service.

If you intend to email often then use an autoresponder.

In addition to those mentioned already, there is GetResponse (which I do not use). I was recently introduced to MailChimp. There are paid and free accounts. The free account has a limit on the number of emails that can be sent in a period.

If you did use Outlook, you would have to be careful not to exceed the limits of your ISP or the server through which you send your emails. There is something like a limit of 200 or 500 emails per hour.

As an alternative to Outlook and there have been times when I wanted to mail merge my list using Word and add an attachement in which case I have to use Mach5Mailer. The free version (which I use) limits the list size (and I cannot remember how many), otherwise you have to use the paid version.

Aweber is bar none the best autoresponding service. It's what I use and it's extremely simple especially since they provide a little assistant as your creating your campaigns and whatnot

Use a good autoresponder service like AWeber... If you send out email to so many ppl through your regular email, you'd get blocked and your email will be marked as a spammer's email address in no time!

Outlook is absolutely NOT a scalable resource that should be utilized by any professional internet marketer.

There are too many problems with Outlook to even count - the time it takes to send out mails, the time it takes to import contacts, the time it takes to set up the program properly for your own needs - the list goes on.

That is time that needs to be spent doing something beneficial for your business (article marketing, utilizing traffic generation services like traffic exchanges, building info-products).

Time is money, and the time lost using Outlook is well worth the few dollars a month for an autoresponder just starting off.

If you are going to try to make money online, it is absolutely, positively, 100% IMPERATIVE that you use an autoresponder such as GetResponse, AWeber, etc.

Using Outlook will only give you problems upon problems upon problems.

If you have any other questions about using Outlook, I'd recommend that you read a particular portion of UnMarketing by Scott Stratten. Mr. Stratten planned to use Outlook as well, and well, let's just say things didn't really go so well.
