Target Consumers With Last Names Further Back In The Alphabet

New study shows that consumers who's last names started with letters between L and Z are much more responsive to offers because as kids they always lost out on certain things because their last names are further back in the alphabet so they had to be back in line for everything and lots of times they would get the short end of the stick because of that.

Now in their adult lives they make up for that by being overly aggressive when it comes to shopping etc.

This study was just aired on CNBC and they used a free offer in exchange for email addresses as the subject for this study.

This is right up our alley and pretty interesting if the study is correct.

Cheers

    Is that so Mr Roos?

I've never heard that one before, wonder what the % diff is.

Of similar note, a Scandinavian Uni did a study of it's sports teams and found nearly everyone who played for the Uni was born between Sept and Dec.

So they looked at other Unis and found the same thing.

They then looked at professional sports people all over the world and found the same thing.

It is because people born in those months are larger and stronger than kids born in June, July, August (In an academic school year starting in Sept which is nearly everywhere I think) and so always got picked by sports masters when a school team was put together.

By the time you get to 16/17 and have caught up so to speak, most people born in summer months have no foundation of playing sport at a reasonable level consistently and so don't progress into them as adults.

It makes sense, and it makes targeting audiences even more distinct.

The study showed that people further back in the alphabet responded to the offer faster by 6 minutes. I am not sure what that means exactly or how they did it as it was just a quick segment on CNBC. I think they have a link to the study on their website.

Hmmm... there might be some truth to that.

When I was a kid growing up, going out to eat (whether it was fast food or full-service restaurant) was a rarity. Now that I'm an adult and can "do what I want!" I tend to eat out a lot. I guess I'm just making up for all those server tips I missed out on as a kid

Interesting! As someone with a surname beginning with 'S' I certainly remember being last in line. Still happens in adult life occasionally! Another potential Facebook Ad targeting option

Thats right, play with the facebook targeting option and split test it. Make sure to let me/us know about the outcome.

they always lost out on certain things because their last names are further back in the alphabet
    And what should that be?

The only thing i can remember when my last name was relevant was in school, about 9 billion years ago. I don't think that has any relevancy, could you give an example about "back in line for everything"?

The example they used was something like if there was cookies handed out they would be last in line and couldn't get the good ones or there would be none left.

My take is that there are definitely people who could be affected by this but for me personally I was never affected.

I also think that people towards the back of the alphabet don't get as many things pitched to them. When I used to sell offline with cold calling (ick!) I had a 30-35% better closing rate if I started with the Z last names instead of the A's.

I never thought about the fact that they could be over compensating for being in the back of the line. I figured they just didn't get as many calls...

My guess is it's a little of both-most of us give up on cold calling before half through with the alphabet, and maybe the alphabetically challenged (or "special"), are more open because they always have that concern about missing out.

Personally, though I'm almost at the end of the alphabet, I am usually a terrible target for cold callers, because none of the usual pressures normally work, and the more pressure they bring, the less I'm open to the offer. If they start referring to the offer as a "no-brainer", I go from offer-resistant to offer-proof, since they just insulted me in advance if my answer is no. I don't like arrogant asses, which they showed me they are, and I don't buy from people I don't like.

    Thanks Jan, really interesting theory.

Do you have a link to whoever conducted the study?

I googled for it and found an article on the study from Time online: Last-Name Effect: People with End-of-Alphabet Names Buy Faster - TIME

there is more- but here's the main paragraph:

"According to a new study, people whose surnames start with letters late in the alphabet may be the fastest to buy. What could possibly explain this weird phenomenon, which the study authors dubbed "the last-name effect"? The research didn't provide a definitive reason, but the authors offer an intriguing theory. Since America's obsession with alphabetical order often forces the Z's to the back of the line in childhood, they suffer. They were always the last to get lunch in the cafeteria — sorry, Young, the other kids bought all the chocolate milk again — and had to beg for the teacher's attention from the back of the classroom. So later in life, when the Z's — and even onetime Z's who became A's through marriage — see an item they really like for sale or are offered a deal, they jump on it, afraid that supplies won't last. The chocolate milk is finally in front of them. So they grab it."

Edit: that link they have is interesting. I pasted in the actual http:// url and linked the actual url text and it formatted itself to what it is right now. That is pretty cool!

There are many different 'Secret' tunnels into the mind of consumers if you look for them. Many little adventures like that one to work on.

Yeah, I'm sure there's a lot more to be discovered. Would be an interesting project to take on and sell the results to big marketing firms or use it in our own marketing.

I know for sure that next time I do facebook PPC I will be targeting people in the latter half of the alphabet and split test with people from the first half just to see for myself.

      Cheers
