Unless you're going to be producing studio level videos, there is no reason to invest into anything over $300.

I have a Canon HG10 with a couple of mods (external mic, wide angle lens), cost me a couple of hundred. You might even want to think about going with the used option.

IF however, you do want to produce studio quality videos. Try the Sony FX1, or Canon GL2.

I have used a few different cameras over the years.

I think the number one feature that you need is a video camera with an external jack for a mic.

The best and cheapest I have found is the Kodak Zi8. Way under $300. You should be albe to pick it up for under $150. (I found mine on sale for less than $100).

Having an external jack for a mic is essential. I have ruined a number of interview videos I've made because the speaker was not hooked up to a mic. The external noise bled into the recording...

The example you showed did not use a camera....It used video capture software like Camtasia...

    I this a spoof post???

Hey, My First Camera Was a kodak zi8 Best little Camera I had! I miss it... (It got ran over by a car, long story) but yes, A kodak zi8 is a HD camera that allows an external mic

you can easily get a remote and a mic together for under $50 as an add on, but its not necessary!

It not necessarily the quality of your camera though its the quality of your content with in your video!

You can record your screen with a screen recording program... Like Camtasia, cam studio or what ever... Make a presentation and record audio for it through a headset mic.

You don't anything higher than 720p... If your uploading to youtube then most peoples average settings are 480p, so 1280x720 is fine

Camtasia offer a free 30-day trial, so just use this period to make as many quality screencast videos as possible.

Then, when you've determined the income or traffic generated from these videos, you can make an informed decision as to whether or not the investment in the full license is worth it.

I'm part-way through my trial now and it is amazingly easy to use. I'd definitely recommend giving it a try.

  • I use camtasia all the time and have to say that it is one of the best things I have bought.

Other people use Jing and and CamStudio which I believe are free so might also be worth checking out.

Rather than buy a camera, why not invest in niche videos already done for you?

      Go check out this link.

BTW, I started with a Kodak Zi8. I also bought a desktop tripod and an external mic.

It sits on my desk collecting dust. Why? Because desktop video is the best and fastest way to build video marketing campaigns.

What is the deal with Kodak zi8?

I see it from $229 to $79 on web, are these really the same cameras? I heard that there was a recall early on, and am wondering if the $79 might be the ones they send out before they fixed the bugs.

Also, what does the zi10 have that the Zi8 doesn't? Did a little googling, but didn't find any excellent reviews. If someone has one would appreciate the link.

I like the Kodak Zi10 - great resolution, easy to use and has a microphone input so I can wear a wireless lapel mic and eliminate background and wind noise.

  • We use a Flip HD and a Flip Mino HD to do shooting for SelfAssemblySites.com - records in 720P.

You can find Flips for sale on Ebay if you can't get them new anywhere (someone bought the company and discontinued them - massive mistake, great product).

I use the Kodak ZI8 as well. my recommendation it to use some soft light at 45 degree angle in front of subject, to have a perfect white balance. Record at 720p and render as mp4 using the same software and upload to you tube super easy. Highly Recommended.

For video marketing purposes any flip type camera works great. For me, I just retired my trusty Kodak zi8 and have started using my droid x phone - and it works great! Gone are the days when you had to plunk down 500 to 1200 dollars on high end cameras for HD video.
For screen recording, just use camtasia or jing.

    What software do you use?

I've used Camtasia. Windows Movie Maker and the new Windiws Live Movie Maker.

    Any other suggestions?
