My traffic went from 700-900 daily to 120-160 why would that happen?

by ricoramiro 35 replies
Last week I was getting 700 to 900 visitors a day to my blog. I was looking forward to breaking 1,000 when all of a sudden my traffic stopped!

My blog is about 3 months old and I'm doing well on the SEO. I'm on Google's first page for my target keywords on a lot of articles.

Why would my traffic drop down so quickly? I feel as if I did something wrong but I don't know what it is.

Weird things happen with google, like this. Sometimes google will have your keywords ranked #1 one day and the next your in the 100's...just a glitch and etc. I guess (I'm not saying that's what happened to you) I don't know why this happned but maybe ride it out for another week and see how it goes.

I was thinking the same thing. Wait a few days and see what happens. But it sure hurts having a down turn like that.

The program you use to track your traffic stats should let you know where the decline is. Check with that to see if a certain traffic source is down.

You just gave me a good idea. It may have something to do with the google bot not being able to get at my pages any more. I'm going to look at that.

      Thanks!

You need to check your traffic stats....Where did you get most of your traffic from? See if that service is down. Just pray that it aint your google traffic that took a sudden plunge for if its google i think thats as bad as it could get right now.. Maybe you should rewind to the last couple of day when you were getting your usual traffic stats....take a look at what you might have done different....example did you submit your side to any cheesy traffic bot? etc..

nobody knows for sure exactly. google's algorithm is kept secret for a reason, plus it changes all the time.

you need a business model that doesn't rely on SEO imho.

I had the very same thing with 3 sites!

I'm thankful to say that now they are all back up except for one, which fell down again!

At least I know exactly why. I wasn't masking all affiliate links. Also, even one sidebar link I have with a banner affiliate link was stopping google sending me traffic.

So basically I managed to mask every single link and deleted potential links to bad neighbourhoods.

If you have masked all links and aren't linking to any bad sites, you'll be fine. Google is just working out your site I expect, so just keep building content and backlinks and you should eventually come back stronger.

As for the experience, it does hurt indeed. But it also makes you realise you should never depend on Google traffic alone.

            Hope that helps.

I thought of the affiliate links and took them down except one that is a banner ad. Maybe I'll take that one down too. Thanks!

I suggest you check your traffic sources. See if there
have some changes in them, that caused decline
    in your traffic.

Also, if most of your traffic was coming from organic
searches, I suggest you keep a track of your SERPs.

Most likely your search engine rankings for a number of keywords was substantially reduced. The same thing happened to me a few months back, and after checking, I determined that I no longer ranked well for a few of my most highly trafficked keywords. The change was overnight, likely due to a Google algo change. It lasted for about 2 months, then about 2 weeks ago, it came back almost exactly where it left off.

I'm starting to rank again but I still having gotten any Google organic traffic.

What does scraping actually mean. There is a website that has 6,800 links pointing to my blog and another one that has several hundred. I don't know and never heard of these websites.

Can that be what is hurting me?

First thing: diversify your traffic sources. Do not rely on just one method to get your traffic.
Second: keep working, don't stop and analyze for too long.

Go to a proxy - for example TexasProxy.com or PageWash.com or HideMyAss.com and then type your KW - the rankings that you see may not be the ranking that others see on Google. Plus, there is a huge difference in the number of visitors at say #1, #6 and #9. So factor that in also.

From what I understand, Google uses several different servers that don't always output the same information.

This can result in your site's page rank going up and down at times.
You'll find that you may be on page 1 for months at a time, then all of a sudden you disappear off the radar.

Who can understand the mind of Google?

If anyone can, let me know--and I'll make a fortune!

    Hi,
Nobody can understand the algorithm of Google because it can be change at any time. I would also like to suggest you that just keep in view the uniqueness in your articles. If you have unique articles and strong keywords, this issue would be just for the time being. Don`t get confuse by checking your ranking on daily basis but after every 4 or 5 days you should rely on it.

I'm sorry but THIS is the reason you run analytics. I suggest people not use Google Analytics either. I can't trust Google anymore. I much prefer Open Web Analytics (OWA) to Google now. It's free and a few hosting companies have installers for it. It's not any more or less difficult to set up.

What you're experiencing is very, very common. So common, in fact, that I've written a blog post about it on my site called The Three Month Phenomenon. It can happen for a variety of reasons...

    * using the same exact linkbuilding approach for too long and leaving a signature
    * just a random site reassessment
    * you cross some threshold in the Google algorithm that makes them "look harder"
    * Google periodically just mixes things up to re-evaluate not only you but others trying to get onto page 1

The first thing you need to do is determine if it is truly site wide or if it varies by keyword. If every keyword appears to be about 30 spots lower or 50 spots lower, that's a different situation than just a bunch of your keywords dropping but others holding ground.

SEO is an art as much as a science, so you're gonna have to do some digging. But the most important thing that you can do is realize that SEO is a long-term marketing process and not something that you should have an expectation of 90 day success in. Also keep in mind that newer sites are getting harder since the Panda update. Google really keeps pushing harder and harder towards aged, strong authority sites... so you need to strive to become one of them rather than fight them.
