Thats why I just reported one guy to real MODS.

This guy is spamming the boards for some time now and it's amazing how the heck he managed to keep pushing his in content links in so many different threads.

I mean, it's not one time, it's everytime he writes something.

We're All Moderators - Let's keep this place sane and spam free.

      I hear you.

Problem is so many of us just skip the threads and don't report these spammers.

This guy for example, he's calmingly dropping links for some time now.

I just report them. I get sick and tired of watching these folks losing time to spam when they could be working for something more profitable.

But you're right, there is a new vague of users creating new threads just to pitch their sig links:

          "Here's how I made 1K in X method"

Then a short post and one obvious siglink poiting to the method he talked about...

Or people creating threads to advertise their friends website?

I've just been reporting one guy who still thinks he's right for posting a link to the Google plusone snippet on his friends electronics site, he has it in his signature too.

I was however given the honour of being called William Shakespeare, so he clearly doesn't know how to deliver a good insult either.

Richard check my sig now, and look below the main menu. I'm gonna change it in a few minutes, but just couldn't have you thinking I was breaking rules on domains. Been my site always, I get bombarded with free membership request so often I never can say I am the owner anymore.

Props to you for keeping it civil in this post. Never hard feelings.

If you want and you can say hell no your choice.

But you got a free membership if you want. Shoot me a pm. And I only picked on you first, because you were mean.:p And Shakespeare is rubbish For real though, the offer is there if you want it.

So you know, I made the post in this thread after the thread I was referring to was deleted, so no one knew I was talking about you.

Sorry if you thought I was being mean, I'm actually far nicer than I can come across. This place needs some moderation though or it gets out of control. That's what I was doing, even if it came across to you as being mean. Again, that wasn't my intention.

Thanks for your offer, it's very kind of you. I do help a lot of people out though and if you ever do need help, you're welcome to PM me. I'll be glad to help. Just because today happened doesn't mean I've marked your cards or something, I was just making my point today.

          And Shakespeare is rubbish
He's not my preferred bedtime reading but I've definately been called worse!

Credit to you for making the peace.

Really every post and thread you write is promoting your sig link. People put the link there so members click on it

Do I make a thread JUST so people click on my sig - no

        Right.

But when a user creates threads giving free advise about Watermelons and his sigfile states he has a course on how to raise watermelons successfully... things can be confusing.

Most of the time these threads are deleted for self promotion - and I agree with that policy.

        Don't you?

This main section is a relatively "policed" place... you should see the Web Design section: everything that is against the Forum Rules is there.

Articles, self-promotion, wanted for hire, sig pimping - you name it and it's there. There are a few nice warriors trying to answer the genuine design questions but I guess everybody gets tired after a while, seeing all the garbage there.

It looks like the least monitored/moderated section of all.

      Hi Istvan

That's one more reason for moderation to be tight over there, isn't it? This guy I was talking about has a special way of doing things, everytime someone asks for one ######, he comes and drops one in content link with his keywords.

He surely is pushing the limits in a couple sections too.

Good luck with that. Most people don't read the stickies. Obvious since there's been so much spamming the forums and other violations.

I took a peek into the CPA discussions to see what was happening... if there was any useful info, and backed out ... it's a mess too. I don't know the rules there and don't have a lot of interest in those discussions, so I didn't start hitting the report button.

Yes, I agree. A good example is people asking for review copies on WSO threads. There is a stick on that section saying that it's prohibited, but still many people keep doing that. I don't think they do it because they have bad intentions, though. IMO, people just don't take the time to read the rules.

            Hi Les,

Do you know if the forum database is creaking at the seams or something? (IE overloaded)

I (and someone else) have noticed some curious things going on with post-count and recent post lists (I'm aware that my outspoken posts regularly lead to threads being deleted, it's not that .)

Also I wanted to upload a new avatar and it's refusing to let me, whether I self-host it or not (is there a new ugly filter? )

I also noticed not all of my posts are listed in "statistics" - certain periods, sometimes weeks, are simply missing. Actually, the posts were not deleted, they are just not listed in 'view more posts...'

One of the more interesting things lately is the technique of creating a thread, or hijacking one, and a single person posting a lot of comments and discussion using multiple accounts and proxies to hide the common source.

Just another thing to watch for.

As far as the sub-forums... We assume that people with a specific interest will defend their sections by reporting abuse. If you don't, it may go on for a long time. So report it. Strangely, the stuff goes away when that happens...

For those who don't know how that works: If you see a post that breaks the rules or looks like it doesn't belong, click on the little red triangle on the left side of the page, below the name of the person who made the post. Type in your comment, and submit it.

That's it. Easy, and very helpful.

                Roger,

Known problem. We're working on it. I know that one can be annoying.

Unlikely. Your reports are generally right on the money. We don't get annoyed by getting lots of valid reports from one person. Quite the reverse, in fact.

The thing that annoys us is people trying to use the reporting system for personal agendas. For example, the folks who think we exist to keep unhappy customers from commenting on their products in a WSO thread.

Yep. The current pattern is for there to be a first and last name, all lower case, with no spaces. The posts will be from people for whom English is clearly not a first language, and there will be a few links in the sig files of most respondents, with 2-3 words of anchor text. They will normally NOT quote the posts to which they're responding. 3-5 lines is the usual post length.

Report 'em. If the company allows any sort of promo code for which affiliates get paid, they're all treated as ads. That got out of line for a while, until people started paying attention and looking for the codes in non-affiliate venues.

        Yes there are 2 sorts.
The impatient bumper who, if nobody replies within half an hour,
starts bumping it back to the top with terse comments.

Then there's the type who decides his thread is going to be on
page one everyday for the next 6 months.

Can't make up my mind which one's worse Lol.

          Hello Les,

I believe there's a third kind that is even more annoying. The one that responds to every single bl**dy reply they get on their thread, saying things like..

          "Yeah thanks John"

          "glad you think the same"

          "Yes it's great isn't it"

I mean isn't that one of the reasons for the thanks buttons anyway?

I have another gripe as well.

When we have threads like one that's running now - "What's WSO", I think they should be locked or reported to be locked as soon as someone says "Warrior Special Offer".

The amount of people that keep posting what WSO stands for as though they are the first to answer drives me nuts.

            Richard,

I initially thought the same as you about that thread but it turned into something quite useful - a kind of WSO 101 lesson with some good contributions.

Can't always judge a thread by its title.

But, Serial Bumpers, not my favourite people.

              Hi Martin,

Yes you're quite right about the discussion that went on and the thread.

My little snipe was more towards people that see "What's a WSO" and then simply post a definition, despite a number of people having done so before them. I suspect to either boost post count or they were simply so eager to answer the question that they failed to notice several people already had and it felt like we had a parrot on speed in the thread.

After the first one that defined what a WSO was, there's little of any value unless they provide it. Anyone in that thread that didn't give a dictionary version on it's own of what a WSO is, created a good thread.

I wrote that purely in response to the dictionary robots.

Totally agree with you here. If I'd made a post saying thanks instead of using the button, I'd have over 100 posts to my name.

I actually think someone's going to label me a grumpy old man for my reports of wasters.

            Won't stop me though!

It would be a good feature to automatically make something invisible after x amount of reports.

    Wow.

Just discovered another one. This technique is to place links in post footers and some in content links.

People reply to his threads, and he stays there, pushing links left and right, even posting copy-paste garbage.

Seriously, what the hell is wrong with this people?

    WTF?!?!?!?

People make good money selling to the rich. But the rich got rich selling to the masses.

Black hat techniqe I read about a while back, just copy something from another forum that gets lots of responses and then paste it in a different forum. Those tactics are reserved for people who are desperate for money, the idea behind the technique is to build up enough posts to appear to be a regular member. Then post an "unbiased" review of something related with an affilliate link and cash in

It probably worked many years ago, but most forums these days are much smarter then that!

    I agree,

IMO Forums exist for two reasons:

    1. To share information and expand people's awareness
    2. To create backlinks to valuable content
