Is 10% enought to get people interested?

I have an online store. I have never offered to pay for referrals but now want to.

Is 10% enough to offer or should it be more like 15%

How do I set this up are there people or companies that can help with this?

Once I do this how do I get the word out to people we are paying for referrals?

Any suggestions or ideas are much appreciated.

Personally I'd do as high as you can afford. What kind of margins do you have?

These are great customers because you aren't wasting your own advertising dollars trying to get them and if they like your products and customer service they will buy from you again and you wouldn't have to keep shelling out that affiliate fee.

    What's better?

Spending $1,000 on an advertisement and perhaps not making a sale or
paying $1K in affiliate commissions and either take a slight loss or breakeven.

There are affiliate networks you can use or a lot of shopping carts have the ability to setup an affiliate program.

You can connect with affiliate directories and have them list you, connect with popular sites in your niche and ask them to join (perhaps giving them the additional affiliate percentage as a way to further entice and reward.) also when you find some affiliates that do well you can ask them to refer other affiliates and you could give them a bonus on the sales those affiliate make. In other words birds of a feather flock together and if you have someone that makes lots of sales for you he probably knows some other marketers that could do the same.

Reed, Can you explain how the above statement jibes with your other statements about recruiting affiliates?

If you are going to cut your affliates off after the first sale what's the point of becoming an affiliate for you. One sale per customer? I'm confused...

Separate from the previous answers... Do the math. What's the EPC? (earnings per click)

If you promise me 50% of $1000, that sounds cool. Let's assume you convert at 1/2%. That's $2.50 per visitor I send you.

        Now, let's look at 10% of a $1000 sale, but with a 3% conversion rate. That's $3.00 per visitor. The 10% wins.

Then look at the other stuff. Do you pay affiliates for later sales to the same customers? Are there bonuses for specific volume levels? Is there a continuity program involved? All of those things affect the EPC.

        Cookies.

I meant after the cookie expired (for example I think amazon does 24 hour at the moment) so if someone goes to an amazon link and then buys 2 days later the affiliate doesn't get the cut.

        Many programs are 30 days.

If the affiliate sends that visitor again during that time with his link then he'd get credit but you don't have to make an affiliate program a "lifetime" customer many are just one off. i.e. ClickBank products it's all one big site that promotes a bunch of things but you could buy clickbank products being recommended from tons of different affiliates

          Thanks Reed,

One of the reasons I was asking is one of my websites is an online store and the distributor for the products will be shutting down in 2012 and I want to convert the site to stricktly affiliates sales for other merchants products.

But I don't want to turn my traffic (small, 300-400 visitors a day) and my sizable customer list over to folks who are going to cut me off at the pass.

So I will be looking for affiliate programs that allow me to retain customer loyalty and commisions.

          Have you seen that model?

          Thanks,

Sounds like you'd want to refer them once and get paid for life correct?

Then you'd do a good search for "(name of niche) lifetime affiliate program"

Yea, we will still need to interact with a lot of our customers so I don't want to lose them, just make sure they can find the products and we still get paid.

I have to agree. That would suck if I cut out the affiliate on a repeat buyer.

Offer as much as possible in order to build a solid customer base, then scale it back. Also, you'll attract a LOT of affiliate marketers if you're offering a good commission.

What is the standard amount. Say if I go Google Affiliate program?

Seems like most are saying 10% and even 15% is not enough.

Probably better not to start an affiliate program.

    Thanks for the help!

Is the store selling physical products? I didn't see you mentioning it (or just missed...)

Usually, the commissions for physical products are way smaller than those for digital (download) products.

    yes physical products vidasupps.com

I was under the mistaken impression that 10 - 15% would be enough.

I'd suggest you take a look at other affiliate networks/sites: Amazon, Commission Junction, Linkshare... and see what others offer for physical products.

It's better to offer as much as you can afford to attract more affiliates. That way, many affiliates will promote your product which will result to more sales.
