Hosting Account Portability

I'm just now learning that "portability" in the cellular telephone number realm is light years ahead of moving a site/sites from one hosting service to another.

Have any warriors dealt with this issue before (either on shared or vps) and created a "harness" of sorts to ease the occasional port?

Thanks,
Paul

No, it's a pain and inevitably ends up with the loss of some links/SE love/traffic... regards Allen

Wouldn't it be great if was as easy as porting a cell phone number. I remember when the cell phone portability act passed, all the mobile carriers were against it because of the costs involved.

Most web hosts will happily move your sites for you. Just ask.

    Hi Paul,

Have you heard of WP twin? If you are running a Wordpress site, you can clone your website and move it to a new server in less than 40 seconds or so ...

If you're not running Wordpress then yes it is quite a pain to move sites over isn't it?

It's not hard to move a site PPPPaul, especially if you have cPanel which has a built-in transfer system. I suggest talking to your host about having them move the files, most will copy your files over and make sure it's working. We do it all the time for clients.

    Apples and oranges...

It is a big difference between assigning a phone# to a device and to move quasi-physical files from one location to another.

    Thanks all.

FYI -- after hosting for 2 years with IX on a shared platform, they quoted me $1000 to migrate my 15 web sites over to a VPS system.

    !!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's obscene Paul. If you buy a VPS with us I'll move your sites for free. I don't see how they could possibly justify charging that much.

  • moving one or a thousand sites should involve no or very little down time and no or very little problems with lost SEO etc.

you do 99% of the file transfers before you switch the DNS for your domain name(s) you do database backups and restores etc. then change the DNS and within a few hours it will all be working just like before.

same domain name, same link structure so no SEO problems etc.

anything that does change you do a simply 301 redirect and you are done.

also, as Christian offered above, almost all hosts will transfer your site(s) for free when you sign up with them.
