I had to manualy delete over a 1000 spam comments - no wonder people don't want to do blog commenting will the webmaster ever see your comment?

  Well now, I am liftin a jar a shine to all them spammers out there cause I'm one of them. Ole Thad has been known to have hisself a sandwich made from Spam ever now and again! For them what might not know, Spam stands for Spanish Ham and it is made from oinkers what come from any Spanish country like, Iceland, Jamaica or France! Really, really good stuff! It ain't as good as spalonga or spurkey but it's right up there!

Not all spam is bad...

In fact, a bowl of spam fried rice at Duke's on Waikiki is really very nice. Add a steaming cup of fresh Kona, and spend a pleasant morning watching the hot wahinis and surfers. Definitely recommended!

As for the scum that pollutes the web and fouls my Inbox...

They can take the can the spam came in, flatten it until it's all sharp corners, shine it up real pretty, and shove up their candy asses...

I'm in. I had a forum once and it kept getting hit with crazy amounts of spam. I don't mind if people make profiles or whatever, but it's ridiculous when they start trying to post on the forum about viagra

I hate spammers with every ounce of my being. I have spent so much time and energy writing code to thwart spammers from my forums and blogs, it just makes me angry to no end.

I'm especially sick of Xrumer automated spammers and if I were ever face to face with the Russian author of that software, I'd open one of these on him...

If you have your own dedicated Linux servers, you can always block ip ranges from http post, meaning they can look at your pages but not post to them., I block the entire India, China, Russia ranges and it's cut down on my sites and client sites spam by 75%. Also, with forums or blogs, proxy detection software is another way to block a huge percentage of spammers.

No it's not. The reason people do it is because links from comments work, plain and simple. Spammers are looking mostly for autoapprove blogs or people who just approve everything. Not everyone keeps a watchful eye on their blogs like us.

Honestly I don't know why people get so upset about it. I just treat it as a routine in my week where I go in and clean out the spam comments.

You turn comments off.

Do that everyday and you'll reclaim those lost 6 minutes of your life you lose each year.

Yeah, I've had enough of the bottom feeders that fill my blogs up with useless comments.

I think a lot of it is people that are new to blogging that sign up for these services not realizing how annoying they are, or maybe I just don't want to believe that people are meaning to piss me... I've managed to get my niche sites to rank first page without ever having to spam for links.

Jeremy, It doesn't have to be a person doing it to make you a Victim.

It just takes a person to create the Bot and point it in your direction
for you to become the Victim.

You have obviously never had one of your sites hacked causing you the OP's situation?

I've turned of all comments on my blog. It gets to be too much. But still some persist. The comments can still be seen in my wordpress dashboard even though commenting has been turned off. So I still have to delete them. But it does cut down on the amount of people trying. I got one recently that just made me laugh. This person commented that they had seen my article on another website (with their totally unrelated link included of course) and telling me they hoped I didn't steal it from the other website. Needless to say I didn't bother to click on the link to check it out.

You should take this thread over the SEO subforum, that's where they all hang out. :/ A large part of the SEO community has long since justified comment spamming to itself as an easy way to get mass-backlinks. The automated tools that do this pretty much allow them to spam without any contact with a 'victim' and any guilt they might have felt once has long gone - the rewards in terms of getting websites ranked are too great (yes, evidently it does work). Many a respectable SEO has sold his soul and gone over to the Dark Side...

it is a natural occurrence.

There is nothing 'natural' about automated littering of other people's property. It's not as though these bots evolved independently within the digital environment and wander around of their own accord. Those are tools used by people to abuse the resources of others.

Some of us like the idea of people being able to comment on blogs without our having to spend the absurd amount of time it can take to sort the good from the bad. If you have suggestions on ways to make that more effective, that would be helpful. The dismissive comments you so often throw into these discussions aren't.

This comment is very much like the old time email spammers who would say, "No big deal, cry baby. Just hit delete." We can see where that philosophy led.
