Starting from scratch with $100. What would you do?

Here's a question for you Warriors...
Precisely in my wallet as I type this is 3x£20 notes = £60 which equals about $100 and I was thinking...

If you today (or tomorrow for you procrastinators out there) had to start from scratch, zero, no websites, nothing, "bugger all." and all you had to invest was $100.

How would you invest that £60/$100?
#$100 #scratch #starting

Do you have any specific skills that you can offer to other internet marketers?

If not, is there any particular niche or category that you feel would make sense
    for you to promote?

Anything in mind as far as what type of online business you would like to run?

This info would help me decide where/what you should invest your money.

    Best,
    Shane

Take $40 (I think thats the price) and join the War Room. You'll have access to more information than you could absorb in a lifetime. Put the other $60 in your pocket until you've found something that makes sense to you. Good luck.

Probably the best advice you gave here.

I know there are several warriors making good money from the war room. I think as a member it was a very good investment. Still check it from time to time.

Alot of good stuff, but you have to hunt around a bit.

Yeah, joining the War Room will be very valuable and give you a lot of ideas.
You'll be able to read up and give yourself enough time to replace that $40 and get your $100 budget back up.

Ultimately you should look at the $100 as tuition, whether spent on the war room or actual tutorial material, don't expect an immediate return on your investment, those who dive right into PPC advertising can expect to spend at least that much before seeing any profit.

That's about the cost for 1 year of web site hosting, that wold demonstrate a tangible commitment to the effort, you should be able to get a service that includes 1 domain name and as importantly allows you to add more domains that you secure separately later at a cost of about $10/yr. Many include coupons for about $50 in PPC advertising.

  • With $100 dollars I would buy a domain name and hosting. Sign up for an autoresponder. Build a squeeze page. Find instant commission products to market as an affiliate. Spend soem money for a solo ad to get traffic to your squeeze page or affiliate offers. And I would probably spend some of that money to buy a product that would teach you to make money quickly so you could recoup your investment. Believe it or not $100 dollars will get you well on your way. Hope this helps you!

Use $20 to offer a service right here on the forum, and use the remaining $80 on some slick graphics for the thread and to get your own website set up. Get an autoresponder as well. When you make a sale, be sure the client is added to your list.

Offer a service in demand and you will see sales.

I would take $10 and buy Melissa Ingold's brand-new course about how to begin a money-making affiliate marketing business. (No -- that's not an affiliate link at all.) I have just purchased this and have devoured it in 2 days. It's instantly implementable. Her teaching style is wonderful! And it's perfect for brand-newbies.

I would spend about another $20 at the office supply store, getting a ream of paper and a three ring binder.

Print Melissa's course, put it in your binder, and follow it line by line, spending the money as you go. You'll be up and running for under $100.

Again, that's not an affiliate link. I just really like this product and think any newcomer could learn a lot from it.

    Hi Mal
That's exactly what my blog's about. Starting with little or no money to get started online.

Ignoring the free options for a moment, use your £60 to pay for domain name/s and hosting - Your online presence.

Almost everything else can be found for free.
Take a look, I can prove it.

Tons of information on the forum about this, I think there were 2 other threads just in the last day or so that you should go through, just search the forum...

But I would definitely sign up with aweber, research a good niche, then register a domain with namecheap, then get hosting with hostgator, and get set up with a simple squeeze page. Then focus in on driving traffic to that website so I can pitch affiliate offers to my new list.

Do not spend a DIME until you figure out what market you want to go after, what problem you are going to solve for that market and how you will monetize that.

It doesn't matter if you spend nothing or spend $20M to start a business, lack of success always comes back to how well you have chosen, understand, targeted and converted your market into profit.

The good news is that 95% of your up-front work in this area can be done with 0 investment (as long as you have an internet connection)

What's the remaining 5% you say? Basically a small investment in testing and or surveying your market to validate what you think you have found....but still your up-front work can be done for nothing.

THEN, you can go about setting up a website presence (I highly recommend you start with a keyword rich domain name, a blog to generate traffic and understanding of how you will take your growing blog readership, converting them to paying customers for whatever it is you determine is in-demand - based on the up-front work you did above.

There is no reason you can't get rolling with $100 or less based on this plan.

I'd agree with Jeff, big time. The only adjustment I'd make is, as I mentioned above, the War Room (I almost sound like I have stock in the place) contains TONs of great info all in one place.

Yes, you can certainly find everything you need searching, researching and surfing, but the information you'll find in the WR is all in one place. And, you often get the perspective of people really making money at online marketing. I've gotten so many solid ideas from that place it's hard to believe.

You can also get plenty of great ideas on the main board as well. Part of the education that comes when you're immersed in a pool of people actually doing this is, perspective. You get to see the products they create along with the marketing methods they use.

I agree with joining the War Room. Every time I need a new idea or new slant on things the War Room is the place to go. It is truly a great investment.

Second, do some research on what you are interested in to see if it will make you any money. There are plenty of free resources out there.

Third, domain name, cheap hosting, install Wordpress, get a free squeeze page.

Fourth, sign up for Aweber (or something similar) and start building a list. The more you invest in building a list the more money you will make over time.

Not to be self serving, but there is a lot of free info at the link below too. Hope this helps and good luck to you.

What do you mean by "scratch"? Does this mean absolutely no experience and complete new to the world of internet marketing? Or just no website and business yet?

With a budget of $100, I would advise picking up a domain from Godaddy.com with 2 months of web hosting. The domain will be $1.99 per year with the non domain purchase of hosting. Hosting would be around $4.99 per month for 2 months.

So we're at around $12 so far...

Next, I would purchase an autoresponder from GetResponse for $10 a month. I think Aweber has got some nicer features, but for the value and budget, Getresponse is a reliable autoresponder service.

    Now we're at $22.

Next, I would download Primo PDF for free and make a PDF report to give to my list as an ethical bribe for signing up.

Create the autoresponder sequence, send clickbank affiliate offers to your list until you create your own product. Mask your affiliate links with something like bit.ly URLs.. That's also no-cost.

When you eventually do create your own product, get someone on fiverr.com to create an ebook cover for five bucks.

    So we're at $27...

Drive free traffic to your capture page via free traffic sources like YouTube instructional videos, article directories, niche related forums, and the like...

When you make your first sale or two, pick up some legal forms. The FTC probably wouldn't be as understanding on the issue of a $100 budget. Really, you should probably do that sort of thing first. You can pick those up for about $97 at AutoWebLaw.com.

Hopefully by this point you're making some money so you can keep up with your autoresponder payments and domain hosting. It would really be unfortunate if you started building a list and then couldn't afford to keep your autoresponder.

I personally think if someone wants to dive into internet marketing, it would be smart to enter the game from a position of financial strength... or at least have a few hundred bucks. It'll open up more options.

Of course, if I only had $100 to start, I wouldn't let that stop me either. I'd make the additional money I needed via freelancing, or even get a traditional offline job. Whatever it takes...

Take $37 and get Sean Donahoe's Extreme Niche Empires course. Then you will still have $60 to spare, which you can use to implement and launch one niche site as described in the course. When your site starts making money, reinvest the money into creating more sites. The key to success with this is scaling and automation. Each of these sites is a 'set and forget' site - once you get it set up and running, it runs and generates money on autopilot.

Don't spend a dime until you develop a written plan or niche market you want to focus on.

Most people look for a product and then look for buyers. Wrong! Look for a niche market with buyers then find the product or develop the service.

      1. It should include what you like doing (because you're going to be doing it a lot). The tighter the niche the better chance you have. Avoid jumping from one thing to the next, that will waste your money faster than you can say "blown money".

Research if there's any people buying what you plan to offer.

If you can, offer a "personal service." That would save some that $100 as opposed to have to purchase products.

But personally, if push comes to shove there's always Ebay. Clean out your garage or offer to clean out someone's garage you know. Sell the sale-able items and use the proceeds to build up your seed money.

Hope some of these ideas get you thinking and taking action -Good Luck

How would you invest that £60/$100?
Here this is what I would do:
    (From my book)

"Ok, this wont be a huge book, on the medium length, but will still have great content! This is what you need to have first.

    1. A Zymic hosting account.
This is the free web hosting, I chose Zymic because their Ad-Free and are easy to use!

    2. (Optional) A co.cc domain, you can use a domain that you bought all ready or you can also ust the default domain with the .zxq.net ending of the domain you choose from Zymic.

    3. FileZilla.
This is the FTP or File Transfer Protocol. This is what you use to move the files for your site to the site.

    4. A PayPal account.
This is how you will get paid for what you will be selling.(Will go over that later)

    5. SEO.
If you know what this is then great! If not I will teach you some of the basics later.

Thats pretty much it for now. There are still a few more things that you need but I will cover that later.

Okay this is the part that I start teaching you how to make money! I will walk you through EVERY thing, from setting up the hosting account, to using FileZilla to making your site!

    Part One.
    Section One.

Okay, now that you have all of the accounts, you can get to work. First login to your Zymic account, and then scroll down to "Create New Hosting Account".

Enter your domain name and hit continue.

Type your control panel password and confirm it. This will be used to log in to the control panel- To make changes to your site.

Agree to the Terms Of Service

Make sure your site will not break any of the rules, don't worry about that for now, for the site were making it'll be fine.

Click log in to control panel when done. Then login to your site when done(Click the orange button in the mid part of the page).

    Part One.
    Section Two.

Now that you have made your site domain/hosing account you can get a custom domain by going under the sidebar and choose "Custom Domain". Enter the domain your domain, and get the server info. Under your domain site (where you bought the domain) enter the server info and link the two. I have not used this feature but it should work like that.

    Part Two.
    Section One.

Now you need to make your site. My personal favorite HTML editor/site creator is "KompoZer" its for Mac, PC, and Linux, plus its free!

I wont teach you how to make a website, that would take WAY to long! But you can get some ideas from one of my sites!
    best-money-ebooks.zxq.net
Or just search in Google "How to make a landing page". You'll find a lot of info on that.

    Part Two.
    Section Two.

Ok, now that you have made your site, open up FileZilla. Now under your site control panel you will see:
    FTP
    HOST: [some ID]
    USER: [Some ID]
    Port: [Port Number]

So just put that in to the top of the FileZilla page. But you need a password...Just put the password you chose your site!

Now some text should fly by. Wait a few seconds.
Now navigate to your page that you created for your site and make sure it's named "index.html" and then drag it to the right and done! It will ask if you want to replace the page, and choose yes. Then hit the refresh button at the top of the page! Now wait a minute or two, and go to your site! You should see the page that you have created!

    Part Three.
    Section One.

Sorry that I've kinda been working backwards.
Go over to TradeBit.com. And think of a niche. a niche can be anything! Lamps, Hats, Phones, ANYTHING!
Now search you niche with PLR or MRR after it.
PLR and MRR are the rights to an article(s).
    PLR= Private Label Rights
You have to be careful with these, as not all of them let you re-sell them. Just make sure you read all of the Copyright info!
    MRR= Master Resale Rights
These are MUCH safer as you the buyer have FULL rights to these articles/ eBooks.

    Part Three
    Section Two

Okay, now that you have all of the articles, add them to your cart. In my opinion ten of fifteen dollars of articles is PLENTY to start, as its easy to be up to your neck with files!
After you buy and download them put them in there own folder! Being organized is KEY

    Part Three
    Section Three

Okay, now sort all of the articles and start to choose what articles you will bundle together, and throw in a few "bonus articles"! This will help with sales ALOT.
After you have gotten all of the articles together just zip the folder up! No really, it's called zipping a file because you make it a .zip file.

    Part Four
    Section One

Now here comes the fun part(monetizing)!
If you want to you can use AdSense to make some extra cash. But that poses a risk to distract potential costumers.
When promoting your product on your site be catchy, make people want to read more!

    Part Four
    Section Two

More ways to monetize! If you not afraid of giving away some of your content you can post a few parts of it, give them like one half of the part that your giving away(If that makes sense to you) and for them to get the other part of the free content, they need to fill out an offer (CPA). I personally choose BLAM Ads, for one main reason, the Content Locking Gateway. This lets you choose offers and choose how many offers they (the viewer) have to complete to gain access to the content on that page. I have fount a way to hack past the gateway, but the average Joe wont be able to.

    Part Five
    Section One

Getting close to the end of this book there are still a few things I want to discuss.
One of those things is advertising. Use PPC, atleast thats what I have the best success with anyways. Head over to AdWords and apply for your free eighty bucks of free advertising. You can also get a lot cheaper mobile ads from AdMob.

    Part Five
    Section Two

    SEO- Search Engine Optimization
Very, very important if you want a high pagerank on Google. I'm not an expert with SEO but I can give some tips!
    1. Create Backlinks!
Make sure they are good, high quality links, as crawlers(or Spiders) will skip over links like this:
    "Hey look at this!"

    2. Submit your site to Google!
    Search:
"How to submit my site to Google"

    3. Add alternate text to your images.

    4. Limit Java and Flash on your site.

    5. Updated content will help!

    6. Have a www. or a domain without www. Have the other one redirect to the one you use.

Im afraid this is coming to an end. Please check back to were you bought this book, as I will soon ad am eMail list for those of you who wish to hear about new book I write!"

Best of Wishes And Good Luck,

    Nick Vorie

I agree with jbsmith, don't spend anything. First of all, this forum has great information for free. Although the war room is excellent if you are just starting off. You don't need a domain or hosting just yet, you can start a WordPress.com or Blogger.com blog for free. If I can suggest anything for you, use that money and get a job, then you'll have a lot more money to invest in your business. Definitely start with WordPress.com because it's the most popular website builder, almost everyone here uses it. Wordpress.com is not as powerful as WordPress.org but once you have some income then you can get a host and a domain and install the .org version.

As far as hosting goes... You either pay per month or per year, then what happens if you can't pay the bill? All your work goes down the drain because the host surely will delete your stuff if you don't pay up. A domain is usefull though, makes your Blogger or Wordpress blog look a bit more professional and you only pay once a year and is easier to do WOM (Word of Mouth) marketing. Monetize your blog with CPA, affiliate links and AdSense. Squidoo and HubPages are also good places to get exposure for free. I find squidoo to be fun to use, it's has some sort of a game aspect to it.

Again, $100 or £60 doesn't get you far. After all this is a business and business requires investment. Ask questions, experienced marketers generally don't mind answering questions. So your $100 is almost like throwing it in the fire, you'd be better off to go to a casino, go to the roulette table and bet on black, you ctually have a 50% chance of doubling up. In IM, would take a long time before you see any return on investment and I wouldn't want to see you with an empty wallet, it would give you a sour taste about the industry.

Many new marketers are turned off by the industry after they sink in their last couple bucks in it and never see a return when they read that everything is so easy... "Make $100,000 by next week online from free traffic, it's so easy, even my dog does it." It's a load of crap and most of the stuff they teach, you can find in this forum for free.

I by all means not saying NOT to get the war room membership, it's a great kickstart for n00bs. If I would suggest you pay anything on anything, this is what I would recommend because quite frankly it's like an on-going IM course and tool box, some gurus charge more on a monthly basis and offer less value.

    Hope this helps

Ya know, if you were on a BUDGET, as in thats like ALL you got and won't be getting any more scrilla next month, then you'd wanna go the bum marketing route.

Go hop on Clickbank, find a cool product that you WOULD buy if you could. Preferably a tool like HVST (hot video squeeze templates) by Dan Nickerson because a tool is something that you can promote easily without having to know all about it. You can just do research and help people understand why it would be valuable to them.

So now ya got that, go get on Squidoo and start writing about squeeze pages and template and how you need to get this product in order to build a list and what not.

Make sure to use the Google Keyword Tool in order to target other relevant and related keywords like "landing page template" or "video capture page template" to give ya some ideas.

Then just rinse and repeat this process until you start popping some sales. If you are consistent enough, they will come and you will be able to scale it up.

    ROCK IT!

    LOL CPA Andrew

Nick, a free host??? This is hilarious, thanks for the laugh kid, I don't know how many threads I read from people who got screwed over by those so-called free hosts and low-cost hosting plans.

Here's a great way to get a headache and go nowhere fast. Bud, do yourself that favor and don't waste your time on a free host. You're better off to put a domain on a Blogger blog, which is owned by Google so you don't have to worry about bandwidth caps, concurrent connections and downtime. Every EXPERIENCED IM'er will tell you to avoid free hosts like the plague.

PS: Don't advertise stuff you know nothing about, you'll eventually run into someone who knows their sh*t and you'll look like an idiot.

I would grab an aged-domain (that has been dropped) in a niche that I am really passionate about. Buy hosting for a year and you are well-underway with 100 bucks. Would spend the rest on a link building tool like Scrapebox so I can build my own backlinks in a cheap way.

  • Hi MalBryc. I'll select a set of sub categories or subject areas where a lot of people have relevant immediate needs and urgent problems they can't satisfy nor solve on their own. I'll zone in on the sub categories or subject areas where those people are expected to search and purchase solutions on the Internet. I'll then zone in further on one sub category or subject area where there's a lot of online social networks with large membership bases and contextually relevant discussion pages...

I'd then go to those online social communities to learn about the specific needs, problems and experience of members relevant to the solutions I can offer them later, by reading popular, contextually relevant discussion pages of those communities. Discusson pages top ranking in Google for relevant keywrds would also be good to take note of, as I can go there later to contribute content offering benefits yet to be mentioned in the discussions...

Since I know at this point their particular needs, problems and experience relevant to the sub category or subject area I selected: I'd know which products to develop or which affiliate products to promote. I'd also know how my website should look, what my business name should be, the content I should post on my website, the free digital info product I can offer as a free product to entice viewers to sign up to my mailing list, the things I should contribute to those online social networks and the content of my sales pages or review pages among other useful details, such as the people to contact to help me promote my website, the people to negotiate mutually beneficial joint venture partnerships with and the things to avoid...

Assuming I already have a PayPal account: I'd then register a domain with NameCheap, get a CPanel Web host account from Hostgator, install a Wordpress instance via Fantastico, get a professional, fresh looking Wordpress theme, get useful Wordpress plugins, upload them to the appropriate directories of my Web host server, replace the default banner and other images with my newly developed logo banner and various images to improve the overall look and feel of my website, activate the Wordpress theme and plugins, configure Wordpress and plugin settings and sign up for an account at GetResponse or other good autoresponder providers. Since I'm totally blind, so can't do graphics design and CSS work: The stuff I need to pay for are:

•Graphics Design and CSS Customization Services = $20+/-
•NameCheap Domain Name Registration = $10+/- per year
•Hostgator CPanel Web Host Account = $10+/- per month
    •GetResponse Account = $10+/- per month

That's $50. I'd then develop my products or choose affiliate products to promote, my sales pages or review pages, my free digital info product freely downloadable upon mailing list signup, my site's static pages and seven to ten posts. I'll include links to my sales pages or review pages in my free digital info product...

I'd then sign up as a member of contextually relevant online social communities with large membership bases consisting of people with needs and problems that can be instantly and easily solved by my website content, my free digital info products and my productss or affiliate products...

I'd then continue helping other members with their relevant problems, needs and questions...

If I chose a sub category or subject area where a lot of people who spend a lot of time in Facebook have relevant needs and problems that can be satisfied and solved by my website content, free digital info product and my products or affiliate products: I'd consider Facebook advertising using my remaining $50. If my target viewers spend more time in YouTube: I'll spend my $50 developing videos that can become viral. If my target viewers were more inclined to listen to their friends and colleagues for relevant advice, recommendations and updates: I'd pay someone included in my target market with a ton of like-minded FB friends $50 to review my website content and free digital info product, "Like" my homepage and two posts, then posting the person's review as comments to those "Likes". Alot of ideas, a lot...

Don't know what you mean by starting from 'scratch' . My suggestions:

Learn SEO. It's not rocket science. Basically it comes down to three things:
    a) Good site content (with panda update , even more relevant)
    b) Onsite optimization
    c) Backlinks from different ips. 40-50 good links works much better than 10000s links from junk sites.

Side by side invest in keyword research if you don't know how to do it. Get a domain and baby hosting. Invest time/money in good onsite content.

Start implementing the SEO strategies you learn. (You can even offer some basic service once you get the hang of it.)

Once your site starts profiting, rinse and repeat.

Had I posted this question when I first started, not one of the above replies would have helped me because I was that much of a newbie. I did not even know what a domain name was, let alone hosting. SEO? Are you kidding me, totally clueless.

I read and read this forum and another. It took months for it to start clicking together. My first purchase was One Week Marketing and the rest is history. Still don't understand a lot, but I am making it thanks to the help of others here, and everywhere online.

I also took Ed Dale's 30 Day Challenge. It's free and lots of it starting clicking together then.

How would you invest that £60/$100?
Get $100 worth of lottery tickets.

1st thing I'd do is spend NOTHING.

Rather create a game plan. Choose 1 successful person on this forum you relate to and follow them. Listen to their free advice. Take action on their ideas. Contact them when you have a question.

Last night I spoke with business startup expert, Spike Humer in our live training show about this exact issue...

SuccessBug.com Fools Guide to Rapid Small Business Growth 06/13 by successbug | Blog Talk Radio

You must stay focused. Otherwise you will end up like many others on this forum spending 50 times that and still not make any progress.

    Best of luck!
