Market Size of the IM Niche?

Anyone care to take a crack at estimating the market size of the IM niche?

Here I'm not referring to say brand marketers who work at the large corporate digital marketing firms....

I more so mean those interested in affiliate marketing, selling digital info projects, working from home, etc...

Thanks!

As a percentage of internet users, I think the IM market is much smaller than most IMer realize.

In the "make money online" niche it seems circular with IMers selling to IMers who follow IMers round and round:p

The really big money is not in IM, nor is it even online.

        • I would say it's actually relatively small. It may seem really big when it's all you hear about all day when you're working, but any average person in the street is likely to not have heard anything about it.

If you asked someone in the street about television, health and beauty, self-help - whatever, they will probably be able to tell you something about it or will have used a product associated with these niches.

If you asked them about IM, you may get a few strange looks. The chances are, they'd know nothing about it.

I even have a job explaining it to my own family!

Offline retail sales is not easier, of course, but more money is being made in selling high end physical products. Last reports I've seen for example in Forrester Research stats is that in the US online retail sales were $173 billion for 2010 and is expected to top $200 billion this year. Offline retail sales is roughly 14 times that amount. So, why does everyone seem to want to crowd into the itty bitty IM niche?

Walk into any room and ask 100 people if they are interested in or seeking information on affiliate marketing. What do you think the number of people that say yes will be?

      Depends on which room....

If it's filled with $10 million a year hedge fund managers, the answer will probably be "not very....." lol

Performance based marketing is a very small portion of global ad spend. Small but not insignificant....

I'm just interested to see if anyone can point to any credible research reports citing verifiable stats!

      Thanks!

I'd say it's probably in the hundreds of millions, -maybe- up to a billion. If I were to wager a guess, it'd be about 450 million annually. I could be way off, though.
