If you're on Windows, check out Avast or ClamWin.

Plenty of FREE anti virus programs around. But, if one is open source I would not touch it with a 10 foot pole.

If they are distributing the source code (open source) then the hackers have the code and can get by it easier because they know the inner workings and algos it's using.

Avast is the one I use. It is extremely good. Microsoft Security Essentials is not far behind. Both are free.

At my old job they tried Norton and McAfee at different times, and I got viruses ALL the time. Bad ones where the only solution was for the IT guy to wipe the computer clean and reinstall windows. On my personal computer I use Avast exclusively. I go to all the same websites, and I've never had a single problem. A few times an alert has popped up saying something was just blocked and the site has been closed. Usually that's on sites that have advertising that isn't secure.

Avast is the best I've ever seen, and they keep it up to date regularly, and it's free. If they keep up their level of quality, I plan on using it for life. Hope that helps!

Doesn't open source leave it open to virus creators to reverse engineer the software to create viruses that will get in through the back door?

Since Microsoft created their virus program 'Microsoft Security Essentials' I have been going with that one and have been quite satisfied. I was a dedicated Norton user until it kept interfering with various of my software programs.

      Hi,

I use Comodo Internet Security Premium for firewall and AV. No problems. Free. Nothing gets past.

Download.com is where I go for free software. They are part of CNET.com.

Lots of user input. Good, consistent site with a wide verity of software.

One of the great things is that it list similar software in the same category.

Avast is very good. I use Avira. Comodo for the firewall, etc.

        Hope this helps.
