Does anyone know any good web monitoring service (free or paid) which checks when a website is down and also the speed to download website etc.

    We've built a really solid server and website monitoring system that can do check availability, send out alerts in a heap of different ways and allow you to change thresholds if pages are slow loading.

    It's not free .. just $10 NZD / month (about $8 USD) and that lets you monitor 3 servers (IP addresses) and as many services as you like on each of those ... it also lets you monitor internal server resources too (Disk Space, Load etc).

    give you udates when there is an issue , only had 3 so far and most have been by my business partner doing some updates

    You can have a better try with 100pulse(dot)com, they provide free monitoring service and once if you are satisfied, you can move with paid services. Websites are monitored for every 15 min and alerts are notified during the sites downtime. With paid service, the site is monitored for every 5 min.
