Hi
I have a brand new Wordpress site, and I want to add an opt in form, and when people opt in, have them automatically directed to a page where they can download and ebook.
Problem, I can't figure out how or where to upload the ebook, do I just create a 'private' page? And, I can't find any buttons to upload the file, only media, images etc.
Can someone help me please?
tia

You will need to upload your pdf file to your server using a ftp protocol
It is a bit like saving files to a directory in explorer
You might have a ftp facility with your hosting account or you can download free software like filezilla. ( FileZilla - The free FTP solution)
If you look on youtube you should find instructions on how to upload your file or you can use the wiki on the filezilla site.
This will allow you to open the directory trees on your computer and your website
at the same time. File transfer is as simple as drag and drop.
Once it has been uploaded you can right click and copy the url address for your download button.

    You need several things.

    - Your wordpress blog that provides information for your visitors and hosts the squeeze page.
    - A squeeze page that collects the information from your visitor. This will have a form with boxes for the information you want to gather (name and email address) This is usually a static page (not a post) on your site.
    - An Autoresponder that stores the visitor information and forwards your visitor to the download page. (Aweber is popular)
    - A download page that has the link to the file they download. Usually this is a page that is generated outside of wordpress, but if you don't know how, you can create one in wordpress and mark it "private" so it doesn't appear in the regular listings or posts.
    - The actual file they can download, stored on your site or on a service like Amaon S3 (s3.amazonaws.com). If on your own site, you may need an FTP program or wp-plugin to upload it to your site. If you use something like Amazon S3 for file storage, you can upload it through their dashboard.

Bear in mind that in some cases (depending on your niche), you'll do much better with "single opt-in" (i.e. a setup that doesn't require confirmation before the subscriber's added to your list), but if going down this route, you are presented with the problem of people entering fake/random email addresses in the hope of accessing your download (or sometimes making a genuine typo, and still gaining access), with no way for you to subsequently make contact with them.

One "work around" for this (by no means foolproof - people sometimes set up legitimate, temporary email addresses for this purpose, too) is not to display the download link on your actual website, but insert it into your initial confirmation/welcome email, which ensures at least that the email address the visitor has entered is real, live and accessible.
