I am just starting to use WP on a regular basis and have been reading a lot about how vulnerable it is to hackers. What is the best way to help prevent this (newbie and non-tech friendly please.)

They can hack wordpress by a method know as brute forcing. They use programs to try to login in with different usernames and passwords. The program uses a dictionary to get usernames and passwords. So you can start protecting your wordpress site by not using simple passwords. Use uppercase, symbols, and lowercase characters for your password. You can also install a plugin that limits the number of login attempts which will help too.

  The wordpress plugin 'Login Lockdown' does just that...

  If you have a static IP address you can stop access to your Wordpress Admin by creating and uploading a .htaccess file to your wp-admin folder. This need to disallow all with the exception if your IP address.
  
  Your .htaccess for this folder would look something like this -
  
  AuthName "your name"
  AuthType Basic
  <Limit GET POST>
  order deny,allow
  deny from all
  allow from 87.116.298.110 (Your own IP address needs to go here)
  </Limit>
  
  This won't work if you have a dynamic IP address.

  Also, try changing your password every month or even every week or day if your that worried.
  
  I use roboform to save the majority of my passwords aside from website admins and the sites that hold information to producing money, like affiliate networks.

WordPress is no worse than any other platform WRT security - in fact a lot better than some because when they find a vulnerability it's plugged very quickly.

There are many ways a WordPress site can be hacked and some don't even have to do with WordPress itself.

Give them the user name and password to your WP blog and make sure you use the same user/pass combo for your bank account...

LOL, jk man...

But seriously, WP ain't all the venerable. At least not when compared to other sites out there. Fact is, if someone REALLY wants to hack you, they're gonna do it. Just like if I REALLY wanted to run you over with my car, I'd do it.

You've got about the same chance getting your WP blog hacked, ya feel me?

Just focus on making money and delivering great content and deal with that nasty stuff when it comes across your plate.

Not only wordpress, website, blog, or any web based account can be a target of hackers. Some hackers do it for fun and others for black financial benefits. According to the truths of hacking you can’t 100% believe any anti virus program or internet security system? Be ready and defense yourself. This is how I do it? I’ve shared one computer (old PIV Laptop) for accessing into all of my online accounts. It has installed only OS, MS Words, and Firefox as web browser. I don’t surf any other website through this computer except sites I’ve true accounts (PayPal, ePay, CJ, REAL Gmail and Yahoo accounts ………..)

if they want you, they will get you, ask Sony and many others...

Read and FOLLOW the articles provided by the others and keep an eye on things is about the best you can do. There are some security scanners that will watch your system and notify you if a file is modified or added.
Also, keeping frequent backups is suggested. Don't learn the hard way, like many have.

Like previously stated make a very unique password. Say something like &Ft6N*^. Using a password made up just numbers and letters is much more easy to hack.
