Given that Google have publicly declared that they don't very much care for syndicated articles or article marketing.
The farmer update has edited the algorithm to downgrade sites that may be considered as article repositories, so it may be possible that if your backlinks are from article directories, may may be at a disadvantage.
Even the once touted EZA has been affected
I am curious as to whether articles can be still effective and for how long?
There may be multiple applications and sites devoted to article marketing, eg submitters, spinners etc, are they destined for the graveyard or is Google talking out of the sides of their mouths?

Article marketing is there to stay,
for a simple reason, the web needs
    good quality content.
If nobody writes any articles anymore,
then people who surf the net will be getting
lesser, as a result, it will affect globally.

True, one of the main reasons why the internet was developed is information itself. Wondered why Google has been dominant and internet marketing is possible? Because people are continuously seeking for new answers online which leads us to the conclusion that relevant contents are the vital building blocks of the internet. Google might constantly change their algorithm but it will never be away from focusing on rich contents.

    That's putting it mildly.

But of course that relates only to "article directory marketing", not to "article marketing" per se.

Which is one of the reasons why, over the last few months, there've been a few dozen threads here in which so many professional article marketers are reporting that Google's latest algorithm change has been good for our businesses. Taking so many of the article directory copies off the front page of Google's SERP's has clearly made it easier, overall, for us to rank the articles on our own sites, which is where we want the traffic to go in preference to an article directory, for all the obvious reasons.

They seem to many of us to be increasingly effective.

Article directories, of course, hardly at all (but that was always the case, even before the "farmer update" - depending on article directories for backlinks and/or traffic has been a 'mugs' game' for a long time.)

"Destined"? They've been there a couple of years that I know of.

This thread (and plenty of others like it) might interest you.

    Articles are still strong.

What is not so strong anymore is the big article directories. Write unique content, get them on different platforms and stop wasting time with sites singled out as "content farms" such as EZA.

If the site's entire purpose is to get as many articles as possible these will be worth less than sites that offer quality content but also will accept on topic articles if you submit them.
