Thanks to Beverley and Fab_DM for their replies

I am obviously based in the UK and am trying to setup a website/domain and i have been spending the last few days searching for the right host, i think i have narrowed it down to either Hostpapa or iPage as i assume it is better to go with a UK based host rather than Hostgator (USA). Deadbeat refers to mainly the US market and Amazon.com and i will be concentrating on Amazon.co.uk so i am quessing that my domain should be "... .co.uk" rather than "... .. .com" any info would be great. Thanks.

Welcome to the forum from another brit.

If i was yourself I would still go for a .com domain.

Even large british companies use .com. I have an email account with bt and their domain is btinternet.com not .co.uk

That is just the sort of advice i was looking for, i didnt want to alienate myself from the UK but at the same time .com seems to be more world wide !! cheers for that

i was actually looking at Hostgator to start with and then i thought as i was uk based that going for iPage or Hostpapa would be better, now i have three to choose from .... !!! On top of that i have got to choose a domain name, any ideas on how to do that, i gather better to be short ?!! any advise is exstremely welcome as i am a true novice at IM. cheers bud

As for choosing your domain, I can't comment on behalf of your countrymen, but I'm in good connection with quite a few and they all use .com. Certainly they know, why.

Myself also use only .com domains.

Hi smartrobin and welcome.

If you've decided to use Amazon UK and you're targeting UK residents, it would probably be fine to go for a .co.uk domain; but there may be other considerations impacting your decision (for instance, how you want to structure your business).

I'll admit that I use a UK host for my (few) .co.uk domains and US hosts for all the others. There may be some SEO advantage, but I haven't tested this in any scientific way - I just feel that having more than one host makes sense from an eggs/basket point of view.

Hey Frank, very difficult decision to make as i am not totally familiar yet with buzz words like SEO !! i want to hit world wide so i dont want to limit myself to .co.uk but dont want to alienate myself from the UK with .com Not sure if i am trying to run before i can walk by registering with both Amazon UK and Amazon.com. I have only started with Internet Marketing this week and dont want to make decisions i will regret !!

Well, I wouldn't think of it in terms of limiting - more of specialisation.

Consider your visitor. If she's in the UK and looking for a new TV, would she be more comfortable buying from Amazon in the UK or having it shipped from the US?

It's tempting to want to hit the whole world simply because the internet has a global reach, but that approach might not be the most effective for the products you want to sell or the channel you're going to use to sell them.

And don't worry about regretting those domain/hosting decisions. For what you'll need to spend to start off with, it's a cheap education. You'll learn so much by just getting going.

I'm from the UK, I use Hostgator. I never use .co.uk, Always .com or .org. Although I wouldn't rule out .co.uk if I had to to use it.
Regarding to Amazon UK, we have a cap of £7 on higher priced products, pain in the back side, but you can defo work with it.

Well, always make sure your keywords are in the domain mate. Even if you can't get keyword.com go for things like;

keywordexposed.com
keywordinfo.com

I'm no veteran in internet marketing, but I have four sites all on page one in google. Three are Amazon related sites one is weight loss related. With the weight loss one I couldn't get keyword.com so I got keywordrevealed.com and I rank number 1, and still pull in over 100 visitors a day, so as long as your keywords are in the domain, you'll be well on your way to ranking sites. Obviously there are other things to take into consideration, but this is one thing that will make life a lot easier!

I think i need a book for "dummies" as i am not sure how things work, i thought that if i setup a domain name it would be something like my own personal name and the when i selected niche products there would be a link from my website to another page, i need to sit down with someone on a one to one basis and explain things but that could be difficult finding people local . I need a mentor !! i am sorry i ask so many stupid questions, just never done anything like this before. !!

Hi - I'm in Bristol; and would echo the fact that Hostgator are good, and I use Bluehost as well. Usually go for .com .net or .org, but I have a few others too!

If you haven't signed up already, try doing a search for a "Hostgator discount coupon" - you can often get the first month for about 1 dollar,

I have an Amazon.com affiliate account, because it's a bigger market, and I think that's a better option especially when you're just starting out.

You're eventually going to have lots of domain names - you might get a discount by buying a .com and .co.uk version at the same time,

One thing I'd suggest is talk to as many people as you possibly can. You'd be amazed at how much awesome info people are willing to share here.

And the Brits really do seem to stick together as well... kinda like an 'us against the world' thing... which can only help

You've got your program... just do that. Do it until it makes you rich or sends you to the poorhouse

Any gaps in the knowledge, just ask the folks here, but keep focused.

To start this affiliate process i assume i have to register first with an affiliate co, ie Amazon, then search for products and then add them. as i have not actually created or designed my own website. is that correct in a nutshell !!?

Hi Smartrobin,

I'm in the UK as well, and one of my niches is targeted almost exclusively at UK traffic.

I believe that it doesn't matter, these days, whether you use a .co.uk or a .com name for it. But if it's really a "UK only" niche, it's impossible to see the downside of a .co.uk.

Hosting location matters, though. You do need to be hosted in the UK as it will help you rank highly on UK-Google. It's not about transfer/download speeds, it's about Google recognising a UK IP number and ranking your site more highly on google.co.uk because of that.

For my UK hosting, after doing a lot of research on the subject, I decided to use a very good, very reliable company called Heart Internet and I recommend them (I'm not an affiliate - just a happy customer).

Just wondering: you're aware of the ceiling on UK-Amazon commissions payable, are you? You know it's not like US-Amazon, from which affiliates can earn their percentage regardless of the price of the product? :confused:

to be honest i dont know whether i am coming or going, i have registered with iPage and although it comes highly recommended, as its based in the USA, i cant afford to ring them and its difficult to explain things on Live Chat !! I have a domain name and i am going through the process of training with the Deadbeat Super Affiliate program. i am abit embarrassed to keep on asking really silly basic questions. i need someone in the UK i can contact and have a chat. !! Well that's the big secret isn't it

Essentially, you want to find a market first... you want to find a group of people who have a problem (social awkwardness), or need a solution to something (snoring), or have a real passion for something else (surfing)...

Then work out if people are actually BUYING things in that market (doing a google search and seeing 3+ people advertising with adwords is a good sign) so you know you can make money too.

Then find a product (clickbank is a good place to start for a first time affiliate) and start marketing it....

There are way too many details to get into for one post... but keep asking around (I'd suggest asking folks other than me since this isn't my area of expertise if I'm honest!) or join the War Room if you can... the info in there is golden. Worth way more than 'the price of admission'

You might want to reconsider the .com extension if you want predominantly UK traffic, here's my experience:

I'm UK based and set up my first two websites earlier this year hosted at hostgator, one a .com the other a .co.uk. I admit to doing minimal promotion, just distributing a couple of articles for each site at the same directories. I'm getting a small amount of traffic to both sites and its steadily building.

However the traffic to the .com is 65% US but the traffic to the .co.uk is 75% UK.

As both sites are US hosted and identical means were used to promote them I'm making the assumption that its the extension that is influencing the search engines.

Hi, i have actually gone for a .com domain as i think i am going to target the US market as the commission's seem to be higher !! not sure if i have done the right thing or not, too confused to tell really !!

I too am from the UK and have been selling online since internet began using the good old message boards

Those were the days lol

Glad to see the questions you are asking but at the end of the day we all need to take action or we will be asking questions all along and not doing anything.

I use Hostgator and also Godaddy - Godaddy offer a UK number that routes to USA so free calls. Yes I know people do not like Godaddy as a host but I find them good and helpful.

I would say always use a .com unless you are targeting a niche in a certain country, then I would buy both .com and .au or co.uk. .com are someting people know and just add to the end if they often search.

Ok, read through the whole thread.

Hostgator, definate. My first choice.
Fast, cheap and relatively reliable. Excellent live help.

Forget Godaddy, I have used them, in fact I still have some domains with them.
Servers are well past full, restrictions on scripts.

Chalk and cheese.

Always go for .com if you can. The .co.uk will almost certainly have less value than the .com in the end.

If you're just starting out then you should be looking at joining the War Room then reading as many of the things you find inside as you can.

After the knowledge overload, start looking into wordpress. It is the easiest way if you need to make a website. Amazon functionality can be built in via a simple plugin.

If you want to sell to people in the UK then there are advantages to UK hosting. I use webhosting UK which is slightly cheaper than even the baby account in hostgator and they have been problem free. There may be a perceived higher value to .com domains to anyone outside the UK but to sell to the UK I always use .co.uk

One thing with Amazon - yes there is a cap with Amazon.co.uk on the amount they will pay on higher priced products but the competition is far less and it is much easier to sneak into an under exploited niche. Also Amazon.com only pays by cheque to UK affiliates, you have to earn over $150 before you get a payout and then the payment is in US$ which through my bank costs £6.50 to exchange and takes around a week. So it's swings and roundabouts.

yes, again very useful info thanx . not sure i was a bit hasty getting a .com but might as well go with it, maybe in time will get a .co.uk as well
