I might. I might use a variation of something like that.

If you're talking about a Wordpress site, that's added automatically. I don't usually add it to non-wordpress sites - to be honest it had never occurred to me to do it!

It's absolutely necessary to add this if you
want to 100% legal with your stuff.

I mean if someone steals your content, then
you should bother to sue that person.

Do you know this for sure?

I was under the ompression that as soon as you your content online it is protected.

Just because someone doesn't put a copyright sign doesn't mean you can steal their content.

As soon as you write it, it is protected. But I add it to all my sites anyway.

Nah.. Unless you tell that something is

I don't follow what you mean.

Why would someone doubt that your content is yours?

It's easy to see when someone has stolen other people's content - usually the person who first published it is the creator.

Anyway - if people are stealing other people's content they'll probably get found out at some point and it's a great way to ruin your reputation and make sure your visitors never come back again so hopefull it's only desperate newbies that even want to do it.

Okay. Let's say we have a site X that
published and article on June 10 2011.
            A person from site Y copy-pastes the
article to his Wordpress site, and changes
the publishing date to June 9, 2011.

Now, a normal user visits both sites. For him
site Y is the original publisher. But is it really
            so?

But can we do since site X had no such sign
indicating that the content was the sole
property of the site, and could not be
            reproduced without permission.

Not true. You "can't" (and by that I mean it's copyright infringement) do it whether the notice appears or not. See the link I posted above for more clarification.

Okay. That would enlighten me. Thanks.

                Here's something I found:

Use of the copyright notice may be important because it informs the public that the work is protected by copyright, identifies the copyright owner, and shows the year of first publication. Furthermore, in the event that a work is infringed, if a proper notice of copyright appears on the published copy or copies to which a defendant in a copyright infringement suit had access, then no weight shall be given to such a defendant's defense based on innocent infringement. Innocent infringement occurs when the infringer did not realize that the work was protected.

Copyright Notice and the Use of the Copyright Symbol
Yes - so you already have copyright on anything you publish but adding specific copyright information and dates means that when people do steal your stuff they have zero chance of pleading ignorance, whereas if you don't put the copyright symbol they're still not allowed to do it, but their lies about not knowing they shouldn't steal it might be at least considered.

I don't even think about this stuff because - it's only an issue if you're stealing people's stuff or they're stealing yours and you want to chase them in court for it.

Neither is the case for me so it's largely irrelevant to me personally.

With all that said - I do add the copyright text for client sites when I do work for offline clients but i try to get them to have someone else build the site so that's not really something I get involved with now either.

Thanks for sharing anyway - it's always good to be reminded about this stuff as there really are people who think you can steal people's content unless they specify that you can't.

I am under the same impression as well, as is the US Copyright Office. Quoting that page, "While use of a copyright notice was once required as a condition of copyright protection, it is now optional."

And to your point: conversely, just because you put a copyright notice on your site doesn't mean people won't steal your content!

Yeah I always add a copyright, I don't include my company name though because that would create a big footprint so a competitor can find all my sites.

I think it is a small deterrent from people that would otherwise steal your content. A reminder that you are watching your content and that attempting to steal your content is a big no no. Although, if someone wants to steal your content enough, a small copyright notice will definitely not stop them. Personally I would always suggest adding a small copyright notice.

I put it at the bottom of my webpages to ward off casual copycats. Once a guy even stole my content and created a similar site on a free domain with his contact details. I threatened him with severe consequences for stealing a copyright material . He deleted his site soon.

[I am not a lawyer, but this is my understanding of the law]

I just wanted to add that actually registering or a copyright gives you more legal protection, but you can still use the copyright symbol either way.

Registering for a U.S. copyright can be done online and only costs $35. There is a slight learning curve, but it's pretty simple once you do it.

    All the best,
    Michael
