Great post. I ruled out Amazon years ago because of their low commissions, but then realized that the commissions are lower because the conversion rate is so much higher then virtually any other site. So you can use that to your advantage and turn it into a positive.

Jeremy, thanks, these are excellent tips! I've always kept away from these small ticket items, but convincing customers to buy in bulk should actually be worthwhile.

I would just like to know how do you market these fast moving consumer goods (FMCG), such as razor blades for example - do you use brand-name marketing, or do you just make a post about razor blades? In other words, are customers brand-sensitive about these type of products in your experience?

solid solid stuff here. There really isn't much more to it than this, if I may add, and some warriors will probably disagree with me on this but - Stop chasing #1 rankings for new sites.

Build a site, get it on page 1 and then move on and build another one, when you've got 20 sites with page one rankings, then you can start to get a feel for whats converting and whats not and then start working on pushing individual rankings up the ladder.

My reasons for this:

- Page 1 rankings are relatively easy and will bring a small amount of traffic whereas #1 rankings take considerable more time and effort
- Pushing too hard for a #1 ranking on a new site out of the gate can end up causing problems with goog, giving your site some time to 'brew' lower down on page 1 makes it a lot easier to push later on.
- Some sites won't convert very well and some will convert insanely better than others, this will give you time to gauge each sites potential - then work on the winners!

Jeremy - You've put down some great tips here. When you begin, you must create more high volume sites and few big ticket ones. Many aspiring affiliates make several big ticket product sites when they begin, only to become disenchanted with less sales and low commissions. High volume and low priced items are necessary not only for buyers to buy in bulk but for an affiliate to boost his own morale and confidence as well.

Products like perfumes which are based on pleasing the senses do not do so well online because people like to check out the fragrances first before buying.

I think the opportunity with Amazon as Amazon continues to drop more affiliates for changing taxation legislation. California just passed its law and we are all waiting for the hammer to drop on our strong incomes. There may also be some JV opp's with all those affiliates that have lost their revenue. Although they can't sell, they can redirect their established traffic.

A while back I created an amazon mini mall system for myself with around 50 of my domains and I guess by dumb luck I was apparently following your suggestion about high and low price products. I did notice my commission rate increasing with the number of sales, though the only sales I paid attention to were the big ticket $500+ items I sold, at the time I didn't appreciate the impact of the smaller sales.

My sites were pure stores with no content, but on the actual generic product .com domain, so I initially got decent traffic regardless. Eventually google moved my sites from top positions above amazon farther and farther down and off the first page.

Your post has encouraged me to finish my new and improved mall system and make it even bigger now that I appreciate the low dollar item sales are more valuable than I realized. Your suggestion about selling in bulk makes sense and on my vitamin sites I used to show the six packs rather than the individual bottles just because I wanted to make more than a few cents. The funny thing is it seemed everyone was buying the special offers by amazon, not what I was actually selling, like they dumped my item from their shopping cart for the special of the day at checkout.

Finally I figured out that I should just promote the specials myself, maybe that is an idea to add to your list. It didn't occur to me to focus on the really irresistible small ticket offers on my sites to increase sales but it makes perfect sense now.

Another tip is to find very quirky or unusual things and link to them. People will want to check out the thing and so go to Amazon via the link. Once they are there you will get comission on anything they buy.

I set up associate-omatic a wile ago, I think i need to update it.

I was finding products with a good price, then locating the page on my site, then posting the link to deal sites, worked great, till the deal sites deleted my acct, and I made more, and it got anoying. I might have gotten banned from Dealspl.us. That site will take your deal, and put their own referral code in but forcing people to goto my site stopped their auto referral switch.

Very helpful information. It has been found that in many cases, you can rank higher for a specific item than the page on a big box retailer site. For those people who are looking to buy a certain item, this can be a great advantage.

I am starting to get a little frusterated in the lack of sales I am getting in my handfull of amazon sites. While most of them are in the top ten pages of google, I have yet to land one on the first page. Mine seem to be dancing around quite a bit which I hope is a good thing and will hopefully end up a lot higher when they stop dancing as much.

Most of m exact searches are between 1000-1600. I did not know initially that you should aim for a little higher volume (3000+ for instance)

I will take that into consideration in the future.

I feel like my sites look extremely good and my reviews are long and very detailed with every bit of information I could find on each product both good and bad to make it very impartial. It sounds like my lack of sales is simply due to the lack of traffic because I picked low traffic keywords and am not high enough in the rankings to bring enough people in.

Even at low commissions, the economies of scale that are inherent in Amazon make it worthwhile to have some Amazon review sites. I mostly promote low priced items, simply because I sell more of those, and it puts me into the higher percentage rates. Good post!

I have been trying to learn more about how to earn using Amazon and honestly, it's been a bit frustrating since I haven't had that much sales until now. Although it's not that long ago when I started in Amazon, it's only been 6 months but I know it's not that quick.
And thank you for what you have shared in this thread; I have more to learn in this Amazon thing since there are more for me to learn. Hope I will hit the mark even if I will not hit the bulls eye.

I'm in the process of setting my three daughters up as Amazon affiliates - nothing fancy, just a basic blog where they can write reviews. It's more for the experience than the need for money.
