10 Tricks that help me make over $1000 a month from Amazon

For the last 2 months I have made over $1000 a month on Amazon and it looks like this month will be well over $1000 as well. Here are 5 tricks that have helped me and should definitely help you as well!
  • Create a variety of sites, but there are two types of products you should focus on, high volume and big ticket
  • Create high volume products sales sites (think razor blade and handle type products, things people NEED) to market products that people NEED to buy, and buy on a monthly basis
  • Once you have traffic to your high volume product sites tell people to buy in bulk this simple trick will turn a person from buying 1 item, to 10 items and your commission from $1 to $10! People actually read your posts, and a little push is all they need to spend more
  • You want to create sites for small ticket items to increase your payout. Amazon has a tier for their commission, you have to sell over a certain amount of products to reach 7%, 7.5%, 8% etc. Sell a lot of small ticket items to increase the payout for your big ticket items.
  • also create sites for big ticket items. You may only sell one or two laptops a per week, but getting $25 commission is pretty sweet!
  • Know the payouts - some items have a cap on the commission, or lower payouts. Electronics generally have a 4% commission, but other big ticket items pay upwards of 7%
  • Avoid the cap - Some items are capped, when I sell the computer the most I can make is $25, when I sell a treadmill I can make up to $100
  • Try to make sites around what people like to buy online and are expensive. What do you buy online, or look for online, stuff that is small and expensive are more likely to be bought online like watches, sunglasses, video games etc. These are good things to make sites about (an authority domain around video games would KILL on amazon)
  • Convince people to buy - before I post the affiliate link I like to remind people of the benefits of buying online, stuff like better prices, more shopping options, free shipping, delivery right to your front door. This likely pushes a few extra people to buy that normally might now
  • Your affiliate links are important. I find the best conversion is in text links, and adding the affiliate link to the images. A little buy now button in your image will help increase click throughs. Really all you want to do is send people to Amazon, who knows what they will buy
I hope these tips help, let me know what has helped you improve your sales on Amazon!

Excellent post Jeremy. You gave me a few ideas to try on a couple of my Amazon sites. I haven't used text links on my sites, only image links, so I will try it out. Good idea to tell people about the benefits of buying online, I never thought about that either.

      Appreciate the post, thanks.

Thanks for the tips - talk about gold dust! My Amazon is nowhere near that as Ive diversified on adsense, amazon and clickbank, but it sure shows what happens when you focus.

I like the idea about buying in bulk.

It does appear Amazon will dump California soon. But these ideas will work for any affiliate program. I converted all my affiliate links to similar products in Walmart, Best Buy, Barnes & Noble, and directly with hundreds of niche mfgs without missing a beat.

Great post. I ruled out Amazon years ago because of their low commissions, but then realized that the commissions are lower because the conversion rate is so much higher then virtually any other site. So you can use that to your advantage and turn it into a positive.

Jeremy, thanks, these are excellent tips! I've always kept away from these small ticket items, but convincing customers to buy in bulk should actually be worthwhile.

I would just like to know how do you market these fast moving consumer goods (FMCG), such as razor blades for example - do you use brand-name marketing, or do you just make a post about razor blades? In other words, are customers brand-sensitive about these type of products in your experience?

      Good work.

I make a little over $1000 a month between adsense and ebay.

Amazon has been the tough one for me to crack.
Maybe some of these ideas can help me achieve my amazon goals.

Do you use any software? I've recently installed comparipress on some of my sites. What about phpzon or niche site platform? Or do you do everything manually on your sites? Do you use Wordpress?

      Thanks,

solid solid stuff here. There really isn't much more to it than this, if I may add, and some warriors will probably disagree with me on this but - Stop chasing #1 rankings for new sites.

Build a site, get it on page 1 and then move on and build another one, when you've got 20 sites with page one rankings, then you can start to get a feel for whats converting and whats not and then start working on pushing individual rankings up the ladder.

    My reasons for this:

    - Page 1 rankings are relatively easy and will bring a small amount of traffic whereas #1 rankings take considerable more time and effort
    - Pushing too hard for a #1 ranking on a new site out of the gate can end up causing problems with goog, giving your site some time to 'brew' lower down on page 1 makes it a lot easier to push later on.
    - Some sites won't convert very well and some will convert insanely better than others, this will give you time to gauge each sites potential - then work on the winners!

Jeremy - You've put down some great tips here. When you begin, you must create more high volume sites and few big ticket ones. Many aspiring affiliates make several big ticket product sites when they begin, only to become disenchanted with less sales and low commissions. High volume and low priced items are necessary not only for buyers to buy in bulk but for an affiliate to boost his own morale and confidence as well.

Products like perfumes which are based on pleasing the senses do not do so well online because people like to check out the fragrances first before buying.

I think the opportunity with Amazon as Amazon continues to drop more affiliates for changing taxation legislation. California just passed its law and we are all waiting for the hammer to drop on our strong incomes. There may also be some JV opp's with all those affiliates that have lost their revenue. Although they can't sell, they can redirect their established traffic.

What do you think about using these techniques?

    - promote only products over $150 in value
    - write very long product reviews

    Great Post

A while back I created an amazon mini mall system for myself with around 50 of my domains and I guess by dumb luck I was apparently following your suggestion about high and low price products. I did notice my commission rate increasing with the number of sales, though the only sales I paid attention to were the big ticket $500+ items I sold, at the time I didn't appreciate the impact of the smaller sales.

My sites were pure stores with no content, but on the actual generic product .com domain, so I initially got decent traffic regardless. Eventually google moved my sites from top positions above amazon farther and farther down and off the first page.

Your post has encouraged me to finish my new and improved mall system and make it even bigger now that I appreciate the low dollar item sales are more valuable than I realized. Your suggestion about selling in bulk makes sense and on my vitamin sites I used to show the six packs rather than the individual bottles just because I wanted to make more than a few cents. The funny thing is it seemed everyone was buying the special offers by amazon, not what I was actually selling, like they dumped my item from their shopping cart for the special of the day at checkout.

Finally I figured out that I should just promote the specials myself, maybe that is an idea to add to your list. It didn't occur to me to focus on the really irresistible small ticket offers on my sites to increase sales but it makes perfect sense now.

Another tip is to find very quirky or unusual things and link to them. People will want to check out the thing and so go to Amazon via the link. Once they are there you will get comission on anything they buy.

I set up associate-omatic a wile ago, I think i need to update it.

I was finding products with a good price, then locating the page on my site, then posting the link to deal sites, worked great, till the deal sites deleted my acct, and I made more, and it got anoying. I might have gotten banned from Dealspl.us. That site will take your deal, and put their own referral code in but forcing people to goto my site stopped their auto referral switch.

      1. Not page one for all keywords, just some of them.

      2. At least 1,000 exact monthly searches although it depends on the niche as some niche have low search volume but still have buyers. Ideally it should be at least 3,000+ exact searches.

      3. That depends on various factors such as the niche, how many reviews you have. 90% of google traffic comes from page 1 so you need to get most keywords on there. In most cases you won't see much money until you reach page 1.

I posted this in another amazon thread a couple days ago but a big thing is making sites that promote small accessories for higher ticket items. That's what i used for my small ticket sites and they are responsible for my higher commission rates. My sites will hit $500 this month and growing.

that's off of 10 sites so its pretty spread out. Only a few are real winners, but I've learned what works and what doesn't and what kind of competition I can keep up with. hope to have 10 more up by the ned of the month and 30 sites by the end of October.

I hope you dont mind me asking but what percentage of your 10 sites are on the first page for their coresponding keywords?

What is the average price of the items you are reviewing?
Are they mostly around the common $150-200 mark or do you aim a lot higher toward the $1K mark?

at an average of $50/month/site, It would make sense to assume you are making a sale every two or three days?

Thanks in advance. As I mentioned earlier I have a handful of Amazon review sites that I am only making $50-100/month total. I would like to start making a little closer to $50/site soon and I think the main key to this in my case is to get them each on the first page of google instead of hanging out on page three

I am starting to get a little frusterated in the lack of sales I am getting in my handfull of amazon sites. While most of them are in the top ten pages of google, I have yet to land one on the first page. Mine seem to be dancing around quite a bit which I hope is a good thing and will hopefully end up a lot higher when they stop dancing as much.

Most of m exact searches are between 1000-1600. I did not know initially that you should aim for a little higher volume (3000+ for instance)

I will take that into consideration in the future.

I feel like my sites look extremely good and my reviews are long and very detailed with every bit of information I could find on each product both good and bad to make it very impartial. It sounds like my lack of sales is simply due to the lack of traffic because I picked low traffic keywords and am not high enough in the rankings to bring enough people in.

Thank you very much for the input. I would love to hear from others peoples experience in this area though

    Jeremy,

Thanks for sharing. As I am fairly new to the Amazon program, free valuable information like yours will certainly help me get going. It was very motivating to read your post.

    Continued success!

    Jeremy,

    >Once you have traffic to your high volume product sites...
Can you share how you got started driving traffic and exactly what you did?

I seem to be making more money on pages, that say "check out other books our clients enjoy" and other pages such as this that list the books.

But I really enjoy your tips. Thanks for sharing. There are some amazon big dogs on this forum, and I dont mind learning there secrerts from time to time.

Nice tips, where folks don't buy much, it would be prudent to focus on the high value items

Even at low commissions, the economies of scale that are inherent in Amazon make it worthwhile to have some Amazon review sites. I mostly promote low priced items, simply because I sell more of those, and it puts me into the higher percentage rates. Good post!

    Amazing tips, thanks!

"Sell a lot of small ticket items to increase the payout for your big ticket items."

That one right there was golden.

I probably need to try and do more of this. I keep hoping that if I have enough sites selling large ticket items then that problem will take care of itself!

If you are on the performance plan, and you should be if it's available, selling just 7 $0.99 Kindle ebooks, movie downloads or music downloads per month will give you a 50% raise in commission on every large ticket item you sell that month.

If you can't move a 99 cent item every three or four days, selling big ticket items is not your major worry...

I am already hitting the 7+ products a month
I am talking about the next level up that requires 24 more sales than that!

    Hi Jeremy -

Thanks for those tips! Do you create sites around 1 niche and then offer several products per site? Or do you create 1 site per product?

I'm interested in getting started with physical products and just got my Amazon affiliate account set up. Your tips are just in time - so thanks. Now it's just about figuring out the best way to set up my site and help people make that buying decision.

I'm going to try to pre-sell with my own story for my site visitors - but know that sometimes people just want you to talk to them like a real person first and foremost. Do you have any recommendations for the 'tone' of these affiliate sites?

    Thanks for all the help!

    Gigi

Thanks for sharing us some tips Jeremy, and congratulations to your achievement. I have been trying to learn more about how to earn using Amazon and honestly, it's been a bit frustrating since I haven't had that much sales until now. Although it's not that long ago when I started in Amazon, it's only been 6 months but I know it's not that quick.
And thank you for what you have shared in this thread; I have more to learn in this Amazon thing since there are more for me to learn. Hope I will hit the mark even if I will not hit the bulls eye.

I'm in the process of setting my three daughters up as Amazon affiliates - nothing fancy, just a basic blog where they can write reviews. It's more for the experience than the need for money. Do you think this type of straight-up review site (focused on toys, books, and electronics - their interests) could make some money?

Thanks for the post and info!

Great tips...and that's the first time I think I've ever seen someone recommend promoting lots of "small ticket" items.
