Besides Search Engines, whats the next best traffic generation method?

I've come to realise lately that majority, if not all of my subscribers find me through Google/Yahoo. A small percentage come through related blogs in my Niche.

Which gets me thinking, if Google/Yahoo were to ever slap my site, I'd be pretty screwed. I have plenty of articles all over the web, but the traffic I actually recieve from them is minimal at best.

I'm guessing the next best traffic generation methods are PPC and Solo Ads, which I don't have the funds for yet..

So my question is.. Are there any other powerful free, (or cheap) methods that I haven't mentioned.

Thanks.

Direct Traffic is probably the best traffic method because you need not bother about SEO, Google slapping you or spending money on ADs. However to get direct traffic:

    1) You need a really Good Website with regularly added content in a broad niche
    2) Need to popularize the site first using other traffic methods so that one can know about your website
    3) Offer an incentive for visitors to come back to your website

I believe PPC is the most effective to precisely target the right audience , but as you said you need to have a start-up budget .

Direct Media buys is another good option .

And , as to the free traffic option , You can use guest posting in high traffic and authority sites in your niche .

Make also sure to build a list , instead of directly sending the traffic into custom landing pages .

My traffic sources are nearly the exact opposite from the OP. Search engines are a negligible factor. Most of my direct traffic comes from articles submitted to niche websites, blogs and highly targeted ezine publishers.

Writing articles is about the most effective free marketing method I know, and it actually is so powerful it can effectively compete head to head against the heavy hitters in any hotly competitive market.

How are you submitting your articles to websites/blogs in your niche for free?

Do a keyword search for the top ranking websites/blogs in your niche. Then contact the site owners in the top 1-3 of the SERPs to submit your articles. Also consider targeted ezine publishers as they are usually hungry for relevant articles for their subscribers. Many of these subscribers may even publish ezines of their own, so the potential for highly convertable traffic is staggering.

How do I find ezine publishers? Are there any websites you can recommend.

I really appreciate your advice, thank you.

Media Buys, and newer forms of PPC via Facebook, POF and so on have quickly become the go to methods for the truly big players out there.

It is always good to diversify your traffic sources because, as you said, you don't want to be caught in a position where, let's say, if one of them die, a major chunk of your traffic takes a dip.

For me, barring search engines, guest blogging has generated a lot of high quality, converting traffic. If you know your way around it, and have a business model that supports social media marketing, social media can be a great source of 'converting' traffic. Content is the backbone of both guest blogging as well as social media.

If you have great content that you want to publish on someone else's blog (that has a following, of course), for example, you're going to reap the rewards.

I agree entirely with Paul ("myob") above. Article syndication can be a very powerful way of attracting highly targeted traffic, even without any "SEO" being involved at all. I would think it's probably by far the best free method, overall, of generating good traffic.

Blog it up and go to yahoo answers and answer any questions that you think you can answer. It'll help your credibility and people can see how many people you have helped which will make you look more and more professional everyday. Make videos then twitter and facebook them. I make almost 200 dollars each from my 7 affiliate links this way... The more the merrier when it comes to free advertising.

My two main traffic sources come from the search engines and social networking sites.

Building your networks up on the social media and web 2.0 sites, will be far more beneficial (long term) than working on seo for the search engines. IMHO
