Please help with Wordpress.

Hi,

This a dumb question:
I have installed a new theme with filezilla but what did I do wrong? It's listed there in my admin panel with:
"broken theme" "The following themes are installed but incomplete. Themes must have a stylesheet and a template"
How do I actually get the template there lol?
Thanks

It seems not all files have been uploaded.

First thing is to simply upload everything again to the same location. If it's still not working check if there's a file style.css in your local copy of the theme, and if this is uploaded as well.

Make sure you have the actual template folder in the WP content theme folder. It should be right next to the the WP default theme (typically called "twentyten").

The path would be something like public_html ---> wp_content ---> themes ---> yourtemplatefoldername

    Hope this helps.

Yep, this has happened to me a couple times in the last week, as I just started with wordpress blogs.

Not being very technically inclined, I just deleted and re-installed the themes, which seems to work.

If you have the original theme zip file you can also upload the theme zip via the appearance > install themes > upload, far easier..

Yep, you should play around with the Wordpress dashboard, it's fairly easy to use and there are a lot of things you may not have imagined that are quite useful.

Yes, MikeTucker, Wordpress is a wonderful thing and I shall play with it more
For some reason I always hear about uploading themes and plugins with ftp. Why? Other way is so much quicker. Thanks for your help.

Why? Probably because more experienced marketers have to use ftp for a lot of other purposes and the "skill" gets taken for granted ... it is easy to forget how hard it was when you started when you've been at this for a while.

        Good luck!

Well for me it's about convenience and time. If I am only adding one theme or plugin I use the upload feature in the Wordpress dashboard. If I am doing a new install I have a few themes and plugins all ready to go and can just FTP all of them at once. I like to keep a file called wordpress with subfolders that mirror the installation. So a separate theme and plugin folder, it just makes it easier to upload or find when uploading through the dashboard. I keep 2 sets 1 with zips only and 1 with just the unzipped folders. It works real well for me. The more times you do it the easier and faster it happens.

          Keep at it

  • Depending on connection speed, I can manually (through FTP) setup a CMS-style WordPress install in less than 5 minutes, including basic pages. I normally use the same hosting a/c & database, which you may not want to do. Having WordPress › Core Tweaks WordPress Setup « WordPress Plugins handy makes it a breeze to do post-install cleanup. (Free plugin, and I've no affiliation to creators)
