Be careful when you are working with Fiverr

Please be careful when you are working with Fiverr.com. There are many hackers over there. Recently I became a victim of them. That's why I want to share my experience so it doesn't happen to you.

Few weeks back I bought a little software about article marketing from Fiverr. It didn't work and I claimed my money back. The gig said that she was extremely sorry for the software and she would give me a very powerful tool later on. We exchanged our Skype ID.

Just two days back she contacted me in Skype and offered me the tool. She just asked me if I was interested to increase the number of my Facebook fan. And then she gave me a link to increase Fans upto 10K. She also showed me some Fan page with 40-50K fans using her method. She gave me a link, I just filled up that form with my Facebook, Yahoo and Gmail information and submitted. I DID THE BIGGEST MISTAKE HERE.

At night I was going to check my emails and I've found my Yahoo, Gmail, Facebook everything is blocked. I just fell from the sky and understood the mistake I have done.

The next day (yesterday) I checked my Internet banking and discovered that my PayPal account has been hacked as well and they took $1500 from my account. I immediately contacted my bank & Paypal and that money issue has been resolved.

It was a very big lesson for me. That's why I want to tell my fellow warriors to be very careful when you are working with Fiverr.

    Tuhin,

First of all, I am very sorry to hear what happened to you. I hope you get it all sorted out with your banks, the police, etc.

You have a great point about being careful and using due diligence, however, it's not necessarily "Fiverr" that's to blame here... But rather the scumbags that steal from people, whether it be on Fiverr, or on the street corner holding you up with a gun!

I know you said "when working with Fiverr" which is the point that I think should be brought to the surface. When working with Fiverr and/or ANY website, service, freelancer, etc...

I would advise anyone that gives their information to anyone on the internet to: Beware and make sure you know and trust who you are dealing with. Do your research and don't hand out your critical data unless you are 100% sure.

    Best,
    Shane

So did you give your password too?

Personally, I never never never ever dream of giving my password to anyone. If that means I cannot import my Yahoo list to my Facebook, so be it. But I shall for example never give my Facebook password to Yahoo and Yahoo password to Facebook and so on.

You get the idea. Forget this "trust" factor. My personal and confidential information at one place is not going to leave me for another place. Period.

Yes, I did this mistake to give my password.

But I would rather take this as a lesson of my life. Forget the "trust" factor about personal & confidential information.

        Thanks

      Hi Shane,
Thanks, you are right. It's not about Fiverr only, it may happen anywhere. It was my mistake that I passed my personal info in a script.

Yes, I sorted everything with Paypal & bank. I didn't go to police yet.

      Thanks

I couldn't agree more with this comment...it's sad but a true fact that wherever there is an opportunity to exploit people for money or otherwise...there will always be people who shirk, societal ethics to do this.

This has a sad knock on effect, in that because of these fraudsters, people are so guarded that they are often blind to genuine advice and help.

We live in a society where the mistrust of others has become the norm and the majority of helpful people around are ignored.

It's a sad state of affairs.

      • Tuhin,

I got a sick feeling in my stomach when I read your story. I am sorry to hear it happened, and I hope you get everything resolved.

This is going to sound silly, but I had never heard of Fiverr until today. I came across a few discussions regarding Fiverr, but I have yet to investigate myself. There isn't much that I would be willing to do for 5$, lol -- how do you use Fiverr? It seems as though a lot of internet marketers are using it in very creative ways.

        Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks for raising this issue. Yes, I would say there are many hackers over there. (May be small level or big level). I am not 100% sure but it's my guess after the incident.

You can find many gigs are offering to increase Facebook fans upto 500, 600 or 1000 within 2-4 days. There is one condition, you have to make him/her as an admin. I don't know any method how to increase 1000 fans in 4 days unless I have a big exposure. For sure they are using some blackhat technology and you never know what they are doing with your account as an admin.

The gig who offered me the service was from USA. My Facebook account has been manipulated from India. (Facebook showed me the location of last login) It's very much possible that they have a big network.

Mate, they are very smart. They know all the tricks of copywriting and marketing. That gig made me a good offer, the conversation was normal, she showed me proof, started a scarcity of time bound.. She did everything.

I was just thinking that she might do very well in Internet marketing if she followed the white hat method.

Yeah most don't follow the "white hat method" because they find if better to steal from someone that has already put some work into it and they can make a quick buck and start over. But once they actually get tired of stealing and decide it's better they try it maybe then they will make it online the right way.

    1. Never give your login information to anyone. I don't care if they say it's necessary or their business is trusted. NEVER give them any kind of login information.

    2. Triple check the URL in your browser before entering any login information. If you know you are already logged into facebook and you come to a page asking you to login again, check the URL. Someone might be trying to phish your login info.

Well I've personally been with fiverr as a seller for nearly six months and I haven't encountered many problems, apart from buyers getting their accounts blocked and the occasional sarcastic comment. I think it's a good place to promote your services and also to find services that will help your own marketing campaign.

      Mark

Mate, you understood my pain. In fact I haven't got my Gmail account back.

I also want to punish them. I went to Police. They said that they wouldn't do anything for $1500 only. I replied that I check my online banking and other staff almost regularly. But there are thousands of people, they just look at the monthly statement. They didn't bother. They just told me, if I want I would write an incident report

This is really a bad experience of yours. When giving personal information online is a bad idea. You have to know your limitations in terms of giving information online.

Very sorry to hear the trouble you had. I am active on fiverr as a seller. So I have not had any experience actually purchasing gigs. I am enjoying using fiverr to make a little extra money, not becoming a millionaire, but my daughters graduation party is coming up and I am happy to say I have made enough to help with the tent and food. The wife is happy

That's great. Actually it's my mistake that I gave my details to somebody else. at the same time it was a good lesson for me.

      Have a great graduation party

Ok never use the same password for all your accounts. Don't use your paypal email as your personal one, and don't give it out to anyone. Ever. Its good u learned that lesson at $1500 and not $15,000 (and dont get it back). If you where gulliable to do that, then that was a lesson u needed, u didnt exactly get "scammed" as much as you got taught.

    Wisdom has come to you

Always double check the website where it asks you to enter both username and password for whatever accounts, even just for email accounts. Don't enter anything unless you know the website well.

no matter what gig you are looking at on fiverr, make sure to click on the tab that says "rating". this will pull up the top rated sellers on fiverr. someone doesn't get these by accident, it's based on buyers' experience with the seller. they also have a "top-rated seller" badge that they get when they've collected enough thumbs up reviews from satisfied buyers. just a little tip...

Scammers and thieves are everywhere on the internet, not exclusively on Fiverr. I don't think it's fair to say "be careful when working with Fiverr" rather than simply "be careful when working with anyone."

NEVER give out your password. That's the number one rule on the internet. Your very lucky you didn't have your entire life crumble. This is a good reminder to everyone... If you need my password for anything, we will never do business.

The same caution can be said for "rent a coder" type sites like eLance. I had a developer outsource some of his work without my knowledge and he gave FTP credentials to a freelancer. Months later, the site was hacked using that FTP data.

I burned up a day of my life unwinding the hack, smoothing things over with the client, and forensically unraveling the story through log files, while my hired developer denied any knowledge of how it could have happened.

Wondering did you reveal your password as well when you keyed in personal information, or she managed to hack all your accounts by just knowing your email address and usernames?

Either way, you still managed to resolve your money issue and that is very lucky of you!
